Taupo has a population of 20,310 (2001 census). Until 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989) Taupo was officially described as a city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_New_Zealand), but it is now administered by the Taupo District Council, the district including both Taupo itself and the surrounding hinterland. Despite this, it is still occasionally referred to as a city. Taupo is located at the northeast corner of Lake Taupo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Taupo), and functions as a tourist centre, particularly in the summer.
The name Taupo comes from Maori (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maori), the full name is Taupo-nui-a-Tia. Taupo means shoulder cloak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloak), nui big, a of and Tia the name of the discoverer of the lake: literally translated it means "The great cloak of Tia". It is situated on a stretch of State Highway 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_State_Highway_network), shared with State Highway 5.
To the north of the town is the geothermal power station at Wairakei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wairakei), and hot springs suitable for bathing are located at several places in the vicinity of Taupo. One of New Zealand's most spectacular waterfalls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterfall), the Huka Falls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huka_Falls) is also close to the town on the nascent Waikato River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato_River).

Rain & Loss For Jones At Taupo
Rain put a dampener on first round play at the inaugural LochEagles US$10,000 women's tennis Futures.
The day was also notable for one of New Zealand's most promising players, Sacha Jones, 15 of Auckland losing her first round match.
Jones ranked at 741 in the world in seniors lost to the 606th ranked Biffy Kaufman of the United States 6-2 7-6(5) in hot conditions after play had been delayed for two hours after light drizzle.
The tall Kaufman, 24 successfully charged the net forcing Jones into uncharacteristic errors in the first set.
In the second set Jones fought back to lead 3-1 but then lost the next four games before managing to claw her back to a tiebreak which she lost seven points to five against the flat-hitting Kaufman.
Meanwhile second seed Emily Hewson of Australia won her match in straight sets over Korea's Hee-Sun Lyoo-Suh but third seed Lauren Barnikow of the United States was defeated 6-2 6-0 by talented British player Jade Curtis who turns 16 later this week.
As a result of the rain which became steady late in the afternoon all first round matches including the contest between Kiwis Leanne Baker and Kairangi Vano as well as Ellen Barry against Haruka Fujishiro of Japan will be completed tomorrow (Thursday) starting at 11am at the Taupo Tennis Club.
Top seed Francesca Lubiani verus Kiwi Emma Hayman will be completed with Lubiani leading 2-0 in the first set. All second round singles will also be played.

"Winner & Runner-Up For Baker
Leanne Baker scored one from two in the finals of the US$10,000 Taupo tennis Futures winning the singles title over Japan's Natsumi Hamamura but losing the doubles title with Francesca Lubiani.
Baker, 25 took only an hour and four minutes to defeat the sixth seed Hamamura 6-1 6-2."
Prior to the match the Waikato player who was the tournaments fourth seed with a ranking of 433 was concerned about her 484th ranked opponent.
"I was worried about her and the way she had been playing. I stuck to my game plan and just stayed solid. I served well and kept focussed," said Baker.
The game started fortuitously for Baker who double faulted on the first point of the match but managed to stay calm to win the game and then break her opponents serve the very next game as Hamamura served three double faults.
"The double fault was not a good start," said Baker "In the end everything just went right."
By sticking to her game plan of keeping the points short and serving well Baker was able to add the inaugural Taupo title to her previous wins at Coatzacoalios in Mexico(1999), Felixstowe in England(99), Jessi in Italy last year and Wellington also in 2005.
"It's a good start to the year. It's pretty good to get some money behind me so I can go to the tournaments in Australia," said Baker who plays the US$10,000 ASB International in Wellington starting on Tuesday where she is the defending champ.
The victory was also the first for Baker in front of her mother, Anne and father, Lou who have supported her financially through her tennis career. "It was pretty cool for them to watch me win".
In the doubles final Baker and Lubiani the tournaments top seed lost to second seeded Americans Lauren Barnikow and Christina Fusano 6-4 6-4"
