View Full Version : Rank your top 5 claycourters so far this year

May 7th, 2002, 01:50 AM
I believe the clay season is almost halfway through. In light of the numerous threads and discussions about how players need to be ordained, have a particular kind of slide and an eye-catching smile before being considered a good claycourter, or to use the technical term, a claycourt specialist, I thought I'd rank my top 5 specialists so far this year.

1) Venus Williams
2) Iva Majoli
3) Kim Clijsters
4) Justine Henin
5) Patty Schnyder

At least they are the ones who've "court" my eye. What are yours? Give reasons, if you like. I'm too lazy to. And please disregard my opening remarks.

1. Kim Clijsters
2. Venus Williams
3. Iva Majoli (she's number one in my mind, but I'm trying to be realistic)
4. Patty Schnyder
5. Justine Henin

1. Venus Williams ( 2 clay court finals 1 win 1 loss, but should've won both)
2. Kim Clijsters (good showing at Hamburg, and runner up last year)
3. Serena Williams (capable of beating Iva Majoli and Patty and Kim and...etc....
4. Iva Majoli (Good showing at FCC)
5. Jennifer Cappy (yes i can't stand her, but hey she can play. won the french last year, but played a serena williams that didnt play on any clay before the french and was takin to 3 sets, so if she plays a williams this year, expect to her to get taken out in 2 easy sets, they have her number right now)

1. Venus Williams - Tier 2 title, plus a Tier 2 final, gives her the edge so far.

2. Kim Clijsters - Only 1 event, but it was a Tier 2 title and she beat the #1 player in the world in doing so.

3. Iva Majoli - Tier 1 winner, plus a Tier 3 final seems grounds for a high rating, but isn't higher because of 1st round loss in Sarasota, and 2nd round of Amelia Island.

4. Justine Henin - Solid performance at Tier 2 Amelia Island, where she seemed poised to beat Venus. Missed Charleston, but reached Hamburg quarterfinals, a decent result.

5. Jelena Dokic - She's been overlooked somewhat, but she did prevail in Sarasota (though low tier), plus reached Amelia Island and Hamburg semis. Downfall was a poor showing in Charleston.

Other notables:

*Jennifer Capriati (only 1 event, but not bad reaching a Tier 1 semifinal).

* Patty Schnyder (quarterfinal in Sarasota, and a very good run at Charleston with big wins over Serena and Jennifer. Downfalls were 2nd round showing at Amelia Island, and disappointing 1st round of Hamburg).

*Svensson, Muller, Serna, Montolio (must be doing at least something right to each come away with a clay title (though small one) this year).

1.Kim (first claycourt tournament, first final of the year, first win over number one ---> first title this year :) )
2.Venus (she had the best results, but didn't play real claycourt tennis...she wasn't on the winning hand in Amelia Island...Justine was the better player there IMO...Justine is still a choker, which allowed Venus to win that tournament)
3.Iva Majoli (she belongs in this top 5, that's obvious)
4.Jelena Dokic (she made it to two semi-finals, each time giving up with an injury...she could have done much better if healthy)
5.Justine Henin (played great tennis in Amelia Island....but she's still a CHOKER :( )

WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BEST CLAY COURT PLAYER THIS YEAR IS VENUS and HERE's why.. and those who didn't pick Venus are just lying to themselves.:):)

Venus beat:

Squarez
Arantxa
Hingis
Henin
Took a set 6/1 off of Clijsters
Smashnova.. I THINK???

and other lower ranked but clay court specialist.. lol

note: she beat Hingis and ASV back to back on the slow red clay.:) Nobody has beaten the best CLAY COURT players as much as Venus has this season.. so far.:):)

2] Kim Clijsters
3] Justine Henin
4] Iva Majoli
5] Jelena Dokic

Serena and Jennifer don't make the list cause they lost shockingly...

Patty is not on that list as she has not done anything after the 2 big wins...

Amazing to see Venus 1/2 on most lists... never thought I'd see that in my life... ;)

So far. We'll see what Jennifer and Serena are made of this week hopefully. Looks like Martina's missed the boat, Amelie needs to play catch up. Fast. As does anyone else who is thinking of joining this list.

Interesting feat of logic... I don't know about anyone else, but a win is a frigging win regardless of how ugly the match was played. Why the hell is there a different standard for Venus??? Would you say the same if Justine had won the match??? I think NOT!!!
P.S. Justine had a 2nd chance to prove what a great claycourter she is, and guess what? she failed yet again
  :fiery:

Hey Infiniti :wavey:

don't get mad please...it's only tennis :)

What I meant was that Justine lost the match; Venus didn't win the match because she's such a fabulous claycourt player., she won because Justne choked...

Venus is the best tennis-player in the world, but I just have the feeling that Kim is slightly better on clay at the moment, because she can take more out of the clay surface...it's slightly more suited for her;...Venus is the close second for me...

A win is a win...I know...but I just saw that win of Venus more as a loss of Justine..that's my opinion...:)

peace

Hoops - I'm not sure how can conclude Mary Pierce has had a good year on clay. But since you're the only person (including me) who DIDN'T put Venus on their list, I won't argue about your picks. You went against the tide, which is cool.

Interesting picks, everyone, though Venus and Kim seem to dominate. I guess one way of looking at it is through the number of titles or final appearances. Another way will be to look at who's defeated who so far this season.

On both counts, Venus and Kim seem quite up there. I'll still rank Iva over Kim because Iva won a tier 1 title, defeating a red-hot claycourter in the process.

Most lists though are pretty much representative of whats happened so far and the striking thing is its rather different from what most people would have predicted a few weeks back.

Just a little note to everyone, Jelena has won a title and made 2 semi-finals on clay so far. Her only real disappointment was Hilton Head, where she said she felt weak because of a stomach virus.

Amelia Island - Tier II

1st Rnd: def BYE
2nd Rnd: def Mary Pierce (FRA) 6-2 6-0
3rd Rnd: def (14) Emmanuelle Gagliardi (SWI) 6-3 6-4
QF: def (10) Elena Dementieva (RUS) 0-6 7-6(3) 6-1

and... Arantxa of course!!! :)
