Some tough competition here for Maria. Virtually all the players who've given her trouble in the past are here except Kim and Momo. I'd prefer Maria to have gone for an easier field to build her confidence this year. This will be hard work.

I second Jacobruiz.

Same here. Last time they met, it was Maria's first match against Hingis - and was a step into the unknown. This time Maria and her team will hopefully have worked out a better strategy, and add that to Maria's determination - we should have a much better match this time around!

Yea bring on Hingis again if they both get to the QF. How does Momo draw the 2 Qualies?? Tough draw when it gets deep as expected. Give it your best Masha :yeah:

Maria needs to pay Hingis so she can get use to her... I would prefer it to be now rather then on clay (where Maria is a little weaker) or on grass (where I hate Masha loosing)! Its now or never to step up and beat her! (well not really but u get what I mean)

Maria will play Dushevina in her second round match, they never played on the WTA before but did on the ITF tour, Maria won once and Dushevina won twice including a 1-6 1-6 victory!

but those times are long gone, they will probably play on Wednesday

Cmon Maria!!! :bounce: tough draw but then i think almost everyone in her half has a tough draw. she'll have a big match whether she gets martina or nastya. I'd prefer nastya kicks martina's ass but then a sharapova-hingis rematch would allow maria to compete for some revenge and i do think she'll do better against hingis this time. the surprise factor isn't there anymore. anyway, first things first, gotta get through dushevina. :D

:topic: Myskina vs. Hingis is a must watch, too. Some in the Myskina camp think Hingis paid their player a backhanded compliment when she (Hingis) said one of the things that urged her to come back was watching a player like Myskina win a Grand Slam. I don't know what the actual quote was, but it came across like : if an [average] player like Myskina can win the French Open, maybe I have a chance.

msharafan
Feb 22nd, 2006, 06:09 PM
yeah great start maria!
now its time for the hard work to begin.
masha seemed quite confident on getting revenge on martina after japan.
compared to japans performance maria played 10 times better today, her serve was better even compared to a quick service, she served a few aces and her groundies were on fire, but martina is a much differnt opponent to dushevina, she will try to put maria off her shots which she does well.
but one thing maria has going for her is she doesnt have as much pressure as before, well i think so anyway what about you guys, and are you confident masha can get revenge on martina tommorow?

Steve-o
Feb 22nd, 2006, 07:28 PM
Impressive scoreline!

I'm sure Maria will put in a better performance against Martina, she will know what to expect this time. I think it's a pretty important match for Maria, another heavy defeat to Hingis could be damaging but on the flipside a win would be a huge confidence booster.

I've got a good feeling about this one :) *fingers crossed*

Maria Croft
Feb 22nd, 2006, 09:06 PM
I think she could take Hingis, but it depends on how both players play, if Hingis plays like she did in Tokyo it's going to be very tough, if she plays like some of her other matches (Mirza and Dementieva) Maria should be able to get this one, I hope she is ready to get revenge and go for it, I also hope that she doesn't put any pressure on herself and just goes out there and plays her own tennis

At any rate, I hope she does better then in Tokyo lol

Good luck Maria!

Andy.
Feb 22nd, 2006, 10:21 PM
Wow what an awesome way to start the tournament. But thats it easy time is over and now she will have to be in top gear. Im sure she will be hugely motivated now to get a win and its all about her not allowing Hingis to play by hitting her off the court and rattleing her. Good luck Maria

I disagree here Sum
Martina was great against Elena
really great, she was doing everything (even the commentator notice that)
the only problem was Elena that was too good in that day

no player would have beat her that day, no one

of course i want maria to win, and i would be confident but theres no point in us fans being confident that maria can win, only maria knows that at the mo, because i was confident at japan and she lost. thats not to say i dont think she can win, cause i think she has a great chance now. the difference is maria is serving far better than in tokyo, and martinas serve may be vunreble on the slower court, but im not sure about this. also does everyone agree that the pressure is on martina this time? cause martina i presume expected herself to beat mirza and because of this while serving for the match she went down 0-30 because she was tight, im sure now martina expects herself to win this one, which could and hopfully leads to tightness, cause i have to admit maria was tight in japan i think. one thing i will say though is i had a dream that maria lost a match last night she was serving to stay in it after a weak start but was playing better in the second she completely lost it and fell to the ground, got back up and lost the next 4 points and the match, but one thing i will say is i had a dream at the us open that maria would beat kim and she didnt(not without trying), so maybe now ive dreamt maria will lose shell win(hopfully). Anyway i wont be home till around 4:05 this afternoon and the match starts at 3:00 for me, so i presume when i come in ill have a good idea who will win and that hopfully will be maria!
so good luck masha!

msharafan
Feb 23rd, 2006, 08:15 PM
yeah if masha manages to beat martina it will be a tough match no matter what the score, it will be a lot tougher again to beat lindsey/kirilenko again on the same day.
all of these factors of possibly having to play 2 matches, may effect marias chances or then again it may help her. hingis may think to herself be aggressive keep getting the ball back just like in tokyo and il win for sure, she might rush and lose the opening set and the match, then again hingis may not have a lapse in the 2nd set as to not give maria any chance, then again martina may be thinking about the potential lindsey match and let maria back in. there are so many ways this could effect both players. either way if lindsey beats kirilenko in 2 sets and maria/hingis beats either in 3 sets i cant see maria/hingis winning as they will be too tired. then again lindsey has been known to rush matches which may lead to a loss, either way itll be a tough day out there for maria both physically and mentally.
but good luck maria!!!
were all rooting for you!!!

YEAH, great win for Masha! She got her revenge and she got it in straight sets.., 6-3 6-4 is a nice scoreline! A downside of this win though is this stat: Points won on 2nd serve 3/25 (12%)! Whatever happened to her amazing 2nd serve!

Maria Croft
Feb 24th, 2006, 10:09 AM
yeah so great! I'm jumping with joy lol

The best thing about her second serve stat is that in the second set in one game she was down 15-30 and won two out of those three points on second serve to get to 40-30, she won that game, so you see how those little things can still be so damn important!

Congrats Maria!

It's our day you guys!!!!!!!!!  I am just so damn happy! and I know Maria is as well. You should have seen her. She was really fighting so passionately out there. It didn't seem like a QF! You would have been so proud of her.

And I wouldn't be too worried about the second serves yet. She was consciously going for strong second serves so as not to give Martina any chance to punish them. She was just taking huge risks in my opinion. The first serve though is a different story. But we all know how unreliable it has been lately. I hope she gets more aces in or at least a higher first serve percentage in the semis.

Anyway, once the ball was in play, Maria just went for her shots. Her angles were :worship: and she was putting away balls with so much power and conviction. Just great to see! I just hope she won't feel exhausted by semis time. I know she will be though after all that screaming and passionate play. The only good thing is that Lindsay would more likely be spent as well and for Kirilenko to have taken her to 3 sets, is probably not playing that great. Well, we can hope. Anyway, at this point, the Martina win is all that matters to me. It was like she already won a final. Martina is the type of player that gives Maria troubles and the fact that she was able to conquer and outplay Martina so convincingly is a tremendous feat. :D

All this said, I still am looking forward to the semis and may Maria fight it out as hard as she did in the QF! ;) She'll have to hold her service games more though.

Sharapova gets her revenge against Hingis

Maria Sharapova got her revenge against former world number one Martina Hingis beating her 6-3 6-4 in a match with plenty of twist, turns, ebbs and flows.

The top ranked Russian who had lost to Hingis a few weeks earlier at the semifinal stage of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo in straight sets, was desperate to even the score today in Dubai, and it showed. Her every winner was accompanied by double fist pumps and shreiks in Hingis' direction as she willed herself to victory. She got off to a good start breaking the Swiss serve in the third game, putting away a poorly executed drop shot from her opponent. However, Hingis broke staright back in the next game on her third break point as an exhausted Sharapova went wide on her forehand. Hingis was beginning to dictate play, taking the ball on the rise to move Sharapova to all angles of the court, and showing off her excellent defensive skills from the baseline. Sharapova broke again in the seventh game and did not look back as she turned up the heat on her groundstrokes, going for winners off her returns and forcing Hingis into error. She took the first set 6-3 with a second consecutive break of the Hingis serve as the Swiss netted her backhand off an aggressive Sharapova return.

The second set started off well for Hingis as she broke the Russian immediately, but again lost her serve in the next game. Although Hingis broke again to go 3-2 ahead, she lost her serve in the next game as Sharapova desperate to get to the winning line shreiked "come on!" and gave a double fist pump towards Hingis. Her high octane grunting had reached a crescendo by this point as she went after every point as if her life depended on it, pounding the ball relentlessly to force a Hingis submission. Another break of the Swiss delivery left Sharapova serving for the match at 5-3, but to the delight of the partisan crowd who were chanting for the young Swiss former champion, Hingis broke back to a loud squeal of displeasure from her opponent. In the next game on the Hingis serve, Sharapova to her immense relief took the match on her third match point as Hingis went long and wide on her running forehand crosscourt stroke. Up went the Russian arms in delight as if she had won the title. The girls shook hands and exchaged friendly words at the net, Sharapova's joy was complete as was her revenge.

Hingis when asked about Sharapova's statement that she did not like to lose to the same player twice exclaimed smiling, "neither do I!" She went on; "I didn't play as well as last time, today I was not as concentrated as last time. The crowd were carrying me. I lacked patience, and came up short." Asked about the Sharapova squeals she said, "It was quite funny at the end. It seemed like the shorter the ball, the louder she became."

Sharapova will play later today defending champion Lindsay Davenport who squeezed past promising Russian teenager Maria Kirilenko 4-6 6-2 6-3.

after what justine did to mauresmo and all the bad rap marias been getting lately even as outsiders you have to say maria deserves to win, how many times has maria and her fans been dissapointed lately? not marias fault of couse, but the last time maria won a title birmingham i was in france and that seems a million years ago, so all we want is for masha to do her best and hope God is shining down on her and us again and that she wins, but if not we all still should be extremely proud of maria, theyre wont be many days were maria gets to beat 2 champions in so we should make the most of them.
so good luck masha!!!
and please God let maria win.

Sharapova ousts Davenport in battle-royal
http://inside-tennis.net/index2.php?action=news&id=1317

Defending champion Lindsay Davenport bowed out of the Dubai Duty Free Women's Open tonight to an inspired Maria Sharapova who came from behind to post a 3-6 6-1 6-3 win. The Russian who led their head to head 3-1 made a slow start as she struggled to match the pace of the Davenport groundstrokes and fell behind 0-4 before mounting any kind of challenge. Davenport took the opening set 6-3, but then in a total reversal in the next set found herself 0-4 down and could only win a single game as Sharapova found her rhythm and her range and took control of the baseline exchanges. The final set saw both women playing at a high level, but it was the American who got the first break in the third game as she forced an error from Sharapova on the third break point. Back came the top ranked Russian in the next game, full of resolve, breaking the Davenport serve to 15 with a rasping forehand crosscourt winner on the the run. She signified the significance of that break with a trademark fist-pump, and from there stepped up her game breaking Davenport again in the eigth game with a backhand winner down the line. She served out the match succesfully, marching into the final on her first match point as Davenport's backhand went long.

After the match Sharapova admitted having problems adjusting to playing two different types of players in a single day; "Took a while to get used to Lindsay's pace, she was hitting winners left and right. Took me a while to adjust." Looking ahead to the final against Justine Henin-Hardenne she said confidently; "I don't have any problems playing her. We're both going to be physically tired. She is very fit, but we will both be ready."

Davenport reflected on the match of three tales; "Played really well in the first, big lapse in the second, and played well again in the third. She came up with some great shots in the third set. I don't want to make excuses but it's been a very long tough day for everyone."

sounds like maria went up a level when she needed to, well done maria.
and for lindsey it is a shame cause next to maria she is my fav player with kim as i respect them both emenscly. but maria needs to adjust quickly tommorow if she wants to beat maria i suppose maria has played plent of different type of players hingis who mixes up the pace and dav who hammers the ball, so maria will need to get the balance right cause if not justine will get the confidence and start spraying winners. anyway good luck masha!!!
and well done!!!

Sorry. 7-5 6-2 loss. Maria was one of seven on break point opportunities. Jhh won 21 of 31 of the points on her second serve. 68%. Maria will eventually win a lot this year. I wonder if fatigue was a factor.

Yeah, Justine was better today (again, sadly), but this was still a great tournament for Maria.
Now get some rest Masha and bring this good form with you to Indian Wells, and ofcourse further. :) I think this gives a lot of confidence for the rest of the season, despite the loss today.
Go Masha!

So much to say :o Tough loss, great effort from Maria though. The first 8 games was the best I've ever seen Maria play, so aggressive with few errors. Just a pity Maria couldn't take out the first set at 5-3, it might of been a different match if she had.

Not sure what upset Maria after the first set, that bad line call, the crowd or just simply the frustration of not taking the set

Anyway, Maria played great and with some variety too, slice BH, dropshots and even a couple of amazing BH volleys :clap2:

Great springboard for the rest of the season :)

I'm watching the match on TTC now to see what happened. Masha seems very nervy and tentative. I wonder why she didnt use heavy topspin to get balls back and give her time to get in a better position like she did in Melbourne.

I think Maria was just too tired in the second set and that was the reason she was close to tears because even though she fought till the very end she knew she didn't have enough to turn this match around

But she is improving so much against players like Henin-Hardenne, I think it's only a matter of time before she will take these matches, but right now it looks like players like Henin-Hardenne and Clijsters still have something more, but no wonder, they have been on the tour for such a long time already

Awwww, after such a great day the day before!!! I saw the score on teletext and was pissed off (I don't like Justine anyway) but then I read the little report thing and it spoke about the match being high quality and that Maria mixed her game up well! That made me feel slightly better and proud that she is trying new things when it comes to playing players like Justine, mixing it up is needed if you want to beat her!

I am pasting what I posted on the cheering thread. I dunno how many ppl go there. haha....

:wavey: guys!!! I just finished watching the Maria-Lindsay semi again  ...I just felt I had to watch it to distract from the disappointment of Maria losing the final. Pathetic I know but she seriously wasted good opportunities in that match. I was close to certain she would take the first set when serving for it at 5-3 but and then after that first set, I just was so disappointed in her attitude. She was near tears out there and she kept on that face for almost the entire second set. It's something I've noticed about her lately. She is now more vulnerable to getting down on herself when she is fighting from behind and more so if she lost a tight set she had a chance of winning and/or had gotten a few bad line calls. That's why I was proud of her during that Lindsay match as she was able to battle her way up from a set down and to have done it with such great play was amazing. But Lindsay is someone she's beaten a few times before and is a top player she is more comfortable playing against. More importantly, in her head I think she is convinced she can beat Lindsay. It is just a different mentality IMO when it comes to Justine. She is aware that she has troubles playing Justine and she knew winning that first set after she had been playing so well was her best chance at getting the title. When she lost it, her morale went down quickly. It wasn't nice to see especially from a fan's perspective. I just hope she gathers more confidence and self-belief when she is up against Justine or Kim. I know she can do it. It's just a matter of focus and determination. If she keeps these things up, I actually think she will win in her next match-up with either of the two. They may be better players as of the moment, but for Maria, they aren't entirely unbeatable. I really smell revenge coming. ;)

With all these things said, however, I am still proud of her and what she has managed to accomplish in this tournament. She was able to achieve the two things that I would say were on top of her priority list: 1) Get her revenge against Martina Hingis and 2) Go past the semifinal stage. I didn't think getting to the finals in Dubai was 100% realistic considering the draw but I knew in my heart that she had what it took to get past Hingis and that if she did, Davenport wouldn't relatively be that much of a task. Thus, overall, she had a great run and hopefully her confidence has soared and that this experience has made her even more hungry to go and win more titles. To have beaten Hingis and Davenport in one day is nothing to sneer at. It proves she is a top player to really contend with and who is well-deserving of being in the top 5 (well, that's if there were any doubts to begin with). And I agree with others here who have mentioned that she has shown improvements in her game in this tournament. It was great to have seen her try new things, slowly add a little more variety to her game, and be somehow successful at them. If anything, these show she is committed to working hard to become an even better player and I can only hope that 2006 will turn out to be a year in which Maria does become a bigger force in women's tennis as well as one in which she'll put to shame those who have pathetically tried to criticize her and put her down.

Teemu
Feb 26th, 2006, 12:15 PM
I've never been disappointed in her attitude. :) I think she always keeps fighting, even though sometimes she looks so frustrated that it hurts. I also think it's impossible to ask her to come back every time as a winner, when the opponent too is one of the best players in the world. About Maria getting down on herself, I agree somewhat, but I think that it only happens when she's physically drained out and knows she just can't win this one. She doesn't lose because of it, she's just feeling down because she knows that things aren't going her way.

I don't believe that Maria has any confidence problems with any player. The matches against Justine and Kim have been very close, and of high quality. Maria is just learning to play these girls who have much more variety in their game than lets say, Davenport. If anything, I think she needs more patience in some matches. She's said it herself that when facing players like Kim or Justine, she needs to be ready to hit that one extra ball and build up her attacks well. She didn't quite do that in the final, atleast not in the second set. But as she said, she was physically tired. I was also happy to hear that she was pleased with her week overall, as she should be. :bounce:

Best of Luck for your next tourney, Maria! Really looking forward to it.

A good tournament for Maria despite the disappointment of the final. The only downer is that Masha should not let 5-3 leads slip! :fiery:

I posted on page 1 iof this thread that this was a tough tournament to enter for maria, particularly at this stage of her year. And she has done a LOT better than I feared she might. She has proved yet again what a great player she is, even with elements of her game that need improvement.

So great performance Maria.

Without seeing the final, I heard Maria played well still...and was using all of the court which is good. I dont think we can say shes trying new things because Maria always attemped to move forward at times, maybe shes more inclined to when feeling fatigued but putting together a few good points at the net will build her confidence.

maria impressed me a lot in her last 2 matches against Justine.
those 2 have very exciting matchups, I must say. I understand you guys want Maria to beat Justine, but believe me, she will, as King pointed out, she definetly has the tools to do so.

What i especially loved about the last 2 matches (ie australia SF and this final) is that Maria really tried everything and tried different tactics. I'm happy (as a Justine fan) that Justine played a smart match, because otherwise she wouldn't have won.
No matter what some (jealous?) people might say, Maria is THE real deal, and I thik everyone knows it. And about some poeple saying "she should not try to become a volleyer" and stuff... euhm, imo, that's just stupid!! she should! she should continue to wrok and 'create a game' like she is doing now. She's playing better now than 2 years ago, that's for sure.
When Justine retooled her serve people said it was a bad idea, and while that serve is still horrible at times ;); I'm still glad Justine did continue to retool her game. Same goes for Maria. Things will start to fall into place and she will win many more Gs's. I am absolutely 100% sure of that.

ps: ok, so this really seems like sucking up :p but Maria fans must be my favourite fellow fans ;) (no I don't need good rep :p :p ). I was just surprised howimpressed i was with maria that I needed to write it down. in the past I sometimes thought that 'she only serves and hits hard' but she prooved me wrong big time!!

Hope she got some experiments and win a hardcourt title. Clay season is gonna come and I'm not sure she can do the best.( It's not very fair, clay season is long but grass season is so :o )
But she's improving, that's for sure.
