News Flash! Parts Of Draw Coming Threw!
Maria To Possibly Face Maria In 4th Round! But Serena First Has To Get Past Na Li! Possible Semi Finalist Opponent Is Davenport! But Lindsey Has To Beat Justine In The 1/4's First, And Also Venus Is In The Same 1/2 Of The Draw!!! Mauresmo Clijsters Pierce And Petrova Are In Second Half! I Can Just See It Now Maria Will Beat Serena Easily But Only For Venus To Get Revenge In The Quaters!(presuming Venus Is In Marias Part Of The Draw!)
This Draw Is Really Tough! But Good Luck Maria You Can Do It!

Maria v Serena round of 16 if all goes to plan

bellascarlett
Jan 13th, 2006, 12:37 AM
the more i think about the draw, the more im liking maria's chances. :clap2: I mean if she's healthy, she should win her early rounds (she should get past peng right? umm). her fourth round against serena is doable. serena isnt exactly in the best of forms and a potential rematch could motivate maria even more. lena/nadia in quarters isnt that bad. im hoping she gets lindsay in the semis and well whoever in the finals...

well i guess compared to lindsay's draw, maria's is pretty okay. kim has the best draw out of all imo while amelie has people like nicole and nastya in hers.

Well its a tougher draw then i would have liked. Her first round should be a good solid intro back into tournament play but Peng will be tough and Well Serena will be just a huge test and if maria can get thru that match i think it could be what she needs to go all the way. If she can get to the quarters im confident she will be able to beat Petrova or Dementieva and a semi final match looks to be another eppic facing either Lindsay Venus or Justine all winnable but i would hope Lindsay. Any how one match at a time Masha good luck

Maria Croft
Jan 13th, 2006, 09:38 AM
This draw is not so bad, her first match is a great opportunity to test herself for the rest of the tournament, her 2nd and 3rd round matches could be tough if she plays against Peng and Medina-Garrigues, but she should be able to handle them, hard to tell because we really don't have any idea how Maria will play, but if she gets past that she should be more then ready to beat either Serena or Daniela, and well, the QF and beyond can be so many people, let's see Maria get there first ;)

I just hope it's not Petrova again if Maria would make it, she has played her in the last two Grand Slam QF matches

madame_maria
Jan 13th, 2006, 01:20 PM
i'd probably expect her to take this route. that's if she goes all the way which i hope she will =)

S.Kloesel
S.Peng
(28) A.Medina-Garrigues
(13) S.Williams
(9) E.Dementieva
(1) L.Davenport
(2) K.Clijsters

the 4th, quarters, semis and final will all be blockbusters. they'd prob show all these matches purely based on starpower. let's go Maria!

yeah once shell face serena and beat her im confident maria can win, well actually depending on who gets to the other side of the draw, we definitly dony want kim, although maria showed spurts of a true great future champion in that match, she just needs to play like that for the whole match and hey presto the match is hers! so good luck maria, were all rooting for you! win the aussie!

Howdy all! managed to sneek onto the net for a few minutes. Melbourne totally kicks arse, and its great meeting the maria fans!
We saw a tiny glimpse of maria today, she was giving an interview below a balcony, so we came within 10 meters - she looks fabulous as always.

there's some posters around the city of maria in a blue dress - looks pretty classy, dunno if she'll be wearing it or not.

as for the draw, it's a shame it's top heavy, but i have no doubt that Maria will fight her way through a successful campaign.

Just a heads up for Monday, Maria is the 3rd match on Rod Laver Arena (after a davenport match and a nalbandian match).

hope to catch you guys later.

who knows what british eurosport will show,I'm guessing 1 hour max for dav match,2 hours + for nalbandian that means rough guess at 3-4 am in the morning in the uk,I'm sure as hell not getting up at that time as its not a cert they will show her match,I will set timer on capture software and hope for the best :) I'm kinda not sure why bbc are starting at 8-30 am uk(evening matches) cause I cant see tim or andy getting a evening match.

I waited through a 4 hour rain delay at Wimbledon for the semi-final.... Watched the match, went to bed at 5am, slept for 3 hours and went to school.... You can get up at 3-4am to at least check if it is on!

She played so well her serve was terrific and she has got the pace up a little from last year. One that went out was 182. Her ground strokes were terrific and she played a great match all round. Well done Masha and it was nice how she blew a kiss at the end like Trent said

Sublime serving today, Maria... I am impressed :yeah:
Anyone notice she's more subdued and concentrated, (the grunts are still there but not as loud) and she's using her brain more, knowing when to go for the kill. That was a rock solid performance. btw, I saw Serena play and well... let's just say at this point Maria's capable of feeding her bagels and breadsticks...

so anyway, HUGE improvement yet again for Maria's game. Keep it up, Angel! :hearts:

Interview after R1

M. SHARAPOVA/S. Kloesel

6‑2, 6‑1

Q. Did you have any time to feel any pain today?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Uhm, no. I actually felt pretty good. I'm really happy about it because that's one of the first times I played a match without feeling anything. You know, I don't expect it to be that like for the whole tournament. So I'm very happy I got through that one without any pain.

Q. Ideal start?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, it is. I started off really well. Usually when you don't get a lot of practice, practice matches at tournaments, coming into one of the most important tournaments of the year is ‑‑ you're not under the best condition.

But I felt really good. I felt like we had a lot of good rallies and I could get a rhythm out there. So it's a good thing.

Q. Are you expecting less of yourself this tournament because of the circumstances?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Uhm, you know, I'm just very happy to be here and I'm very happy to be, I mean ‑‑ every match that I can win, I'm just very excited 'cause a few hours before the flight I wasn't even going to go. Just to be here, just to feel healthy at the moment and to play good tennis, yeah.

Q. On the day when you've watched a number of the top seeds actually lose, do you get more nervous before you go out on court?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No. Well, I know the first matches are always tricky. You don't know. You might be playing well in practice but when you go out on the court, it's a totally different situation, and you have to be, you know, just have to be mentally and physically ready, especially these courts. I mean, it's actually faster this year because of the balls. But still every ball comes back and you just have to be on top of your game in order to finish the match.

Q. What do you do for your shoulder and pec? When the match is over, do you take preventive measures?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, well, my physio, you know, checks to make sure everything is in place, see how my muscles are after the match, yeah, just do treatment and try to keep it good.

Q. Does it hurt?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, not now. I hope you ask me that in 13 days and I'll say "Not now" too.

This was a very good match from Maria, because Kloessel was out to win it, and actually played very well, getting a lot of balls back, and hitting hard. Especially since two other unfancied players had pulled big upsets on Venus and Elena. If Maria had faltered, Kloessel could have made it a tough match. But Maria kept the lid on her in the first set and then streaked (not-literally :) ) away in the second!

Good luck with the rest of the tournament Maria! :bounce:

Q. Does it hurt?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, not now. I hope you ask me that in 13 days and I'll say "Not now" too.
That's what we all hope too, Maria!

good lick mash! your match starts in about 1 and a half hours! im really nervous as i found an article with mats wilander saying harklerod or whatever shes called will be a tough match for maria! well i certainly hope not! apparently a couple of yers ago she was climbing up the ranking and had great indoresments and potential to be the new better anna kournikova! but things got carried away and now shes 131, but she must have potential! and also i heard she married a year or 2 ago but now shes settled down she is focusing on her tennis! lets just hope maria can wipe her off the court! because as much as maria played well in the first round she did make a few mistakes on smashes and a couple of dry volleys, but then again it was her first match of the year, lets just hope she will improve for todays match! good luck maria! were all rooting for you!

Maria has won... at least that's good news....
horrible play at mid 2nd set, but got out of jail with her serves... although I'd prefer her not having to rely on them too much since her 1st serve % took a dive during the 2nd.... that's gotta be 30+ unforced errors, and by unforced I mean really UNFORCED, some of them on the would-be killing blows
other than that, a scintillating 1st set by Maria
Credit to Ashley, although she cracks during the big points (df's and all) she's been a terrific retriever tonight

kostanic will be a piece a cake. dont normally get over confident, but kostanic has been on the tour forever and has never beaten a top player. maria wont be her first. kostanic gets to 2nd round at majors then fades away, dont see that changing anytime soon. maria couldn't have asked for a better 3rd round opponent.

M. SHARAPOVA/A. Harkleroad

6‑1, 7‑5

Q. You had a bit of a problem in the second set, didn't you?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, played a really good, solid first set. Then all of a sudden I got a blister on my foot and the taping made it worse, and I started thinking about it and kind of my mind shut down for a little bit.

It's really weird. I've never gotten blisters before on my feet, so I was kind of a little shocked and forgot, you know, what I was doing out there.

So it took me a little while just to get a groove again.

Q. Would the blisters have made it difficult if it would have gone to a third set?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, the third time the taping ‑‑ the third try, it was a little bit better. But towards the end, my foot started sweating more and it started to come off so I started to feel it a little bit more. It was right in my arch so my orthotic was pushing right on it.

Should be okay. I sound like a wimp saying this to you guys.

Q. What about the other injuries? There's no flare up?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, it seems okay. Yeah, doing fine.

Q. Was it in some ways a good match to get because you did get that extra bit of time out there on the court?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, yeah. Well, I thought it was good to be in a tougher situation. I haven't felt like I've been in a tough situation because I have not played any competitive matches lately. It seems like it's been a while, so it was good to just, you know, to get that feeling again.

You know, I broke and then I didn't ‑‑ at 4‑3 I didn't take the opportunity to finish it off. Then she had set points and the set could have gone either way.

So, you know, was just good for me to kind of realize that, you know, once I'm up a break, I need to finish it off rather than just play another four games out there for the crowd.

Q. Are you physically where you want to be after a couple of matches now?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Uhm, I think there's always room for improvement, yeah, definitely. I think you can get better. I think as the challenges become bigger, I think physically you're going to get better, you know, on the court, yeah.

Q. If you compare yourself to a year ago, is there less pressure now because 12 months ago you were the reigning Wimbledon Champion, all guys were on you? Do you feel the expectations aren't as great or just the same?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, well, first of all, I have never, ever in my career felt like I had anything to prove to anyone. Now more so. I mean, I became No. 1 last year and I won a Grand Slam at 17. So, I mean, I never felt like I needed to prove anything. So, you know, I still don't.

I'm really happy to be here because I didn't think I would be here. I didn't think I would be competing. So, you know, after having a tough last six months with my shoulder injury, you know, it feels really good. I'm not expecting a lot from myself because little did I know that I would be here.

Q. As one of the game's most popular players, obviously you have a lot of off‑court interests. Do you ever find them a distraction or do you find there is a balance?>

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, I love everything I do off court. I'm not one‑dimensional. I'm always doing things. If I'm doing one thing, I'm already thinking about doing another thing. I always love to keep myself busy. I love fashion very much. I get involved with that very often. I mean, there's a lot of interesting things, you know, that I want to do after my career. I don't want to finish my tennis career and just, you know, sit there and be empty‑handed. I want to have a lot of opportunities.

Q. You think it will be in the fashion industry?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Uh‑hmm, definitely.

Q. Your thoughts on your next opponent.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Who am I playing?

Q. Kostanic.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: I played her ‑‑ last time I played her...

Q. Philadelphia 2004, I think.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Thank you.

Yeah, wasn't that three sets or something?

Q. Three sets.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Yeah, she's a lefty. Not a lot of lefties out there. I'll just have to ‑‑ can't worry about my opponent or what she's doing. I've just got to focus on my game. That's what makes me a great player, you know, I don't worry about what anyone else is doing out there. A lot of people ask me to comment on players but, I mean, it's difficult to say. I'm sure, you know, she's playing good tennis. She won two rounds.

Yeah, be ready. I have to be ready.

Q. Do you think the blisters can be a problem on Thursday or Friday?

MARIA SHARAPOVA: No, no, it won't be a problem.

Ah well, it's great news for female Andy fans as well, huh?

personally, I never like Roddick in whatever shape or form. Never liked him as a teenage NCAA champion being touted as the next big thing. Still don't like him. I know you all like him for his so-called wit and niceness, but he was rude and full of himself back then, and flashes of it still show when he argues with umpires.

And as a player, he's just a bully. But pit him against a superior talent (Federer) or a superb "battler" (Hewitt, Agassi or Nadal) and he loses his mojo.

Well, maybe I just don't like him. I mean, what self-respecting dude serves with a knee, hip and wrist bend like that?

Yes. He kept going on about how the crowd all hated Masha - which was not what I could see. He is really annoying! There used to be an address at which you could e-mail the Eurosport commentators direct - I don't know if it's still going.

Anyway Masha gave a good response when the Australian interviewer mentioned her screech. "When I do it, I don't miss the ball."

I think Masha has the strength of character to ignore the sniping.

Bring it all out, and vanquish your next opponents just as conclusively, Maria!

Maria Croft

The commentator from the Dutch channel was also annoying!

Going on and on about her grunting and how much time she took between points, how she should behave more like Steffi Graf and don't say C'mon when she was having such a big lead

I was just thinking, she's Maria! not Graf! if she just wins a tough point she is allowed to celebrate it anyway she wants!

The thing is Justine does it to but the commentator likes Henin-Hardenne so you never hear him say anything about hers, and she even does it against the opponent, Maria keeps them to herself, to make her feel good about a point, not to make her opponent feel bad

Hello,

My question is simply this.

Why is Simon Reed allowed to be so biased when he is watching a game of tennis involving Maria Sharapova?

I am a big Maria fan, and when i watch Eurosport to see her play, im always frustrated about why Simon Reed is allowed to say nasty things about Maria, and get away with it.

I currently watched the Match or Maria Sharapova vs Kostanic, in which Maria grunted in a few games. What annoys me about his commentary, is that not only does he always have to tell everyone that she is grunting, but he also has to say more things about her, which is completly irrelevant to the match.

I think Simon Reed should keep his nasty comments to himself and not share them on live television.

I have spoken to a number of people who agree with me , and believe that he is always having a moan at Maria Sharapova.

Maria won that match 6-0..6-1, and when Maria lost that 1 single game, Simon Reed again, had to be nasty and say things about Maria.
It is very clear to almost everybody who hears his commentary in tennis, that he has a hate for Maria Sharapova.

A lot of us believe that this behaviour in very inappropriate, and is very unwanted.

yours, sincerly

Josh

looking ahead... I'm sorta worried about her (only supposedly, since this tourny has been pretty weird up til now) match against Nadia... Maria always beats her in GS, but they've been very close, and Nadia is playing very well right now, just look at her scores. Nadia has it all, the power, the footspeed, the finesse... the only thing Maria has a clear-cut advantage in is the mentality. So let's hope that will be enough of an edge to propel her through :)

We saw that last year against Federer in Auzie, but his head is a HUGE problem

and nadia is like that, so, I would prefer has some problems in my game than my mind!

But lest take one match by the time.
Masha has still to pass from Dani
Lets not think in Nadia right now....

looking ahead...

Yes. Nadia is a very tough opponent, and she has been improving throughout the past year. She is strong, very fast and very consistent, and has one of the most powerful serves on tour. if they meet again, it will be a tough match for Masha.

Nadia's 2nd serve is a slight weakness, but overall her serve is quite hard to break, and Maria will need to be very consistent to force a break of serve and hold her own for each set. Hopefully maria will be up for it and healthy.
