View Full Version : Is Hingis still the top player in WTA?

May 8th, 2002, 02:19 PM
Hey, guys, what do you think about it?
I am a big fan of Martina,
whatever what the rank she is , i still supporing her.......

May 8th, 2002, 02:38 PM
NO. She hasn't been for some time now. Keep up.

May 8th, 2002, 02:53 PM
Support her all you want, but she's not the "top" player. ;)
Though I guess it could depend on what you mean by top!

Martina is one of the top players. Maybe she didn't have big results lately but she still is and will always be the most talented player who plays tennis in the most beautiful way. She is a pleasure to watch. Seeing her play tennis is like watching a piece of art! Tennis won't be the same without her!

LOL, well she's a "top ten" player if that's what you mean. I like Hingis and I hope she can stay up at the top, but it's becoming a lot harder for her. She's still a solid consistent player and fun to watch (unless she is getting destroyed by a Williams).

FP, I think I have a different perception of top player than most of the tennis fans. For me, although winning matches is important to be a top player, it is even more important the way you play tennis. Martina is the best tennis PLAYER whereas other girls are better "ball hitters", not really "players"!

May 8th, 2002, 03:39 PM
um, martiana, i would disagree.
for me, and most others I think, winning matches is what determines the top player in the WTA. not how pretty your volley is. I think that Martina has a nice service motion - who cares? Her serve gets creamed on a regular basis. that is NOT pretty.

"ball hitters" doesn't even come close to doing the other top players justice (I assume you mean Venus, Jen and Kim since they are 1, 2 and 3 right now).

Damned, it's a shame they don't give out trophies for best tennis players...she'd still be #1:rolleyes:

This is an interesting post. I am pretty sure the original poster, Ferrero, knows Martina isn't the top player of the WTA. The top spot has a Williams name on it, something many of us thought should have been the case more than a year ago, something that I hope will stand for a long time.

However, Martina is in our consciousness a top player that can re-emerge anytime. Nobody can rule her out a priori.

To appreciate how good she is, consider the following:

- We are flamboyantly elated when our fave defeats her, which is not the case with the defeat of lower rated players.

- She almost won a Slam at Aussie-02. Even though many of us claim "almost" doesn't count, deep down we all know it does; it tells something about the levels of the players.

- On some statistical tables, she managed to be at the top while competing against other super talents: Race to Chase, YTD Prize Money. These are definitely second rate tables but not exactly contemptible; top positions in them have to be earned.

Martina fans should be proud of their girl. Deep down we all wish her well. She plays a superb brand of tennis that IMHO only Serena completely demolishes and just a few other girls can win against.

The top WTA player, she isn't; Venus is.

Only clicked on this by accident but just have to say: TennisPower, that's an excellent post. :D

The top player most likely to "lick her wounds."

(sorry Martian fans, I couldn't resist; you know I want her to get her game together)

by the way, why don't you use the search function and go through the prior post. Your thread starting is redundant.

If martina had won the Australian Open we would all have different opinions right now..

She is by far not the top player on the tour but is the most consistent.. she will always get blown off the court by the power hitters which should have happened 2-3 years ago but right now it is happening.. Martina will remain in the top 5 but at #1, I don't think so.

Yeah...since she can always go into Semi... but can't get the champ anymore!

Check the rankings next week buddy ;)

Marti is still top player even if she isn't #1 because she is the most consistent, the smartest player of all time and has the all court game that the others don't have. She is second to Seles of current players with 5 GS titles. She will be #1 again! :bounce:

Well said Venusfan :D
Freethinker ,she's going below the top 5 ranking ,becuase of her injury ,at last autumn and this week.
A healthy Hingis will always be in the top 5 ,atleast for the next 5-6 years :D.
She's too consistent to go any further below :D:D:D
No matter how much the competition would increase, she would also accordinlgly improve, work and work on her serve.
She'll always keep making the semifinals and finals of big tournies ,(do you know she's made the semifinals of 19 of the past 22 Grand Slams?) ,and having championships points and blowing them;)
All these will safely keep Miss Hingis in the top 5 for a looooong time to come.:)

I too think she will be No.1 again.
I dont mean to say ,the best unbeatable player on the tour like Venus was in the past two years.
If you remember she was No.1 in 2000 and 2001 ,while she was far from domination position. So just through consistent results ,like in 2000 she could do it ;)
Not the top player on the tour ;)Just the top player on the rankings ;)

May 9th, 2002, 07:47 AM
I have no doubt Martina will win more majors and continue to make more semis than anyone else, but she won't dominate again the way she did in 97 ... the field is just too strong now.

May 9th, 2002, 08:58 AM
yes for me, the top five are:
1. Venus
2. Serena
3. Lindsay
4. Jennifer
5. Martina

Surely any player in the top ten can be currently called 'A' top WTA player?

If the question was 'Is she 'THE' top player then I'm afraid it is a definite no. But that wasn't the question and so the answer must be yes.

May 9th, 2002, 10:25 AM
OOps! Just reread the question and it does say 'THE'!!!

So I guess the answer is no! Venus is (with Jelena as the number 2 - ok, cut me some slack here!) ;)
