Someone made a post about patty not beating top 10 players other than Maria S. We can add this one.

I missed this match *sigh* but absolutely well done patty. You must have played well, and the court must have taken your spins well.

Hard luck Elena - i don't think this will dent her confidence at all. Good luck in Dubai.

Lena and Patty are pretty evenly matched, so I'll blame the jet lag for the scoreline.

Still, a title and a good run in France--good signs for the rest of '06. And the Golden Goddess is still alive in doubles!

Wonderful match from Schnyder. Superb mobility and footwork, the usual imagination and even more shot variety than the usual. Contrary to what some of her fans claim, Schnyder isn't at her best when moonballing opponents from well behind the baseline - she makes the difference when she "calls" her opponents to the net, and then uses her mobility and touch to excellent effect. I wish she would do that even more often - there's few players I enjoy more watching than Schnyder when she tries all those different tactics. And she was very consistent, too - precious few UEs.

With a Schnyder this consistent, Lena would have had to be near her best to beat her - and she wasn't. Her groundstrokes were inconsistent, she was hopelessly outclassed at the net, and most of the time it was Schnyder pressuring her rather than the other way around. Good to see that Lena can keep her DFs under control for most of the matches now, though.

The Portuguese commentary on Eurosport was laughably biased. Since Schnyder was playing, they summoned Miguel Horta, the father of that great prodigy of Portuguese tennis, Frederica Piedade, who at almost 24 y.o. is yet to crack the top 150. Since Piedade is a lefty, her dad's favourite player is Schnyder. And there's nothing wrong with that - as long as the commentary doesn't end up like this (and I'm not exaggerating one bit):

Schnyder winner - Well done Patty. Superbly played!
Schnyder UE - AHHHHH! That was *almost* in!
Lena winner - She got lucky.
Lena UE - That shot was simply dreadful. Technically awkward, and absolutely thoughtless.

Well done Patty, bad luck Lena, the last time I watched Patty was at the AO against Momo, and she looked like a half squashed possum looking at a fast approaching Toyota Hilux with it's headlights on full beam, and I was dissapointed in her showing in that match, but good to see she still has a spring in her step(and hair) not easy to beat the Dement.

wow, Patty must have played well. :)

now in doubles Lena. :)

She did,Head was working and shots were just too good for Elena who spent a lot of time smiling and laughing as they went by her or around her or over her head.

Its about par for 2006. Patty had an off day at the AO, Elena had one too. Last week Elena was on fire. This week its Patty. Its becoming dependant on who plays well each week and no one seems consistent for 3 in a row.

good objective post as usual :yeah:

I was really expecting a loss from Elena in this tournament anyway. I'm happy and quite surprised she got this far. Maybe I'm pessimistic, but I was scared she would go out earlier. Oh well, regroup and good luck next week! Congrats to Patty! ;)

  that must have been annoying yet funny to listen to as a Lena fan...

I didn't find it funny, because they were being very scathing of Lena, sometimes bordering on contemptuous, as if she was completely talentless - forgetting that being outplayed happens to the best.

good objective post as usual :yeah:

Thanks. It's nice to know somebody is reading these "match reports" of mine.

I was really expecting a loss from Elena in this tournament anyway. I'm happy and quite surprised she got this far. Maybe I'm pessimistic, but I was scared she would go out earlier.

This sums up my own expectations and feelings towards this tournament. Reaching the QFs of a tournament with such a stacked draw is undeniably good for any player.

We all hope Lena is on her way to become a more consistent player, no longer alternating the best with the unspeakably shite, but rather the best with the decent or even the good.
