U.S. to Face Israel in Fed Cup

LONDON (AP) - The United States, eliminated in the first round of the Fed Cup by Austria, will play Israel this summer for a place in next year's World Group.

The Americans will have home advantage for the July 20-21 playoffs, one of eight ties drawn Friday by the International Tennis Federation.

The United States, a 17-time Fed Cup winner, was ousted 3-2 by Austria last weekend in Charlotte, N.C. The defeat came after captain Billie Jean King kicked Jennifer Capriati off the team for practicing with her own coach.

In other playoff matches, Australia, eliminated by defending champion Belgium, was drawn to play at home against the Netherlands, while Sweden will host Switzerland.

The other ties: Hungary vs. Argentina, Czech Republic vs. Canada, Colombia vs. Japan, China vs. Russia and Slovenia vs. Ukraine.

The matches will be played on the same weekend as the World Group quarterfinals.

Playoff winners will secure spots in the 2003 World Group, while losers will go into the regional qualifying groups.

  grrr...i didnt want this to happen! now i dont know who to route for! :fiery:

Hmmm, I know which Israeli player I would like to see win her matches though.

Curious who the teams will consist of. Just around the corner.

If Jenny will play, my two biggest faves will play head-2-head!!!

NO!!!!!! ill just be REALLY patriotic & root fot Israel!!!

Go Anna! Tzipora! Hila! Shachar!

May 30th, 2002, 03:40 PM
you think Shahar will play? I think she's too young to be there. do you know how tall she is? she's so talented, and such a fighter, I think she can really do well if she's tall enough.
and don't worry, I doubt Jen will play. maybe Lindsay will play! I wouldn't have any problem though. in fed cup you support your country. in everything else I support Lindsay:-).
but why is it automaticly in the states:( . they should have atleast discussed coming here!

Jun 5th, 2002, 04:04 PM

Jun 6th, 2002, 12:40 AM
Great avatar Martyfan.

I don't have to root for all U.S. players if they are not worthy of me rooting for them IMO. There are some I just don't care for because of their arrogance. :D :wavey:

It will depend on who will be playing. ;)

Jun 7th, 2002, 03:11 AM
hey nogah :wavey: haven't heard from ya in a while

umm...im actually american which is why i'd probably route for the united states. but in americans i don't like's matches, im a little confused.

Jun 7th, 2002, 03:54 AM
I would LOVE it if Lindsay and Monica played for the U.S.. There are other players I would like to play for us but they probably wouldn't get picked because of their ranking. :(

Jun 11th, 2002, 02:50 AM
Don't be such a coward Irish... name NAMES. :p

Jun 11th, 2002, 10:36 PM

Jun 14th, 2002, 12:43 AM
Sonja, you are so lucky. I wish it was Springfield, Florida...10 minutes from me.

Jun 17th, 2002, 05:50 PM
Front row seats are $180 - Yikes, but I now have mine :D

I agree; I'm incredibly lucky. It's about time we have some tennis venues here!! Perhaps if we host well they'll consider doing more.

She will be on the squad. she is 1.71, not a shortie. her only Fed Cup match was w/Rosen in doubles, which she win something easy like 6-3 6-3

Welcome back Lindsay!!! :D

I expect the Americans to make amends for their loathful performance against Austria and kick some you know what. ;)

Security to be tight - metal detectors and baggage screening, just like at the airport. The whole complex is closed and in lock-down this week to be checked by security.

It might be a bit of a hassle, but better safe than sorry.

Jul 15th, 2002, 05:56 PM
Have fun Sonja!

Looking forward to your daily reports. ;)

Jul 16th, 2002, 07:44 PM
what ana talks about?
tell me sonja

King Aaron
Jul 17th, 2002, 11:22 AM
:D do you know if there is a transcript of the interview ??

Jul 17th, 2002, 03:11 PM
It was a five minute interview and I looked on my local station's web site but I found nothing.

Basically, the coach of the Israel team said he doesn't know how well they can do as the US Team consists of top players and are a very formidable force. He then went on to say that he was surprised at the choice of locations but that it was good for Springfield, MO.

Then came Anna who said the Israel team has as good a chance as anyone. She said the game starts out with both players at love so it's up to the players from that point on. She then talked a little bit about getting used to the courts and the weather.

She just appeared to me as being positive, upbeat, and likeable.

Go girsl go

Lindsay, Monica, Meghann, and Lisa

Jul 18th, 2002, 02:29 PM
Can anyone please tell me when Monica is playing? Is she playing a fed cup match this week???

Jul 18th, 2002, 05:08 PM
Yes, she will playing Fed Cup on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21.

Jul 18th, 2002, 05:09 PM
m!ssundaztooD I hope so!!

Send me e-mail or p-mail if you want.

Jul 18th, 2002, 05:29 PM
USA all the WAY... man if only V&S were playing...

Jul 18th, 2002, 06:14 PM

Why have they picked Meghann over Chanda?

Chanda is in great form singles and doubles

Meghann has been horrible all year! This is a bad decision!

Jul 18th, 2002, 07:03 PM
The USA goes down the list according to rank.

Jul 18th, 2002, 07:03 PM
I think, I read that is some article.

Jul 19th, 2002, 12:58 AM
Is it just me or does the Israeli team look eerily like like the Austrian team.

On paper, we should kick the crap out Israel, just like against Israel. Both teams have one player that SHOULDN'T beat the likes of Seles and Davenport, but are capable of doing it if they are on, and Monica and Lindsay are off (Smashnova and Schwartz) Then they have one other competent singles player who can remain semi-competitive with the US, but won't do any damage (Obziler and Fauth). And then they just have a crap doubles team. (Peer/Rosen, Kix/Maruska). I think the US could pull this out, but for some reason I think Smashnova is going to leave a big impression on Missouri!

King Aaron
Jul 19th, 2002, 11:36 AM
Yeah Anna !!!

Jul 19th, 2002, 11:50 AM
As if USA will win 5-0!

Jul 19th, 2002, 01:05 PM
I think I would have preferred Chanda over Meghann but I am still hoping for a USA win but I think it will tight as Lindsay is only just coming back from injury. Hopefully Monica will be on song!

First of all Sonja...tahnks ahead of time for your reports. Much appreciated! Secondly, was just curious about something. Is it a relatively small venue; so your tickets good ones, and were they expensive?

$180 ...for front row!

Jul 20th, 2002, 06:29 PM
Sonja just called me and told me that NO CAMERAS are allowed in!

So she apologizes for no photos

They're allowing tiny cameras in. Tomorrow she'll bring a small one with her and hopefully take some good photos.

Jul 20th, 2002, 07:08 PM
Drats...

Damn terrorists! :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Jul 20th, 2002, 11:40 PM
Get all the way up to the gate, through the metal detectors, they search my camera bag and tell me my camera is too big. It was not posted anywhere that only "certain sized" cameras would be allowed. It just said no video cameras. So had to take it back to the car and then stand in line to get in AGAIN!

Also NO access to the players whatsoever so no chance of autographs   I'm dead tired and I've been toasted by the sun. It was 90 degrees here with high humidity. Lindsay had it the worst, as she played first. Monica had the sun for a bit and then mercifully we got cloud cover.

Lindsay was wearing the white nike outfit Amelie and Daniela wore at Wimby and she is thin thin thin. She looked absolutely fantastic!!

Monica wore a white sleeveless top and a sky blue skirt. She also looked great.

Anna wore a white shirt that resembled the one Lindsay had on, only it wasn't white. She also had a white skirt. It looked very good on her.

Tzipora wore a white t-shirt and a powder blue skirt. She is very trim and the blue suited her.

More later, I'm off to the shower and to rest a bit.

Jul 21st, 2002, 01:07 AM
Sorry those M...... F...... terrorists tried to ruin your day and you had to wait in line twice! And then... not be able to get close to the players! We should should burn anyone remotely close to a terrorist cell. That's right...even f....... close! I'm so sick of being politically correct while our world has been all f....... up by these bastards!

Again sorry Sonja, but do appreciate your effort and report. Hopefully overall, it was a good day and you enjoyed yourself, albeit tempered by... those S.O.B.'s

:fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: :fiery:

Jul 21st, 2002, 01:37 AM
Sonja, thank you for your reports and attempts to get pictures. That is too bad that they have to be so strict with everything and only hope all goes well for everybody.

I know you have been looking forward to this so I hope you have a good time. Sad you can't get close to the players.

Go Anna!!!!:D

I tried to see the label yesterday, but I couldn't quite make it out. I've measured my camera and lens so it should get through today *keep your fingers crossed*. Hopefully that well help me determine what she's wearing and give me some half decent photos.

Thanx Sonja :D :D you're the best !! :D

Jul 22nd, 2002, 02:21 PM

The comments like yours, are the ones that create hate which creates terrorism. You should first think about why we have terrorism at all, before you came with the statements of burning everything even close to as you say "terrorist cell".

It is a shame Sonja that you could not come close to the players.
I am big fan of Monica too.
