View Full Version : Venus Losing After Winning the 1st Set

May 6th, 2002, 06:02 PM
Monica, Sandrine now Kim. I think she was injured in all three of these but she can't really talk about it because people don't want to hear it and a lot of people want her to lose.

Didn't see the Kim and Sandrine matches yet, but it was obvious that Monica was playing good, but Venus couldn't run into the corners to get Monica's angles. At least Venus went down in 3 sets and didn't talk about injuries too much as her nonfans expected.

but maybe Venus is injured but then aren't many players playing through pain in lot's of matches and still won, is Venus is not complaining about it, I dun see why their fans should that's all

She won the first set 6-1 against kim and sandrine so it just seems odd that she would lose. I think she won a set 6-1 against Lindsay a few years ago in OZ also. But then again Steffi would be up a set sometimes and then lose to players like Gaby. Kim said herself that Venus let her back in by making errors. Somebody started a thread about "Kim surely whipping Venus" so this is to give another spin on that.

Okay, I just don't want to see it blows up to another big arguement, the Kim whip venus thread is just stupid.

But you should be glad that when Venus lose people celebrate, that is not against venus, it just shows that Venus is the player to beat. I mean a bit like in early 90s when beating Monica or Steffi is like a very rare occasion.

I think Monica Kim and sandrine both deserve their victory. I mean talk about being sick or injred, Monica had a fever on that day as well and Kim has just come back from an injury, but then who really cares!!! they are professional, they know what limit they can take.

About UEs letting Kim back into the game, it is very rare for a player to play an perfect set let alone two in a row, so you can't blame Kim for winning because Venus is putting more UEs than the first set.

Hi :wavey:

I saw the match yesterday and Venus wasn't injured at all....she was running like never before in the second and third set...trying to catch every ball and she never struggled to run or she didn't hurt herself during the match...

Kim was the better player...she dominated the rallies and made Venus run during the last two sets :)

It happened before you know....sometimes players win the first set but still lose the match  ;) :p

Venus isn't perfect....she CAN LOSE...even when not injured...

Kim was the better player on that particular day! She beat Venus. Venus admitted that Kim played well. Kim said that Venus also played well. If Venus is still suffering from an ankle injury, she sure didn't show it. Kim just kicked up her game a notch! Kim won, Venus lost! Venus continues to improve on her clay court game. On to the next tournament!:wavey:

It was a good match.I am sure both players were feeling the affects of an injury, but the fact is Kim won. Venus did not give away the match.Kim won it.Kim started to play smarter tennis in the 2nd and 3rd sets.It was a close match. Not decided by UE but by playing smart tennis. It was a good match between two very hard hitters. Kim was just too good for Venus in the final.Regardless of who was injured and who wasn't .Steffi may have lost some matches when winning the 1st set,but she played through most of her injuries, winning or losing, but never using the excuse of an injury. If Venus was injured in yesterdays match, she didn't show it.I watched the match twice.Kim was just too good for her .Well played match.Had nothing to do with either one being injured. :)

I am sure Venus will take this loss as a lesson of what else she needs to work on .She can play on any surface, including clay.Showing all, she is a clay court player too.:D

 OMG! QL has returned. I thought you were banned for life!;) Venus was injured during her QF match, but she worked through it and reached the final where she played well, but lost to Kim. What's the big deal? Venus proved that she can play on any surface. :D

venus proves in 99 that lady plays good with clay surfaces--two titles 99 wif wins over good ladys like martia, mary..no reasons why venus lady must prove time after time--adept on clay surgace--we seen this many times over

I know Debbie Foy, in 1999 when she won both Hamburg and Rome, I was so sure she would win the French. I was so dissapointed when she crashed out in the Quarters.

crash out to barbra shwartz in fourth round after match points at rolands garrods that year i think--calamity for venus--but not takes away from good titles on the clay courts over elite players--lady has proven clay abilities....or shwartz beets her in quarters--cannot remember.....

Well to me it is always about how Venus is serving. If Venus serves well she is almost impossible to defeat. If she cannot get her lst serve in then that puts her on the defense. A great defense by the way, but much more wear and tear on her physically. Don't really know what happened to her second serve, I remember when it was in the 90's. Plus she had a real nice slice that went way wide. In tennis today you have to own a good second serve, not even Serena can survive on giving an aggressive opponent a constant diet of those. It is simple as that, catch Venus when she is serving well, and you are dead meat. Catch her when she is serving poorly you have a chance. Even then not a good chance. :) :)

P.S. Overall Vee has not served well for most of the year. Serena wins with her serve while Venus has been winning in spite of hers.

Hi Venus :wavey:

Hi Serena :wavey:

Hi Daniela :wavey:

The serving aspect is a good one. If Venus is serving well then she will be tough to beat. I think Venus did not serve her best and Kim served good as far as I have read so congrats to Kim. Maybe this is good for Venus to lose now and win at a bigger event.

I do think that Venus was injured during her matches against Monica and Sandrine, but not Kim. Whether or not injury would've alter the result of any of these matches, I don't know. We could also make the case that Martina might have been injured during her match with Venus.

Injuries are what they are, and they may or may not affect the outcome of matches.

May 6th, 2002, 10:29 PM
yea especially since the news is that Martina is having a foot operation.

Maybe Venus just isn't fit enough ???

her body seems injury-prone. Another top player who was also was Steffi Graf and people did not like it if she said she was having problems from an injury as they dont like it if Venus says this. They said Steffi was lining up her excuse if she lost especially if it was at a Grand Slam.
