View Full Version : Are you a player or a non-player?

May 6th, 2002, 02:33 PM
I was wondering how many posters on this board actually play tennis themselves. You may add some comments like your current, local ranking, beginner/advanced player or you are in another way related to the game... (trainer, coach, umpire, maintenance worker , 'aprŔs'-tennis specialist :), ... )
Non-players definitely have to answer why they DON'T play this fine game. :)

I play tennis and my ranking is currently C30-4. That is almost the lowest ranking you can get in Belgium but I must add I was a better player two years ago, being a C30 and right now Im working on a come back defeating all players in my category. That should be no difficult since I have more than 20 years of experience in my pocket (yesyes I know, Im a dinosaur) and Im mostly up against beginners or youngsters who are wrestling with a hangover, afflicted to themselves the night before... ;)

I'm not a player because I live the middle of bloody no where, and the only sports areas are about 7 cricket grounds ... which you can't play tennis on (I've tried :p) I play at school at lunch time, but it takes time to get home afterwards, so I can't play after school.

So I watch it on TV, and give professionals tips on what they should do

I play tennis :)
I started playing last year and I love it!
I think it's the best sport ever

May 6th, 2002, 03:26 PM
Messed around and played a little in the street when I was a kid. Now I've joined USTA League tennis and we start in about 2 weeks. I'm only a 2.5 but have improved since I started a few months ago. :)

I'm surprised no one has already done this poll.

I've played for 13 years, since I was 9 years old.
(Oh, just gave away my age.....hehehehe.....22 was it....hehehe ;) )

The best, and only sport I'll probably ever play competitively. :)

ive played heaps of sports on and off competitively inc. tennis, soccer, basketball and more..
so never really 'specialised' to become good in any in particular like 'AURA' would be ,with 13 years !

but tennis is definately my fave even if i can't play too well these days ;)

I just started taking tennis lessons. In high school I did other sports, at Uni, I simply didn't have time to do sports. Now's the first year I have time to do more sports, tennis seemed an obvious choice.

May 6th, 2002, 04:16 PM
I play recretional tennis regularly, at least once a week.
I started play tennis 5 years ago, but only the last 3 years that I start to play regularly.

This is the best sport IMO :)

May 6th, 2002, 04:19 PM
I used to play USTA juniors. Now I just play for fun when I have time.

May 6th, 2002, 04:29 PM
non player here :)

May 6th, 2002, 04:35 PM
I've been playing tennis for about 3 years now and Im still crap at it so I play it socially and at school and I have lessons during lunchtime and after school but Im joining a proper club soon! :)

May 6th, 2002, 04:40 PM
I┤m playing tennis since Im 7. I played some junior tournies in Austria and was sometimes around the top 40 in Austrian junior ranking but than I started skiing and both was too expensive
Now Im 19 and I think it would be too late to start again
I once played Jurgen Melzer anyone know? He was junior winner at wimbledon 3 years ago, but lost 06 36 :o

May 6th, 2002, 05:17 PM
Well, I play tennis everyweek, but not pro:wavey:

May 6th, 2002, 05:32 PM
I play tennis at the RTC Ath in Belgium. I like it very much, I'm NC (I've got no ranking) but I'm gonna make my entry on the tour (not the professional one, but the regional ;) ) in the summer so I hope I'll have some good results!!!

May 6th, 2002, 05:40 PM
well i┤m a player. i played when i was a kid. i returned the last year to play, since 1993. i played a local tournamnt and later had a knee injury. this year i returned some days ago, ┤cause i had a terrible injury playing in january, i returned and i didn┤t loss a set in my 4 matchs :D . I want practice┤cause in the second part of the year i want play the university tournamnt and the interclubs tournamnts, but i need 20 years and i┤m 19 pfffffffffff:(

I just LOVE the cute Seles avatar Argentino:)

I've been obsessed with tennis ever since I saw Wimbledon in 1977. I've played every chance I can since then. I'm a 4.5/4.0 on the US scale. It's a sport for a lifetime and I'll never give it up, even when I'm an old Rollo-pollo

May 6th, 2002, 06:11 PM
I used to play regularly at the club near me, but I wasn't very good. I took up pole vaulting instead, which gave me less time to play tennis, and now I only play about once a month.

Needless to say, I'm now really crap.

In the summer I play more often because my friends are more willing to get their arses onto a tennis court when it's sunny.:)

May 6th, 2002, 07:31 PM
Once USTA starts I will be playing 3 matches a week, plus drilling twice a week!:bounce:

I play at least 2 times a week, all year round. I love this game! What can I say,I love to eat food. Anything I want! Just have to play some tennis the next day. Keeps me very fit, since I don't like to excersize.

Plus it is a sport of all ages.My 3 year old gets mad, if he doesn't get some court time too, when I go play.:D

May 6th, 2002, 10:17 PM
Because I'm from the country i never got the opportunity to join a local tennis club but i used to play on a public court in the
town nearby sometimes. Now that i'm at uni the tennis club here is crap so i barely ever go cos i'm always dumped with the beginners. When i start work this year i hope to join a proper tennis club and get lessons.

Thx to all voters and for your responds as well!

Though 42 votes so far is not much. I wonder if this number is a valid representative sample,(out of thousands of members).

Some bright mathematician in here? :wavey:

im a playa ;)

May 7th, 2002, 03:23 AM
I love to play tennis!!

May 7th, 2002, 03:46 AM
I voted for non player... i play occasionally with a friend but we just rally or something, it's not serious... I don't take lessons and I don't play on a team or anything... and I suck lol so I voted non player!

May 7th, 2002, 03:56 AM
I've been playing for about 4 years. I try to play or practice at least twice a week, but I don't get much of an opportunity to play during the winter.

May 10th, 2002, 03:42 PM
I've been playing for many years now, I try to play every day and I also sometimes help my coach train little kids.
Last week I won a tournament :bounce:. It was in Turkey but it's of the Russian Tennis Tour

May 10th, 2002, 04:05 PM
Horrible, lousy, hopeless, still a player.
And i love to play!!!

May 10th, 2002, 04:13 PM
I've been playing tennis for 4 years. Sometimes not as often as I would like, but I try to play whenever I can. I usually play at recreational parks, the school campus, or just againts the wall. I'm not sure about where I stand, but my coach last year said I was between a 3.0-3.5 player which is average.

May 10th, 2002, 04:17 PM
a player, but not a good one! I'm C30/4, that's one rank above being not in the ranks at all! lol But I hope to be at least C30/2 (1 rank higher) or C30 (2 ranks higher) at the end of the season :)
At this moment i already have enough points to be C30/2 so I hope/think C30 is possible!

May 18th, 2002, 09:40 PM
I would love to play every day but unfortunatly that is not possible.
This year I finally entered a tennisclub and I also take lessons.
Some months ago I played my first tournament and I lost 6-0, 6-3
I hadn't played on gravel for two years so hopefully next time better.
Tennis is the best sport there is. I'm really obsessed of it.

May 18th, 2002, 11:08 PM
Well, I┤ve played tennis all my life.
When I was younger (13 or 14 years old) I had to decide: to be a pro-tennis player or to be an engineer. I decided to be an engineer.

I loved tennis, i love it now and i┤ll love tennis always.

Anybody from Spain??

May 18th, 2002, 11:10 PM
I started back to tennis about 2 years ago. I used to play when I was a kid. My first racquet was a wooden "Miss Chris" racquet. (yes, I'm old)
I'm hopefully going to join a USTA league this year. I haven't received any ranking yet. I'm taking Intermediate classes which end next week and then I'll start taking doubles strategies & singles strategies classes.

Someone asked how the US ranking system works:

USTA Ratings: (this is taken from Tennis for Dummies)
1.0 Stone cold Beginner
1.5 Beginner that can keep the ball in play
2.0 Your ok, have some problems w/groundstrokes
2.5 You can hit short rallies
3.0 Fairly consistent medium-paced shots but still not so good w/ placement
3.5 Place shots good, but no variety yet.
4.0 You reliably hit all your shots and vary your shots strategically.
5.0 You reliably hit all your shots and vary your shots strategically, hit regular winners and force your opponent to make unforced errors.
6.0 You have obtained a USTA sectional and/or national ranking
6.5 You have extensive satellite tourney experience
7.0 You make a living from tournament prize $$.
