Narnia movie topples Kong in US

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe has toppled King Kong to reclaim the top spot at the US box office.

The adaptation of CS Lewis' story took $32.8m (£18.9m) at the North American box office over the weekend and Monday, ending King Kong's two-week reign.

The Narnia movie also topped the international box office, taking $53.5m (£30.9m) outside the US in that time.

US box office takings for 2005 totalled $8.9bn (£5.1bn), down 5% from 2004, monitor Exhibitor Relations said. The number of movie tickets sold in the US in 2005 fell by 7% to their lowest level since 1997.

Jim Carrey comedy Fun With Dick and Jane took $21m (£12m) in North America over the holiday weekend, at number three in the box office chart.

Director Steven Spielberg's latest film Munich - about Israel's attempt to find Palestinian militants who killed 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympic Games - reached 10th place during its first week on limited release.

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, starring Tilda Swinton and James McAvoy, is the first of the Chronicles of Narnia series to be made into a big-budget feature film.

The Disney film follows the Pevensie children, who discover a wardrobe which is a gateway to the magical land of Narnia.

The movie has taken a total of $450.3m (£260m) at the global box office - including North America - since its release last month. In addition to its US success, the movie is currently number one in the UK, Australia, France, Germany and Russia among others.

I enjoyed The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe a zillion times more than I enjoyed King Kong. Not that Kong was crap or anything...

I was very dissapointed with Narnia and i'm suprised its doing as well as it is.

Haven't met many people who were dissapointed with it untill i saw Film 2005 with Jonathan Ross who was also dissapointed along with a few directors and writers in the industry.

Still haven't seen King Kong

The CGI is poop in places, that's the only part that disappointed me. King Kong I was expecting not to like and was suprised that I found the last hour quite enjoyable. However, the first 2 hours were boooooooooooooooring.

Really? I loved this adaptation of it. I mean if you are familiar with the story and have seen other versions of it, you pretty much already know what to expect.

But really, they did an outstanding job with Narnia. Tilda Swinton nearly steals the movie away with her performance as the White Witch. I think CS Lewis, who never wanted to see his stories on film, would have actually liked this.

As for King Kong, it was good and the scenes on Skull Island are pretty spectacular. But that is about all.

The beginning kind of drags and the ending is not bad but again like Narnia, we pretty much already know what to expect if your familiar with past films.

Narnia was a dreadful movie, if you are not a child. Spielberg“s production must be horrid then

But that's what Lucy and Susan do... stand around all day and say "Oh Aslan" over and over  I found the Susan in the movie a bit disappointing. From reading the book and seeing the BBC production I always thought Susan was a bit more kick-ass.
