Not to be picky, but I've been around tennis for a long time, and have heard how use of the words "winning a grand slam" have come to mean just one major title. Only Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, and Steffi Graf have won "the Grand Slam"- all four in one calendar year. Dementieva is probably the best player still out there to have never won a major. I'd bet the farm that she'll never even come close to winning a Grand Slam.

Old Macdonalds?

lol :o I couldn't help it!

She's reached two finals before. Granted in one she was a no show and yes, there's no hope of her winning Wimbledon. Now she could manage another final due to consistant inconsistancy.

i agree, dementieva is definitely the best player to not win a slam, but i really can't see her EVER doing it, even though i really like her.

I think she is the best player not win a slam but not in a Kim and Amélie sense they have always been consisentent won loads of tournements, reached #1 and won the YEC before winning a slam.
Elena I am not so sure about her winning a slam.

How can you say that??? How???? The ITF recognized it and she got the money. Chris was going for it at '83 Wimbledon. Six straight is better than five. Waaaaaaa!!!!

In my opinion, Petrova, Schnyder, and Dementieva still would have to become one single entity to deserve a slam.

Its not an impossible idea. A couple of years ago scientist found out how to make a baby from two eggs.
It would be nice to use this technology not only on lesbians who wish all men would just die off like the dinosaurs.
I am gonna still go with Schnetieva.

There are maybe a dozen players that enter each major with a realistic chance of winning it and Dementieva is one of them, so it's not impossible that she will do it one day. Problem is that she can beat the best one day and lose to a nobody next. But with the right draw and if she can play her best tennis when it's needed most, who knows?

Once again, I must explain that you who are stuck in the reality based community must get over that fact and stop referring to Dementieva as the "best player never to win a slam" and simply refer to her as the "best player."

Mary Joe has moved on. Fernandez adorable child Isabella is her grand slam now.
Pam has moved on as well.
If you cant win a slam just have tons of cute children and make one play tennis.
It seems to have worked for Melanie Molitor.

No, I don't think she is the best player ever not to win a slam title just currently, I think Helena Sukova or I have heard people mention Rosie Casels do not know much about her or her results but she was supposed to be a great player.

Look, if Myskina, Kusnetsova, and even Majoli can win one, then the talented but erratic Elena can win too, definately. Remember, luck plays a large role in winning one too. Just ask Momo.

If it was up to me Cappy (PLEEEEAAAASSSSE COME BACK JEN :hysteric: ) and Hingis would win everything. But I wouldn't mind if sooner or later Elena wins a major. Such a lovely girl, who could begrudge her winning a big one?

I would say Patty , hopefully at the Aus or French, 2nd would be Dementieva - U.S. Open - and Petrova will just make the quarters for the rest of her career and lose to Sharapova each time in an awful match!

I think she deserves that mantle now having already made the final of a grand slam twice and has looked more dangerous in them over a longer period of time than the likes of Nadia and Patty.

It's not only inaccurate, but flat-out wrong. This is one of the things that always bothered both Pete Sampras and the great Rod Laver, and it's a shame because it diminishes the difficulty and great prize that The Grand Slam truely is. When I hear a player today saying they want to win a grand slam, it makes me cringe, because they are almost never using the term correctly. It should be "I would like to win a major", or (goddess forbid) give the actual credit to the tournament they would like to or think they can win, "I would like to win at Roland Garros", or, in the past tense when referring to accomplishments "I've won 4 majors already", etc. Sure, it's not going to change the axis of the planet, but it's still annoying, and I'll point it out every time even if no one else but Steffi Graf, Margaret Court, Rod Laver, and (up there somewhere swinging away) Maureen Connolly and Don Budge is listening.
