View Full Version : What is the purpose of a bye? Why is it only in WTA tournaments?

Can someone please tell me the point of a bye. I really don't like them, it keeps players from points! But it exists for a reason, and I want to know, what for.

And why are they in every big WTA tournament, but not the ATP tournaments except a few.

the bye is an incentive for top players to play. The hectic schedule means that many top players are playing in finals on a Sunday in place x, and would ordinarily have to be playing a match on Tuesday in place y, possibly several thousand miles away. So that they can adjust to the new surroundings, they get a day off with a bye and play their first match on wednesday instead.

The ATP used to have byes until a few years ago I think, but that is not the case anymore.

The ATP tour is more grinding than the WTA tour.

Thanks! Even though the girls need the bye, I feel bad to say that I favor the methods of the ATP Tour, although I hate their two ranking systems. Fair.

I think byes should, on the whole, be scrapped. If women want equal parity with men, this is something else that damages the argument. And why should top players have to win only four matches to win a tournament and lower ranked players five? It maintains the status quo and limits the risk of upsets and huge ranking point gains.

If this became a big debate, I would choose not to take a side and just be silent arbiter because byes annoy me yet they are good for the players I am sure. But you are right, with that constant, always resurrected battle of the sexes debate, what you have said makes me sympathize more with the men!

Well bye is good for tournament because they can attract top players. I think comparing with men tour is pointless because men generally dun go to semis and final week in week out but they still get much higher prize money

I see what youŽre both saying, but I just think that if I was some girl ranked 60-something but capable of beating the top ten players, IŽd find it really unfair that they had to win less matches than me to win the same tournament.
