Just because she's won 15 matches in a row? And the Australian Open and the World Championships? Of course not!!!!* She's just gotten a few lucky breaks.

Yes, I think Mauresmo is the best player on tour right now. She consistently has great results, and she is healthy for 90% of the year (more than most players in the Top 20). Also, she is the only player who seems to give it her all at every tournament she enters, whether it's a Grand Slam or not.

I don't know. Obviously she's won what 15 matches in a row, but she didn't have to beat anywhere that really troubles her besides Kim (and Justine, we all know that story). If she plays Lindsay, Justine or Sharapova in Dubai, I don't see her winning.

Yeah I know but...I think Sharapova would kill her on a hardcourt and if Justine is playing well, she beats Mauresmo. Amelie has figured out how to trouble Justine, but like I said, if she's playing well, Justine beats her. Same goes for Lindsay; Amelie can only beat her if Lindsay is playing poorly. all in my humble opinion of course ;)

She has a 2-0 record against Sharapova ......so i certainly know for who i'd bet in a match beetween them, especially considering their current respective forms

the 2 players who really have her numbers are Lindsay and Serena.......but i'm not really sure those 2 would beat her at the moment, especially Serena

Amelie is definitely the best play on tour at the moment, the results prove that! Yes, she was basically handed the Australian Open title due to players retiring but her performances at both Paris and Antwerp were fantastic. Today she beat Kim Clijsters (who seemed very close to fuly fit), perhaps her biggest rival... I guess we will find out even more in Dubai with Justine being in the same half of the draw as her and with a potential final against either Lindsay, Martina or Maria. I can't see any of those players beating her at the moment but... we'll see :)

I'llreserve judgment until after Dubai, but i bet I will be saying she is, don't see Sharapova or Davenport beating her if she plays well

azinna
Feb 19th, 2006, 10:14 PM
Definitely. In the current game part of the makeup of a Top Player is being able to stay healthy (just as it's been on the ATP for a while). Can't use the depleted-field excuse. And we're not talking about a mere streak here. Amelie has been winning the important matches since the fall season.

Feb 19th, 2006, 10:18 PM
I have seen Justine, Mary Elena, Martina and Kim play better sets since the start of the YEC and the odd match but you don't get prizes for playing well at times and not keeping it up when it matters. Momo has kept it up when the rest of them havn't managed it.........

switz
Feb 19th, 2006, 10:25 PM
Logic would suggest when you've won 5 of your last 6 tournaments including a slam and the YEC that you're one of the better players on tour ;)

Philly & the YEC kinda told us she woould be back, after the two horrible losses. i mean, she's on a roll right now, 15 matches won on a row, 3 titles already for 2006. She's definitely havin the best beggining of the season. I would like to see how she does against Lindsay/Justine.

put a in-form Serena instead of Justine ;)

Justine has never really been a nemesis for Amelie(they are 4-4 in their head to head)......Lindsay and Serena, yes(i could have added Venus too but it seems that Amelie has turned the corner a bit against her in the last 2 years )......so that's why i would find it very interesting to see how the current Amelie would perform against those 2,especially if they are at their best.

I will stand by my words, although I have overestimated Amélie's performance... She's now 16-2 (88,9%). Justine is currently 11-1 (91,7%) and willl be 12-1 (92,3%) if she wins one of the next 2 sets against Franny... So who's the best player "right now"?

Numbers are funny things you know... I still prefer the 3 tittles back to back (interesting detail: one of them a GS, though not " numerical" info), 17 matches streak, more than 1 million dollars in prize money... STILL looks like the best player's achievements in 2006 to me. But I understand we all need some comfort and numbers always provide some comforting perspective depending on what you looking for. ;)

And Amélie is now 18-2, not 16-2. At least get the right %, I'm too lazy to calculate it :p
