This is from Jon Wertheim's latest mail bag.

"As for your other point, I wonder if the folks from JHH's camp and at the WTA -- make that the SONY ERICSSON WTA Tour -- have grasped the dimensions of this p.r. crisis. I easily got 250 emails from you guys, and they were running 95 percent against Henin-Hardenne. Tennis Nation is really cracking on her. This isn't the usual partisan rooting. These are sentiments like Ted's. "I used to admire her pluck, but I simply can't support [her] any longer."

While, I do NOT think Justine is the personification of evil, or a member of al-Qaida or even a card carrying member of Bush's neo-conservative brain trust, I do think she has dug herself a very big hole to climb out of.

I don't think this is going to go away any time soon, meaning that the crowd is going to be pulling for her opponent in just about any match she would play in the near future.

And her every move is going to be scrutinized.

And incidentally, another question in Wertheim's mailbag insinuates that he and the rest of the press went easy on JHH, because she is white. The fan wrote that Serena would have been delt with more harshly, had she commited the same offense.

Sorry, since almost no one has stepped forward to defend Justine, I think that writer is crazy. Besides, this is not a good topic to bring up. Didn't Serena retire under questionable circumstances from a couple of matches herself earlier in her career?

there are questionable retirements, and then there are questionable retirements in a GRAND SLAM FINAL. Huge difference.

Henin may not care about her image, but she does care about her bottom line. And when that bottom line starts taking a hit from this controversy, i think she will finally figure out how badly she screwed up.

Not only that, but Serena's retirements were prior to her winning a grandslam title. Justine knows the feeling of winning her first grandslam and how wonderful it was, she took that away from Amelie. That's the thing that bothers me the most, it was Amelie's FIRST slam win after many tries and disappointment. If Justine couldn't dig deep enough in her self to stand on the court for 4 more games, that says a lot about her character.
