View Full Version : Qualifying Day 2 report

Jan 13th, 2006, 02:10 PM
I got there at about 10am and stayed the whole day till about 8pm. It was cloudy and not very hot in the morning, but at about 1pm the sun came out and it was hot after that.

Mattek def Rolle

This was a great match with both players hitting hard, flat and aggressive groundstrokes, and produced some great winners. Rolle was up 5-3 in the first I think, then she got a bit tight and let her lead go. Mattek was the better player in the TB. It was on serve in the 2nd but in the end Rolle lost it and made loads of UE's and got really frustrated with the line calls and everything. At one stage Rolle hit a volley at Mattek, I dont know if it was intentional but Bethanie looked furious

Ting Li def Osterloh

Ting was not having a good day, she played so crap in the first set, missing lots of easy shots. Osterloh was playing well though and won it easily. In the 2nd set Ting started getting more balls in, but she still wasnt playing her best. Lilia's level went down slightly and Ting won easily. In the 3rd set it was level until 3-3, when Ting won the next 3 games, which were long close games. Ting never hit her best form but when her shots were going in she was clearly the better player, and was in control after the first set. She'll have to improve to win her next match.

Vierin def Strycova

Strycova was hitting hard as usual, and was more aggressive than Vierin, and determined the points by either making a winner or an UE. Barbora was leading by a set and 4-4, and had break point on Vierin's serve I think, but couldnt get it, and made some volleying errors to lose the game, then she lost her serve next making some easy errors. When she lost the set she was absolutely furious, throwing her racquet down hard. There were some Aussie Italians cheering on Vierin, they were the most annoying fan group by far, cheering loudly every time Vierin got a point, even when it was Barbora's unforced errors into the bottom of the net.

Bohmova def Kirkland

Bohmova played really well, mixing up loopy balls with aggressive shots and hit a lot of winners. Kirkland has great talent but Bohmova was the better player, and had answers for everything Kirkland could come up with.

Gajdosova def Gubacsi

I only saw part of the 3rd set, but Jarmila always looked in control, and was the superior player. Gubasci hit a few great shots on her backhand though. Jarmila could have won the 3rd set 6-2 as she had 0-40 at 4-2, but she made some errors and lost that game. However she was not really troubled after the first set.

Tanasugarn def Tamaela

This was a great quality match, with both players playing well. Tammy lost a 5-3 lead in the first set, but lost the lead, and was down a minibreak towards the end of the TB, but hit some big forehands to get it back level and played great points to win the TB. Tammy was in control in the 2nd set, and played well to break Tamaela twice to win the match. The last game was very long, and Elise played some excellent points to save many match points, but Tammy was too good in the end.

Hisamatsu def Koryttseva

Shiho was playing the best I've ever seen her play, hitting beautiful clean groundstrokes close to the lines, and a lot of winners. Mariya hit hard off both sides, and her forehand was especially huge, but made a lot of errors. Shiho was up 6-2 5-3 but choked it, and lost the 2nd 7-5. In the 3rd set she regrouped and got a 3-0 lead with two breaks, then Mariya called the trainer even though she wasnt injured. This broke Shiho's rhythm and Mariya came out playing great and broke he straight away. However that was the last game Mariya got, as Shiho started to play well again and won the next 3 games. Shiho was always the better player and has a chance against Li tomorrow if Ting plays like she did today.

Fuda def Alves

Everyone was wondering how Ryoko would pull up after her marathon match yesterday. She answered things pretty well with this match. She probably gave the most impressive performance of any player today, hitting hard flat groundstrokes, dominating the points and hitting winners from everywhere. Alves didnt seem to have any weapons to hurt Ryoko with, she would just get it back into play, and Ryoko would tee off. It was absolutely insane! Ryoko just couldnt miss, and she was running in and taking them out of the air with drive volley winners too. She finished up with about 30 winners and 10 UEs in only 13 games. Ryoko is such a cutie, and I hope she can keep up this form tomorrow.

Savchuk def Lisjak

Lisjak was hitting huge groundies off both sides, and grunting really loudly, but wasnt winning the points as she was too inconsistent and Savchuk played a good solid match letting Ivana self destruct.

Hsieh def Chan

Su Wei played really well, was very aggressive from the baseline, and her BH was lethal. Chan played ok and hit some good shots but Su Wei hit too many winners. Yuan was watching the match and at the end she walked off with Su Wei, and they spent the next few hours hanging out together around the grounds, they seem to be good friends. Su Wei didnt seem to be that friendly with Chan, in the match she hit a hard smash which bounced near Chan's head and she barely apologised. At the net they only had a brief handshake and didnt say anything to each other, and Su Wei went off to chat with Meng. Aussie junior player Mary Ann Liu was watching this match too.

Bondarenko def Hrdinova

Hrdinova is a very tall girl with a big first serve and big groundstrokes, but missed a lot of simple shots, could barely keep the ball in, and didnt serve well. Kateryna was very impressive, she plays like her sister, hitting very hard and aggressively, and sometimes finishing points at the net. Birnerova was there to cheer on Hrdinova too.
