Who is the fastest WTA player on foot?
Like if you were to line them up for a 100 metres race. I'm judging my opinion on how quick the players move around the court. The eight fastest who would qualify for the 100 metres final in any order are;

1. Justine Henin
2. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario
3. Venus Williams
4. Amanda Coetzer
5. Jelena Dokic
6. Serena Williams
7. Jennifer Capriati
8. Kim Clijsters.

The quickest out of the block (at the word 'Go") would be Amanda Coetzer. Her reactionary start is very fast. But she will be caught barely ten metres into the race by Venus Williams who with her long striding steps will dominate the fast half. Serena will suddenly burst into the front with her enegertic muscles and raw power and so will Henin. As they all come close to the tape breathing down each other's neck, the Williams sisters will be two strides ahead of four of the runners but it will be Arantxa Sanchez Vicario who will finish by a metre in front of the Williamses. Coetzer will suddenly re-apper and finish second. The Williams sisters will finish third and fourth in a photo finish with Serena claiming third position by a hair's breadth. Justine Henin will finish fifth, Capriati 6th, Clijsters 7th and Dokic 8th.

Results of the race Time (as recorded electronically)
1. Sanchez-Vicario Arantxa (ESP) 12.36sec
2. Coetzer Amanda (RSA) 12.47sec
3. Williams Serena (USA) 12. 58sec
4. Williams Venus (USA) 12. 59sec
5. Henin Justine (BEL) 12. 75sec
6. Capriati Jennifer (USA) 12.97sec
7. Clijsters Kim (BEL) 13.56sec
8. Dokic Jelena (YUG) 13.85sec

Do you guys agree with this scenario? Who should be in the final 8 and who shouldn't? Who would/should've win/won in your opinion???

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Anna K. pretty speedy herself. She does get to a lot of balls, even if she can't get them back.

How about Elena Dementieva. Even though her court movement isn't the best, she's very fast in a straight line. .

1. Venus
2. Justine
3. Jennifer
4. Serena

Serena could be #1, but she is not fit enough.
She has an explosive first step, probably better then Venus, but she gets tired fast. Venus on the other hand only gets faster. Justine is very fast also, and Jennifer runs like the Energizer Bunny(keeps going and going an dgoing at very top speeds). Amanda is very fit, but not the fastest, she can be out the whole they running, but not at the very fast speed, she is consistent thought in running, Martina is all about anticipation.

hehe lol at this thread:angel:

i would put my money on Amanda Coetzer fot the 100m. A lot of people say either of the Williams are the fastest. but those long legs really help and makes them look extremely fast. but still, that explains why their opponents can't make winners that easily on them. Arantxa is also speedy, i think she is perfect for distant races.

Without a freaking doubt..

VENUS and then Serena!!

Venus has long strides and is very fast .. she gets to alot of balls that I have NEVER seen anyone on the WTA tour do. Plus she has the long legs to add that extra OOMPFTH, when already heading for the tape.

She already has a good track record as a child. Venus would of been great in track.

Dokic is actually ver quick, she doesn't look as quick as Clijsters because Kim slides, so Jelena actually has to take an extra couple of steps every time she runs wide, taking up more energy.

you are talking about the 100 meter..then

1. Venus Williams
2. Serena Williams
3. Justine Henin
4. Jennifer Capriati
5. Kim Clijsters

if you are talking about moving on the court (that's no 100m ;))
1. Kim Clijsters
2. Venus Williams
3. Justine Henin
4. Jennifer Capriati
5. Anna Kournikova

Elena Dementieva would beat these lot hands down, i've seen her do around 12 secs

but she is better at longer distances.

If Steffi was here i'm sure she'd do around 11.5 or less

Serena was reported to have done an 11.8 in the 100 when she was 16. Venus was doing a 12.2 in the 100 around that age too.

I also think Anastasia Myskina would be in the top 5 - have you ever seen her run? She is lightning quick, and looks like a top athlete. I reckon Tatiana Panova must be pretty quick also.

I've got another race though - slowest on the tour.

1. Monica Seles (USA) - 25.51 sec
2. Sandrine Testud(Fra) - 25.62 sec
3. Lindsay Davenport (USA) - 29.01 sec
4. Mary Pierce (Fra) - 30.98 sec
5. Rita Kuti Kis (Hun) - 33.76 sec
6. Iva Majoli (Cro) - 34.78 sec

8. Emelie Loit (Fra) - 40.23 sec
9. Alexandra Stevenson (USA) - 56.83 sec

imo Venus is #1 with Serena closley behind at #2.

Serena gets to an incredible number of balls, alot of those I can't think of anyone who would get to those except Venus. Serena is much faster than Capriati that's one of the reasons why Jenifer has less winners when she plays her than Serena who has more winners on jen.

I forgot to mention Anastacia Myskina. How could I possibly forget that? She's very fast. I bet she's just as fast or may be faster than ASV and the Williams sisters. That girl is quick man. Her aggression reminds me of the Russian sprinter Irina Privalova. Similar tenacity. Privalova used to give the Americans (Gwen Torrence and Gail Devers) and (Jamaica's) Merlene Ottey a run for their money during the early nineties.

I also bet that Elena Dementieva would have made a very good challenger to the 100metres crown. She's a bit like Zhanna Pintusevich (Ukraine) who beat Marion Jones in last year's World Champs. 100m final. Dementieva is explosive and has this incredible fighting spirit in her. Lots of fire I think. I'm sorry I left these two athletes out of the top eight finalist. Well, let's just say that they were disqualified in the semi-finals; Dementieva for two false starts and Myskina for running out of her lane despite winning her semi ahead of Sanchez-Vicario.

speed is no substitute for knowing what to do with the ball when you get there.

all the girls are very fast. and anticipation is part of that.

Why shuld a tennisplayer run 100 meters? It is far to far. Reaktion and ability to read the next ball are more essencial.

Hahaha!! This is quite kool :)

I think Serena/Venus today are the best sprinters, whilst Jennifer would be the best long distance runner!

I'm glad you mentioned ASV, although Steffi was a great athlete, Arantxa really raised the bar for speed on the court and essentially got balls back that most others could never get :)

J_Migoe
May 11th, 2002, 12:26 AM
I don't think Venus would have made an excellent sprinter. She would be more deadly in the 400metres. Lucky she wasn't interested in athletics otherwise, Cathy Freeman would not have won the 400 metre gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.:wavey: :wavey: :wavey:

This is a joke right? Everyone from coaches to announcers to reporters know that Venus and Serena have the fastest court coverage on the tour. How many matches have you watched when they say over and over and over that venus and serena get back balls no other player could? Its like a broken record they say it so much.

Just like jennifer has the best forehand venus is the fastest.

May 11th, 2002, 04:21 AM
it would be kim... followed by venus and then amanda came third.. serena would be the forth cause.. she's exhausted after 75m sprint.. and then anna coming out from nowhere (outside the field) hehehe became the fifth... jelena almost reached the finish lane but jen pulled her hair and then BANG.. ouch.. jen the sixth and justine the seventh.. aranxta came the last.. (she's old) and jelena didn't finish the match.. hahha .. no offence..

1. Kim 12.27
2. Venus 12.38
3. Amanda 12.41
4. Serena 12.47
5. Anna 12.53
6. Jen 13.01
7. Henin 13.11
8. ASV 19.53
9. Jelena (not finished)

I think that you've got the wrong Anna on the list....Anna Smashnova is renowned for her court speed and although she probably won't do too much damage to Serena tomorrow, I am still looking forward to watching the match. AnnaK is definitely speedy, but AnnaS has been the talk of the tour this season as the new Aranxta/Amanda style player of this year. I have only seen her once on TV a few years ago, but she'll be on ESPN tomorrow and I can't wait!!! Good Luck Smashi and congrats on a GREAT tournament result!!!

Steffi's speed is without a doubt unparalleled and a huge part of what made her such a great champion. I always loved her ability to let a shot go and start moving immediately for the next ball.

USE YOUR HEADS PEOPLE!

I believe the question was, "Who is the fastest player on foot.", right. Basically like it was stated from the beginning, who will when in an all out sprint of the 100 meter dash. Well if you examine the players and the abilites and power, you would have to go with Serena Williams. She is the most explosive player there is. Being a track person you would understand that in order to run a perfect 100 you would have to cover all of the steps to win. And Serena does that more than everyone, yes even than her sisters Venus! Let me put it to you like this. Serena's first step is extremely explosive, WAY better than the rest of the field! So when the gun goes off she will be ahead already. Now remember that this race is only a 100, you have to take this to mind, in a 100 meter dash the stride does not matter (in the case of Venus Williams). With Venus and Serena in this race, Serena will blow the field away. And Venus will get second b/c of her Speed AND stride. Becaus Serena is so strong and powerful you often see her run down balls that are extremely out of reach and far away.

A player like Justine, and Clijsters, they do not do that, what she does is anticpate well, which gives them a head start on where the ball is headed. They can stay with where they person is running them all over the place at. But they doesn't explode out to those balls that a player may hit like off a second serve. Amanda Coetzer? Lets just say she is the twin of Justine and Clijsters. But not as strong. A lot of anticipation and a lot of little steps.

Now to talk about Venus and where she would be. Venus is fast, but is she faster than her sister? In the 100 she will get blown away, BUT say you throw them both in a 200. This is where venus will have the upper hand. Really in the 200 and the 400(one lap around the track). Venus will get the upper hand b/c of her stride. Even though serena will get out infront of her from the starting blocks once venus gets on the curve of the 200 she will have caught up w/ serena, and that stride of her's will make Serena history.

You have to realize, you can call a player fast, but you really have to look at the situation! Are they FAST, or do they just anticpate where the ball is going, and they have a little speed thus will get them to the ball and claiming that they are fast.

Right now Venus and Serena are the fastest on the tour. Serena number 1 and Venus number 2. Take a look at their builds. As you can see by the Olympics or the USA Track and Field. The sprinters are mainly or well 98% African American. As African American's we are known for our speed. We are extremely fast. Note that i said African AMERICAN, beacause them PURE AFRICANS, straight out of Africa, they have everyone beat in the long distance!!:D :D

I think Lindsay would definitely win this one. Her knees don't bend!!Even Monica is faster than Lindsay.

I've seen Monica play in Paris in 1992 before the Hamburg incident and she was damn quick. She gets to every ball and her footwork was excellent. She demoralized Steffi in a matter of two years after joining the tour. Steffi was also quick but seems to be helpless against a player who hits on the rise.

But when she returned in 1995, she was unfit and overweight which slowed her down on the tennis courts.
