I was watching the Olympics last night and there was a young Chinese Speed Skater who moved to the US as a little girl that is now doing pretty well at speed skating, but he said that her story was similar to TENNIS GREAT Maria S. I almost fell out of my chair, she’s a TENNIS GREAT know. I guess Iva M, Myskina, Momo, and Kunesove (sp) is also, he just lowered the quieter for what it takes to be a Tennis Great. I guess anyone who wins one slam will be called a Tennis Great from now on.

I think winning a grand slam is pretty great.

i heard that too, and just assumed he was being overly dramatic to make it sound interesting, they'll say pretty much anything too keep the few viewers they have. :o
she's a great player, but perhaps only a tennis great to those that know nothing about tennis, or have only watched it a bit for the past 2 years.

I heard that too, and I was like 'what'? Then I remembered you become a tennis great when you beat a :tape:

Oh please of course it is, but to call the girl a Tennis Great oh no. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was coming down from his crack high when he said it, but stop the hype of Maria. she is far from being a Tennis Great. She has yet to prove that she is deserving of the title Grandslam Champion.

Well she won a grand slam hence she deserves the title.

Seems fairly straightforward to me.

You may be expecting a little too much from TV commentators. the title "great" is a little premature for Maria at this stage, but he was just waxing poetic and not really going for accuracy, which sports journalists don't strive for too often, anyway.

Well his credibility is shot then as a tennis journalist.

Please note that as I pointed out in an earlier thread, she also describes herself as a great player. A little prematurely I believe.

Maria WON Wimbledon, making her a Grandslam Champion; much as some of you hate to admit. She doesn't have to "prove" anything.

Just another Maria-bashing thread, by some of the many usual suspects. They just can't stay away from Masha.

But Maria is NOT a tennis great, that's an absolute insult to the term. It loses all prestigue. This tennis great has no big titles, hasn't beaten a top player this year, and hasn't made a final since Birmingham. It was a great accomplishment to win wimbledon (however debatable the circumstances), and well the YEC was lucky - no denying that however obsessed you are.

She is no great, and you can't call it bashing when someone points out their OUTRAGE at that point. Democracy :bounce: It's a ridiculous example of bias, and such a person in his occupation does lose credibility.

Whether Maria is a tennis great or not, I think the real question is why anyone would actually take Ted Robinson seriously.

True, but she is far from a tennis great. Should she never win another Grand Slam, I say it is debatable that she is even worthy for spot in the Tennis Hall of Fam.

She's won a Wimbledon, a YEC and is a former #1. That doesn't necessarily make her "the best" player in the world, let alone an all-time great, but it certainly makes her one of the great players of recent years. And she has plenty of time to add to her already impressive achievements.

Oh please. I guess you could Iva M one of the greatest of all time as well. I just wish you Maria fans would stop with your exaggeration of her so called Greatness.

:) I'm not a Sharapova fan (although I understand the confusion since it's not the habit here to say something positive about anyone except your own faves) and I certainly didn't call her an all-time great.

Maria Sharapova is the best tennis player EVER. Absolutely nobody can come close. Hasn't this been discussed already.
