View Full Version : Does insulting other posters ....

Volcana

... actually accomplish anything except letting the target know how much you despise them?

I'm not criticising that as a goal. Just wondering if I'm missing some other 'benefit'.

It's funny you post this topic because I was thinking about something similar last night. I was wondering why we are sometimes so sensitive when it comes to our faves. Few, if any, of us actually know any of the players personally. And the players could certainly care less about what we post on the board. Yet some of us will actually resort to personal insults (and who knows whatever else) just because of some anonymous opinion.

When I first started posting, I used to get into it with a lot of posters. I admit that I enjoyed it a bit. Now, I don't really have time for it (unless it's like 1:00AM and I have nothing better to do). I also realize that there are quite a few immature posters -- both young and old -- who really don't have anything of substance to say, and therefore can only resort to name-calling. That's fine, because usually I read their first post and then click ignore. It works like a charm.

BTW, I love all of your posts. They are always thoughtfully well-written and quite interesting.

Again, as it often happens with Volcana's threads, I fail to understand the purpose of this one..

Do you want an unanimous condemnation of name-calling?
Do you want someone to say that insulting is good?
Do you simply enjoy asking rhetoric questions?
And why in "General Messages"? Is it tennis-related?

No offence meant, but I like studying the patterns of human behaviour, so I am curious of what could have triggered creating a thread like that?

My sentiments exactly!!!

Volcana, the only other "benefit"-- if the "tongue-lashing' was done tactfully-- is that you convey to said member of the board that they can continue to post their bullshit but people will call them on it. I'm referring to insults that are disguised as some form of relevant criticsm. The overt insults go without saying but the covert efforts are the ones that I personally enjoy (no shame) responding to.

Ys,
Not trying to be funny at all here, but you always state the lack of usefulness for Volcana's threads, but it seems that you always post in them. I wonder if you do it subconsciously.

Volcana,
There is the initial stimulation of insulting someone who has pissed you off, but it never really makes a person's life any better.

yes ys this is the third thread in a row that Volcana has started that you seem to have a distinct dislike towards.I feel that you have a problem with her/him.

And you are kinda pointing out one of the points of this thread:rolleyes:

Are you serious, ys? Volcana posts very good threads. I guess it's just a matter of personal taste. This thread in particular is useful because it's interesting and gives us something to talk about. That's at least as useful as any other.

Those covert ones really get my attention, too. There's nothing like a skillful "anti-fan". Sometimes they can make posting on this board as demanding as any full-time job.

ahem...i guess it is a question of personal taste and some will go around with socks on with their sandals this summer and some thank god, will not. :p

High fives to BR, vw and DF! I like the way you guys express yourselves! :D

I dont think there is a point to name-calling, but it is a way to express yourself to that person(s). I'd explode if I didn't say something to someone if they were bugging me, it's a way to cool off and chill out. I do most of my spazzing at the GoTennis messageboard, they have plenty of people there I can yell at.:)

Well, those kind of threads are rare these days - IMHO people ought to be given the benefit of the doubt at least once. Unfortunately, owing to previous history almost all groups of fans are hypersensitive (I know I am) these days and a lot of people trying to start debate tend to get their heads ripped off.

ys, although I fail to understand the point of your post I have to admit it was so out of nowhere that it made me laugh. I don't know where that fits into your study of human behaviour but hey, it's only fair to share :).

Ditto Bright Red, and Beige..As usaul :D!

y_s - I think your a cool poster too, but if you dont like certain threads or posters you know what to do.

Volcana - You rock, so inteligent and insightful a great assest to the board! :D

ys - The thread is about EXACTLY what it says. I was actually thinking about WHY people insult other posters, and the only real good reason I could come up was that one.

maccardel
May 7th, 2002, 11:12 PM
Exactly. I was thinking the same thing too. Some posters are just so fanatic about their favs that they would not see them for who they are. This prevents any non-fan or fan from voicing their true feelings or opinions I should say for that matter.

Last month you chastised me for saying something about "Serena's" boobs and for that I apologize...Martina had just lost to her and I was seeing red and could not lash out with enough venom at the time..which is very uncharactistic of me..I'm usually level headed most times but I have since learned from your rebuff..now, as far as other posters are concerned I think everybody is entitled to their opinion but if they get carried away with insulting one another...it accomplishes nothing...and should be snuffed in the bud...not carry the thing over and over by posting insults back and forth!! Amen:rolleyes:

Debbie:

I always enjoyed your post. Even the way you write then. Sorry, you feel trapped in life. You can always pm me.

Volcano:

I always enjoy your post too. Keep being you.

Not starting a fight. I don't understand you. You seem terribly bitter. What I have been trying to analyze from you is what is your motivation?

Most objective posters will not get nasty with another poster unless that person says something nasty and cruel about their fav.

I applaud any person in here who will defend their fave from the face of outright nastiness.

It all boils down to people just need to watch what they say. Does not mean you cannot express you true feelings as maccardel suggests, it just means that we all need to respect all the players' fans even when we don't like them.

Debbie - wow  but it's pretty much on point:)

HI Beige, Bright Red:wavey:

Volcano - 99.9% of the time I enjoy reading the threads you create. You present them in such a way that usually results in positive responses (this does not mean the responders agree or disagree but respond in an intellectual, respectful manner.

Now there was that one time... (just kidding);)

Love your stats as well.
