View Full Version : Should WTA investigate Justine and call for a fine....if not should ITF step in?

I certainlythink since she really insulted Amelie and fans of the sport. Justine had no problem calling for all night aid when she defeated Capriati at USopen2004, why now? I think that was vey insulting and I still can't get over that....just can't and it only goes to show who actually holds the cards in the sport.....the players do.

I think it would be in her best interest to skip a few grand slams, because she is certainly unsportsmanlike and needs a reality check if not from her camp or the tennis governing body, then one from spectators..

I can't believe how upset that made me.....I spoke with some friends who still felt cheated about the whole thing and I agree with them in saying that something needs to be done. There was no problem in asking for a blue or pink pill to continue.

I don't think she should be investigated, I believe she was sick, but I just think had she not been getting WHOOPED so badly and not being OWNED by Momo's strategy she would have kept playing until the end.

i think maybe a fine. because the tickets for finals was expensive.and the crowd didnt get what they wanted.a total match. But still happy mauresmo won

Which is why I think she should be fined because if I could remember correctly, a player was fined in an early round for not trying hard enough by the ATP, I think it was Safin, so how do you explain the abrupt ending to the finals....there are no other rounds and all the work of the other players to make this an event went out.....dirty water and devil midget all together.

I think she should be fined just to ensure she won't ever pull that stunt again or at least think twice about it.

Its an interesting question if you should produce a medical note but it would be difficult to diagnose " i felt like dying " afterwards.

I don't buy the Momo was winning with strategy argument - Momo always tries to play like that - even doing it at her best more than half the top 10 would beat her if fully fit doing it. Justine playing at the level she beat Schiavone two weeks before (similar game) or at her AO SF level would have coped with Momo. She turned up as flat as her chest and played like it.
Thats all possible with NSAIDs and a bad stomach (Paula Radcliffe dropped out of the Olympic Marathon for the same cause) You just have to think though there was a better way of handling it.

I think she'll get her own punishment in due time. I doubt she will ever be as mentally strong as she once was. Imagine: a player everyone thought was mentally frail actually causes a mental powerhouse to retire mid-match. How can Justine ever forget it?

To put it differently Justine plays now with the knowledge that her body can collapse (even in the final and certainly half way through GS - as it did in 2005) and she can't fight her way through everything. She also has to worry about the virus and what brings it back and may now have added a stomach ulcer to the list. Add that to an overworked body, dangerous levels of drive and the experience of losing her mother early (which alone would make you worry about tiredness, ulcers or viruses) and Justine is carrying an enormous suitcase of baggage on court with her.

She's not the only one (Kim has the injury factor driving the retirement factor and Mary, Lindsay and the sisters carry shorter lists of concerns ) but Justine is already looking pretty burdened.

About the topic itself, You are fined only for doing something illegal. If Justine completely faked her illness/injury then okay, but I don't think she did.
The problem I have is that she didn't retire in the SF so my fave was not in the final, that deserves a fine in my silly world  .

I critizized her severely for quitting.
However investigating or fining a player for feeling sick and thus not playing up to par is totally out of line.
a rediculous proposal. totally out of line and unenforceable.

honestly no I won't mind as much, because the player and fan alike is aware of its status, which is Tier III and not grand slam. I am sure when Venus pulled her abdominal strain against Mauresmo, she still tried to compete and retired gracefully, this was tacky and your reasoning doesn't do much for the situation, when tennis fans know the difference between class and no class and that was not even close, because she didn't even acknowledge Amelie in the process and that is where she messed up royally considering it was a big moment for her opponent, she should have acknowledged her by at least saying something to her away from the mic.

hmmmm, Interesting So you can refund your tickets?????

I would really like to know how these tickets work for the future.

I tried to get tickets to the final a couple years ago, but the tickets sold out in half an hour, I got tickets to the semis (second last row) but sat in my hotel watching the final. Only to find out people brought tickets on the day?????

buying tickets to popular tennis events is so so so confusing and unfair!

I just pre-booked well before the tournament - in hope that Maria would be playing - then i just got a refund at the box office the day before.

what makes talking about justine a hater thread. I am not making up what she did. She is the object that seems to appear closer in my rear view window but never close enough to kiss my ass. What, they're gonna start handing out fines to players for getting sick or injured during a match? Or how exactly do you judge how much effort a player is putting in to a match?

And anyway i don't think a fine would teach a player like Justine much of a lesson anyway. The top players earn so much money they probably wouldn't care about paying some silly fine.

Losing a grand slam final is probably punishment enough for Justine. People really need to move on from this :p Its done, just let it go.

I don't see any need for an investigation, or a suspension, or a fine. JH2 didn't break any rules.

What's called for, and won't happen, is what happened to Lleyton Hewitt after accusing a linesman of favoring his opponent, James Blake, because both were dark-skinned. Some of the retired Aussie stars, Laver, Newcombe, Emerson et al, took him aside and told him in no uncertain terms that he was disgracing a legendary tradition with his behavior, and that he needed to change. I don't know that Belgium has any reverred tennis stars who could call Henin-Hardenne onto the carpet. I'm not sure there's anybody she respects above herself.

NOTE: This happens in other sports too. According to Shaq, the reason he finally started acknowledging Kobe again was because Bill Russell spoke to him about it. If you don't know basketball, that's roughly the equivalent of Chris Evert telling you that you have an obligation to the sport to act in a certain way. It's hard to ignore, if you have any respect for the history of your sport.

You are an idiot if you think the two situations are the same. Hewitt said a derogatory comment against a tournament employee and potentially even his fellow competitor. He should've been fined. He would've been seriously reprimanded if it happened in any other workplace.

What Justine did was like you said, in the rules. Hang on, what if she didn't even start the final. What if she said before 5 minutes before the match, "No, I can't play". That would've been ok too. Because at the end of the day, it's her body and she can refuse to do anything she like.

No one should pull her aside to talk to her. Why? What are they going to say? Next time, once you start a final, you finish it. Okay? How ridiculous is that?

This has to be put to rest. What happened happened, deal with it and move on.

A fine or any form of punishment would just stop players from retiring from matches even if they are sick, which could cause a very serious injury or illness. It was her choice to stop, she has to deal with it. Amelie's name is on the trophy and that's all that matters now.

Like...seriously. People are taking this to the extreme. While I do think that Justine should have just tanked the second set, and at least let Amelie WIN it in a normal fashion, I also realize that none of us know what kind of pain Justine was in. For example, just 2 days ago, I had food poisoning, and at times, my stomach was cramping like mad and I was in tremendous pain. If Justine was feeling anything like that, I would have stopped the play myself.

So people, just stop. Justine is not even a favorite of mine, but I don't think she deserves a treatment like this from either the press or "tennis fans."

Won't that take some of the fun out of being a Martian? :p

Look, I don't like what Justine did, but calling for an investiation? To what purpose? Minds won't change on the subject; not the media's, not the fans, not the tennis community's, certainly not Justine's (although I disagree with Volcana here - I think there are players Justine respects and I think IF they felt she screwed up and told her so, it would have an impact on her). The results won't change - Justine will still have retired and Amelie will still be a Grand Slam Champion. There'd be little or no impact on future matches. So basically you'd waste a lot of time and energy so people could enjoy the sound of their own voices. Sound and fury signifying nothing.

There is no need to take things too far, therefore no, she should neither be investigated nor fined.

why not? If Indian Wells can boo you for walkovers in semis then imagine the finals to a grand slam. I see double standard here. After that fiasco in CA with Venus and Serena, they were the worst for the sport and the fans were oh so cheated out of a showdown between the sisters, what happened now?

This is a grand slam, the pennacle of the sport, don't make it to the finals just because and then say something like I didn't feel like I could win. In that case stay your ass home and let those who feel they could win at all costs play, we don't need that kind of attitude in the sport because it defeats everyone's purpose. I think after the retirement in IW, then Venus played through an injury, but there were no more matches to be played and this was it. The finals, do or die ...............call it hating and whatever creative thing you may want, but bad behaviour is bad behaviour. She is a loser and I hope she never makes it pass the second round for the remainder of the year, she doesn't deserve it. Her and Sharapova could take their "I didn't feel like it attitude and go elsewhere but not here. Justine gave the sport a blackeye and needs to acknowledge it and suck up to it, she is not welcomed in these parts of the woods, plus midgets like her would get trampled by the amount of class alone by the players around here. FINE HER NOW!!!!! TOO BAD!!!

But the Wta made a comment at the time of IW and the trainer even came out and mentioned something to defend Venus, yet no one is coming forward for Justine, not even her paid goons are saying anything which makes it even more insulting to the fans and her peers.

read this from Indian Wells 2001:

Serena Williams showed impressive mental toughness Saturday as she prevailed 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 against Kim Clijsters and several thousand relentlessly booing spectators. The boos were a consequence of her sister Venus's withdrawal from their semifinal match Thursday only two minutes before it was due to begin. As ESPN's Cliff Drysdale noted, had Venus given even half an hour's notice that she would not play, another match could have been brought in for the waiting crowd and TV cameras. Drysdale commented that Thursday's events were bad for the tournament and for tennis in general.

The crowd was not in a forgiving mood two days later. Many booed Serena as soon as she walked out on the court and continued all the way through her victory celebration. Adding to the controversy was renewed speculation that Richard Williams, Venus and Serena's father, might have engineered what transpired. Elena Dementieva, who lost to Venus in the quarterfinals, said afterward that she thought Richard Williams would decide which sister would win the semifinal. This led to sharp denials by Richard, Venus, and Serena, as well as Bart McGuire, CEO of the WTA Tour. The trainer who treated Venus's right-knee tendinitis also defended the legitimacy of her injury.

Clijsters, one of the most promising young players on the tour, defeated the top seed, Martina Hingis, in the semifinals. Serena has more firepower than Hingis though, especially on the serve, and at all of of 19, more experience than the 17-year-old Clijsters. Both young women were a little taken aback by the crowd's behavior. As reported by ESPN, Serena said, "How many people do you know go out there and jeer a 19-year-old? I'm just a kid," and Clijsters commented, "The crowd was very loud, even when she missed a first serve they were clapping. It's not her fault. She's still a tennis player. She's a very nice person and everything."

No doubt, the next Williams vs. Williams match will be watched with great interest. Our forum members are, thus far, squarely behind Venus and Serena and not too happy with Dementieva.

Wait, because a crowd at Indian Wells behaved like jackals, the WTA/ITF should act like idiots too?

Justine should clearly be on trial in the Hague, like Slobodan Milosevic. ;)

The jury is gearing up for her right now, she will be taking her seat soon.....to hell with the trial, the evidence and the money she earned from her crime says she is GUILTY!! We don't want the money back, just for her to buy some class and use it wisely, while she is at it too, maybe she could buy some consideration and humility also.

Isn't the Wta and Itf making money off of the fans and the promoters. They brand themselves as the governing body of the sport so they need to step up and make moves to prevent something like this from happening again.

Whether you want to be funny or not or just scarcastic but money is why the players all play. Money is what fans paid to see and money is what promoters and sponsors that JooJoo even acknowledged and thanked at the ceremony, so where am I wrong? Passive mentality!!! :haha: :haha:

You gotta be kidding me!

How can you be passive when you have all this suppressed anger? Anger with stuff that you bring up that is 5 years old (IW) and anger still at what happened at the AO!!! You have real, real, emotional mental problems! This is my profession dear .... I know about these things.

Of course it is OK to express your feelings. It's according what you are expressing! To be this angry and upset about a tennis match well .... you have problems don't you?

Go see a therapist dear - please ... pretty please for your own sake!

wow!!! what is with u calling me idiot and so forth? ur fav is an idiot who don't care a damn about no one else but Pierre or carlos and Justine. Unless ur name falls under one of those then u will be fine if not, you should watch what u say cos the player u call fav just made u look like an ass in front of millions.......go take that and do something with it....:fiery:

WRONG!! My husband is in the pool at the back of the house and I am in the study!

I can't see the street from my window - my drive is far too long - at least half a mile!
