Makes you wonder if it's the tournament or the player???

Well, at least we will get to see her on Martha Stewart Living next week.

It has been officialy announced that Serena is not going to play in Antwerp, the reason for not comming is that she is not feeling that she is in shape, those are the words of Serena.
Next tournament in schedule of Serena will be Dubai, but I think she'll pull out of that tournament too. I think she'll stay in America and that we'll see her back in Miami

Regardless of what shape Serena is in, she WILL play Dubai. The sheikhs are giving her too much money under the table for her not to show up.

Somehow I doubt she's hurting for cash. If she doesn't feel she's ready, or doesn't want to bother, she won't.

She took so much shit for being unfit and unprepared for Oz, I don't think we'll see her until she feels she's ready.

Of course Serena's not hurting for cash, Griff, but who wouldn't want to make a quick six figures? As far as being unfit and unprepared to play, I don't see how NOT playing can solve that problem. Could you please explain that to me?

what serena needs is match play. so she needs to buck it up.

You can do a lot for your fitness and movement (both liabilities for her in Melboure) without playing matches. I'm hardly an authority, but you could also ask Kim, Hingis and/or Lindsay, all of whom came off long lay-offs physically fit and well-practiced, if not exactly "match tough."

Look, it's not like I WANT her to withdraw from Dubai or anywhere else - I'd prefer to see her playing. I just don't see her showing up until she feels she's ready.

The time to do all the serious off-court conditioning was during the off-season. Now that the season has started, I think the best thing for Serena to do is to literally play her way into shape. That way, she won't have any court rust when she finally gets right physically.

Yeah, but she can't play her way into shape if she keeps losing early, and frankly she's never played a schedule heavy enough to keep her "in shape" by match-play alone.

I don't know why she didn't train enough off-season, although I suspect injury played a part. But she didn't. Better late than never, imo.

If Serena didn't feel up to playing singles in Antwerp, she and Venus could have asked for a doubles wild card; there's not a tournament director alive who would turn that request down. As far as her always having a light schedule, I've always been critical of that. I certainly don't want the sisters to overdo it like Henin-Hardenne and Kuznetsova, but I really do believe that they would be less injury-prone if they played more, because their bodies would be more used to the stress.

In general that's true, but once you start with the injuries it becomes a catch-22.

And if part of the problem is her knee, no, she doesn't want to mess around with trying to play that into shape: particularly if part of the "out of shape" is extra body weight without the leg strenth to support and protect the joint.
