Hard to argue with Maggie Maleeva. Career high of #4, 2 Tier I titles, but underperformance in the slams :sad:. If not for that lone USO QF, she would definitely be the best player without a quarterfinal.

I think Daniela is definately a contender though, without having seen such a list.

Katerina Maleeva - 7 QF (at least one at each major) but never a SF.

Among active players, Dani H leads the way with 3 QF (only RG is missing from her last eight collection).

I would have to say Ai Sugiyama would be tops followed by Dani and Schiavone.

Ai Sugiyama: 8 Fourth Rounds, 2 Quarterfinals
Hantuchova: 2 Fourth Rounds, 2 Quarterfinals
Schiavone: 2 Fourth Rounds, 2 Quarterfinals

magdalena maleeva, daniela hantuchova and katerina maleeva are the 3 obvious players

If the question is "best" in terms of accomplishments then Sugiyama would have to be up for consideration since she's got the better results in the slams. If on the other hand the question is using "best" in terms of potential, then I'd say a handful of the youngsters starting with the ones in my signature.

Following this list I would say Hantuchova, but the next to reach a semi will be Vaidisova I think. But I hope it will be Dani ;)

how do you work that out?

katerina maleeva has reached 7 grandslam quarter-finals

I thought we were talking about active players. If it's open to 'any' player ever that would change things. Is there an active player that has performed better at the slams then Sugiyama? I'm sure there is I just can't think of anyone from the top of my head.

But I would say Maleeva and Hantuchova

Even with one more QF I think Ai's slam record is still better. I think Ai is pretty much a done deal and that Dani still has time to make things happen, but to date Ai is more accomplished than Dani in the slams and on the tour overall. I am saying all this without looking at the records which might not be too wise, but just thinking about it hasn't Ai done more in her career than Dani?

Appologies in advance for being way too lazy to look things up myself....

??

highest rank

daniela = 5
ai = 8

biggest title

daniela = tier 1
ai = tier 2

grandslam quarter-finals

daniela = 3
ai = 2

from these facts, it's clear that daniela has accomplished more on the wta tour in singles, therefore she's the best active player that has not reached a slam semi-final

Thanks. I stand corrected, not sure why I held her in higher regards than Dani. I notice you did leave off one big stat though, TITLES.

Career Titles:

Dani: Indian Wells (One Title)

Ai: Tokyo (2), Gold Coast, Scottsdale, and Linz (Six Titles)

(all the sudden I'm no longer too lazy to look up stats ;) )

I guess a case can be made for each girl, depending on what stats you put more wieght on.

Maggie Maleeva reached 18 4th rounds or so in her career, posting a 1-17 record. Speaking about "who should have reached more quarterfinals?" it comes down to her, but for semis, I don't know... It's close between her, Dani and Katerina. Amanda reached SF's, right? I wouldn't ignore Sandrine Testud, too. But in the end I'll go with Maggie

Off the top of my head I'd say Katerina Maleeva followed by little sis Maggie. Manuela Maleeva only made two semis herself, so I'd say all three Maleevas underperformed on the biggest stages i.e grand slam events.

Funny that on the one hand some think Maggie is the "worst" Tier I-winner, but on the other hand many think she should have reached a SF.

I interpret "best" as "most talented" rather than "most successful":

Daniela Hantuchová (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/hantu/) (3 x qf)
Karina Habšudová (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/habsu/) (1 x qf -- FO'96 (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/habsu/1996.html#FRENCH_OPEN): 8-10 in the third)
Vera Zvonarëva (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/zvona/) (1 x qf -- FO'03 (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/zvona/2003.html#FRENCH_OPEN): 3-6 in the third)
Iroda Tulyaganova (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/tulya/) (4 x 3r)

thank you for your thoughts, but really :tape: :tape: ... if anything Hantuchova is in contention with Carretero as the flukiest Tier I/Master Series winners ever... :rolleyes:
