I'm just wondering what people here think are the best cover versions, if there is such a thing seeming that most cover versions just ruin the original song  :o Anyway, I've just recently come across Mary J. Blige's cover/duet of U2's "One". It is really spine-tingling stuff. On paper it looks like Bono and Mary singing together shouldn't work coz their styles are so differant but this version just blew me away. I think they performed it together at Live 8 during the summer. I highly recommend everyone to check it out ;)

The Spinners - "Cupid" and "Working My Way Back to You Babe"
With all due respect to Sam Cooke and The Four Seasons.
IMO the best cover of them all is Joe Cocker - "With A Little Help From My Friends".
When I was a kid in the 70s they used to do Disco versions of every song you could think of...I liked that cheesey stuff. :o
I also like when anyone remakes a Bob Dylan tune into an upbeat rocker with pleasant vocals (Byrds, Sonny and Cher, Turtles, etc.)

Then again she does quite a few covers, particularly in her live shows, she's done an amazing version of Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These) and also the Kylie song Can't Get You Out Of My Head. "Frozen" by Madonna -- just kidding!
Most of the times, the original is the best, but there are quite a few times that I find the cover better (Herb Alpert's versions of "This Guy's in Love With You", "Taste of Honey" and "Last Tango in Paris" come to mind, as well as "Please Mr. Postman" by The Carpenters).
Not sure if this is strictly speaking a cover because although Prince wrote it I'm not sure if he released it before or after she did. Prince's version with Rosie Gaines is also excellent.

Though there are probably people who think I should go to prison for this, I think Linda Ronstadt's cover of "Crazy" is better than the original. Her cover of "Desperado" is definitely better than the original.
Other covers I think are really, really good:
Baby It's You--A Group Called Smith
I Heard It Through the Grapevine--Gladys Knight & the Pips
Roll Over Beethoven--The Beatles
Land of a Thousand Dances--Patti Smith
Respect--Aretha Franklin
I Drove All Night--Cindy Lauper
Ain't Too Proud to Beg--The Rolling Stones
Nothing Compares 2U--Sinead O'Connor
Proud Mary--Ike & Tina Turner
Love Will Never Do Without You--Macy Gray (I don't know if she recorded it)
After the Gold Rush--Natalie Merchant

No, just to the mental hospital. ("Worst pun ever.")
Actually, I don't like both versions, really (Willie Nelson's and Ronstadt's). I do like Patsy Cline's version for some reason (probably because it doesn't sound so "country").
