I'll say! U go Serg & Marti.

Spanish golf star Sergio Garcia and his Swiss Miss, tennis champ Martina Hingis, in Spain recently after playing a friendly tennis match. Garcia will be in New York area June 3-9 to defend his Buick Classic title.

May 8, 2002 -- Tiger Woods would have shifted uncomfortably in his seat and given a well-prepared non-answer at the mere scent of a question regarding his personal life.

Sergio Garcia, when asked yesterday how he'd characterize his ongoing relationship with Swiss tennis star Martina Hingis, broke into a wide smile, as if he couldn't wait to tell the world about his girl.

"The first thing I'll say is this: My tennis game is better than her golf game," Garcia said during a teleconference to promote the Buick Classic at the Westchester Country Club, where he'll defend his title June 3-9.

"It [his relationship with Hingis] has been great," Garcia said. "We're helping each other out. We understand each other. It's not easy to find that in a girl. It has been fun, and I hope it keeps working."

This will be Garcia's third straight Buick appearance. The current seventh-ranked player in the world finished third in 2000 before winning last year. He loves the course, on which he's shot under par in his last seven rounds, including the last six in the 60s.

"I like the course because it plays tough," Garcia said. "The greens are small and firm."

Unfortunately for the New York golf audience, Woods, the world's best player, will not play. He never plays the week before a major, and the U.S. Open is the following week at Bethpage State Park on Long Island.

Garcia, who's playing at the Byron Nelson in Texas this week along with Woods, called it a "pity" that Woods won't be in the Buick Classic field, saying, "You always want to compete against him and have a chance to beat him."

I don't know about anybody else - but I've felt for a long time that this relationship between Martina & Sergio was serious. I even mentioned marriage in the Locker Room Confrontations' Thread. IMO - these two are the real deal. It wouldn't surprise me if they got married. I don't know where it (perception) came from exactly w/me - but if I were to suppose - I think it was when the media first started reporting in the news that Martina was with Sergio at the first tourney where she accompanied him. Most people don't just follow their friends to things like that.

I do declare about it all - though. You could have knocked me ova w/a feather. IMO - Martina is just as smitten as Sergio seems to be. Who would have thunk it - huh?

I think Martina relishes having a man to call her own. She has most likely been trying to find a man in order to break away from her Mums some, and it must help that maybe mums kind of likes Sergio. I bet she approves of him for some reason - and that fact has helped Martina to decide in her heart that this just may be the man for her.

Remember - you heard it here first folks.

I wish them both well in all of their endeavors.

It appears in the below article that Martina thought she had a great chance against Venus at Hamburg - and that's exactly how she should have thought - IMO. But - she fell a little short.

Hingis has No1 Williams in her sights

Saturday May 4, 2002
The Guardian

Venus Williams, the world No1, recovered from a slow start to beat Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in three sets to set up a semi-final against Martina Hingis in the Betty Barclay Cup in Hamburg.
Williams, 21, dropped her serve in the third game and lost the first set before rallying for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over the veteran Spaniard.

Trailing 4-1 in the first set, Williams called for her trainer to give her a fresh bandage on an inflamed ankle. But she stepped up her game in the second set and then rolled through the third, converting her first match point.

Hingis, seeded third, had an easier passage into the semi- finals, beating the sixth seed Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-4.

"I want to be No1 again," she said after beating the 19-year-old Slovak who won her first career title earlier this year at Indian Wells. Hingis was the losing finalist on that occasion but a repeat rarely looked likely yesterday; Hantuchova wasted a set point in the first and all Hingis had to do was wait for mistakes.

"I was better prepared this time," said the 21-year-old Swiss. "I didn't underestimate her. I moved better.

"If you stop believing in yourself you might as well quit playing," added Hingis, who held the No1 spot for 209 weeks before ankle surgery last October. She has won two titles this year.

Williams, who is chasing her fifth title of the year, has played Hingis 18 times in all and trails 10-8.

Meanwhile the United States captain, Billie Jean King, hopes Williams will make herself available for the Americans' attempt to stay in the world group of the Fed Cup.

The States, who lost at home to Austria last weekend in a tie overshadowed by the sacking of Jennifer Capriati for refusing to follow team rules on private coaching sessions, were yesterday drawn against Israel in July in a play-off match they must win if they are to avoid dropping out of the elite.

"Serena [Williams] didn't give me an answer as to whether she'd be interested [in playing]," King said. "Venus was more forthcoming with 'Yeah, I think I want to play'."

As long as they are happy, that is all that matters. I say good luck to both of them and take love where you can get it because it is so hard to find someone to love.:hearts:

The last time they asked Sergio about his relationship with Martina he said it was "O.K." At least he elaborated a bit more this time!! :hearts:
