Mirza def Azarenka

There werent that many people watching this match, for a show court, and a lot of the crowd were Indians supporting Mirza, but there were also a lot of non-Indians supporting her too. Both players hit the ball hard but were erratic and made lots of UEs as well as winners. Mirza hit some huge forehands but went for too much at times, and Azarenka hit some very nice backhands. The momentum kept swinging, Mirza was the first to get a lead and served for the 1st set at 5-3, but then Vika came back and got it to 6-5, then Mirza held, saving set points I think, and it went to a TB. Both players also had leads in the TB, and had chances, but Mirza prevailed 8-6, as Vika made too many errors at the end. In the 2nd set Mirza played really well and got an early break, then I left the match.

Nakamura def Cornet

I was amazed at how much support there was for Aiko in this match. Last couple of years there was hardly anybody cheering for her, today there was a huge section cheering for her, with tshirts spelling out her name, and lots of printed signs. All the Aiko supporters had balloon clappers things, with her name and official logo printed onto them. It was all very sophisticated, and produced by her new sponsor, Nikke. I'll post some photos in my pic thread later. It was not just Japanese or Asian people, but quite a few white Aussies who were supporting her too lol. I wonder how she got so many fans. They were all doing chants for her, and cheering a lot.
I got there in the 2nd set, and Aiko was not playing well, hitting lots of errors, and couldnt keep the ball in consistently. In the 3rd set she got it together and started playing like she should, hitting hard flat balls from side to side, and dominating the points. Alize was forced to retrieve all the time, and hit some good shots on the defense, but Aiko was too good and too consistent. The only thing with Aiko is that instead of taking one hand off to hit overheads, she'd let them drop then hit a normal double handed groundstroke, which let Alize back into the points.

Chakvetadze def Zheng

This match was very high quality, with both players playing quite well. Anna was hitting hard, accurate groundstrokes, moving Jie around from side to side, and Jie did some brilliant counterpunching, hitting hard on her backhand. I saw the 3rd set and Anna was up 3-1, then Jie fought back to go ahead 4-3, then Anna won the next 3 games to win 6-4. Anna was hitting a lot of winners at the end, and bending over and clenching her fist like Serena does. This match reminded me of the one Jie lost at the AO last year, finishing late, at about 8.30pm, and a high quality close match which Jie lost.

Jackson def Tanasugarn

Tammy played well in the first set and was serving for the set at 5-3 when she started making errors and let Jamea back into it. She also wasted many break points on Jamea's serve. It went to a TB, and Tammy played ok in the TB, winning some long rallies, but Jamea played really well, hitting a few winners. Jamea took the TB, and I left the match. I heard that Tammy had a shoulder injury in the 2nd set which she lost pretty easily. From what I saw today and in quallies, Tammy's form seems to be ok, but then whenever she has break points or is ahead in the set, she starts choking and making loads of errors, and thats why shes losing or isnt winning as easily as she should. Shes been wasting chances all week and unlike the players in quallies, Jamea didnt let her get away with it.

Yuan def Czink

Meng played extremely well, hardly making any errors and hitting pretty hard, moving the ball around, and playing with a lot of variety. Meng defended really well, when Czink attacked she turned the point around and won most of the time. When Meng was 4-0 up in the 2nd, it was game point for Czink and after a rally, Meng was wrongfooted and fell over. She strained a leg muscle in the fall, the opposite leg to the one that was already taped from the match against Beygelzimer. So she called the trainer and got the other thigh taped, so she had both legs taped and looked like a mummy. Czink wasnt happy about Yuan taking the injury time out, and at the end she didnt shake Meng's hand, which was pretty immature as the injury time out had no bearing on the outcome. Meng was leading 4-1 (double break) before she was injured anyway, and was completely outplaying her, and in any case, it wasnt like she was faking, because she did fall. So I have no idea what Czink's problem was.

Yan def Dechy

Yan was up 5-3 in the 1st set when I joined the match, her choked a bit and starting to make a lot of errors, also she wasnt going to very much and just trying to be consistent. Dechy hit some nice angled winners and took the set in a TB. In the 2nd set Yan started playing much better, hitting really hard and close to the lines, the backhand was a real weapon for her, and she hit many winners and forced many errors with her powerful backhand. Dechy was completely outplayed, but she had some bps in a couple of games, which she couldnt take. Yan won the 2nd set easily, then I left.

Thanks for the report. Strange that Czink would react like that. She was totally out of the match by that time and I would have thought she would have been pleased with the chance to get a breather to regroup.

Wow, Meng falls alot and takes a lot of time-outs but weird reaction from Czink (Though I could see how that's annoying) but no excuse for not shaking Meng's hand...

I'm really surprsied that Aiko has such big support, I didn't know she was that well known...Great to hear!!!

TOo bad for Jie and Tammy but great for Zi!
