with so beautiful and killing forehand  with a jump like an axel in figure skating  ,
with a slice backhand, hitting so low with such spin and consistency
with so much speed and quickness
with so high ball toss on her serve

I remember the first time I saw here was in San Diego in 1998 when she was just coming back. The first thing I thought was OH MY GOD those LEGS! Her calves were absolutely amazing. She had beautiful hair too. I got her autograph on a can on tennis balls I bought at Wimbledon. I told her how much I had enjoyed watching her over the years and how great it was to have her back and she said "Thank you" and then said she had to get to practice... I got a front row seat to that practice session. A well known fact is that her practice sessions were INTENSE. It was like she was playing a match. Her and Heinz would hit that ball back and forth so hard. She used her topspin backhand in practice a lot but hardly ever in matches! She had a night match t about 7 so about 6 she came out and practiced on stadium court. As she left I told her good luck and she said thanks again.

That night she defeated Julie Halard Decugis easily and unfortunately she lost the next day to Ai Sugiyama.

The next time I saw her was at Indian Wells. I saw her defeat Ai Sugiyama in about 40 mins. and got her autograph several times on some pictures and a poster. I then saw her play doubles and play and CRUSH Jana Novotna the next day. I can remember after that match she practiced on stadium court because it was the last match of the day and she was SO excited that she had beaten Jana so easily.... I then saw her eek out a match against Chanda Rubin in the SF's.. I got so close to her several times and she was always very nice and always signed autographs but never a normal sized tennis ball!

I saw her again the next year in SD right after she lost in the finals of WImby. Little did I know I would be at her last practice session and last match EVER! I got her autograph AGAIN! And told her how sorry I was that she had lost and she kinda just smiled back. I really feel that if she would have won Wimby she would have continued a little bit more but the loss took EVERYTHING out of her. I also had met Heidi, STeffi's mom online via AOL so I got to meet Heidi to and told her thanks for keeping us Steffi fans updated!

I miss Steffi a lot mainly because of her class and dignity but also her consistency. I love the Williams' but I get sick sometimes of them missing easy shots repeatedly and their "injuries" that continually force them out of events. All I can say is that if Steffi had only played when she was 100 percent she would have completed about 8 matches her entire career!

Thanx a lot for sharing your experiences Justin.

I've heard just so much about how well Stef played during practice- wish I could have had the chance to see her practice.

Just on Saturday, I was watching the semi-final match of the 99 French Open, and the commentators (I don't remember their names) said that they hadn't seen any player with the kind of work ethics like Stefii has, even they were all praise for how intense she was during her prac sessions.

Even Vijay Amritraj always spoke of this....he even spoke about how during the 99 Wimbledon, Andre and Kiefer stopped their own practice session for a few minutes to just watch Stef practice.

how may times did I write the P word ;)

he didn't andre have other interests?;)
justin you were so lucky to have seen steffi's last match, I will never forget that night when I went around the internet to look for steffi's score and then she had given up

lol Irma, while writing the post, the exact same thing came to my mind!

May 23rd, 2002, 06:31 PM
She was, is and will be the BEST TENNIS-PLAYER EVER.

Beside her terrific results it is her character that made the years from '82 to '99 my most intensive ones to feel with a person ...
Even in bad times like in '93 and '97 (e.g. AO) I never doubted the comeback of her personality.

She is the white unicorn of tennis ...

My heart's still missing her the same way it did on Aug 14th 99.

:hearts: S:hearts: T:hearts: E:hearts: F:hearts: F:hearts: I:hearts:  :hearts: F:hearts: O:hearts: R:hearts: E:hearts: V:hearts: E:hearts: R:hearts: !

... thanks for your shared moments, JustinSteffi

That was taken from JCAP's FO interview today:

Q. Can you make a comparison between playing against players like Steffi Graf and Navratilova and Seles when you're a teenager and playing against the Williams sisters today in terms of power and speed?

JENNIFER CAPRIATI: Well, I never really played against Navratilova that much, so I can't comment on her. But Steffi, she was one of the hardest hitters that I played against -- and not only hard-hitting, but the way she moved. It was just consistently -- I mean, every time you'd play against her, you know, "What's gonna come?" I mean, maybe the Williams sisters you really don't know. So it's hard to really compare. I mean, it's different. You know, I would have been -- Steffi would have been a very hard force, you know. If she would have been playing now, not retired quite yet, this would be her time.

Jun 2nd, 2002, 01:38 AM
My lord did she have a child? It sure doesn't look like it. ;)

Looks like Bud Collins is in the first picture. Does anyone know if he was able to interview her? Or if it was on TV?

Jun 5th, 2002, 07:16 PM
Don't know about any itvw. But I'm sure it's Bud.

Thanks saff76ar for this pic. I tried to find one like that (watching Andre def. Robredo) on nearly every site in the web. You made my day !!

After the birth of Jaden she lost weight - apparently a lot. Time for the next one, should be a daughter.

Please to all in here: send ger some birthday greetings on Fr June 14 on her HP or email her.
She should know how many fans still think of her every day and how many long for her play ...

Jun 11th, 2002, 07:45 PM
My pleasure, Steff_forever ;)

Here's another one.

I was at Steffi's last match as well as Justin :) It was really surreal. I told my friend after the match that Steffi would retire...that was it. You could see it in her eyes. Not just the match, but her practices before then...she looked liked she had no desire for the tennis anymore. The funny thing about her last match is that her last service game of her career, she served and volleyed practically every point, lol. FINALLY! Of course, it was because she had injured her hamstring and was trying to shorten the points, but she finally just shook her head and walked to the net and shook hands with Amy Frazier....then she was outta there. I think she might even have left that night.

Here's some photos from her last practice and last match:

And the infamous photo of Steffi in a cap...the only one I have EVER seen:
