View Full Version : What Hingis said about Arantxa and Conchita

May 5th, 2002, 06:03 PM
There was an interview with her in WELT AM SONNTAG today where she was asked about how hard it is for her to realize how long she hasnīt won a Grand Slam and stuff, I believe that the question also implied how hard it is for her to lose against powerplayers and being regarded as the underdog

And Martina said that she still regards herself as a top player and she thinks she wonīt play any longer as soon as she is in the position she nowadays thinks Arantxa and Conchita are in, just to be in the second or even third league of players and that everybody thinks can beat you in your current form no matter what your past achievements were and how many Grand Slam titles you have won

I think it only underlines that though she is a nice person to talk to, to interview and stuff, she is indeed a girl that cannot accept being thrown from the throne.

Arantxa almost won against Venus 2 days ago, f.e.. I think that Martina each time argues she is still on top level denies the fact that she lost to powerplayers each time this year, except one, and that all her titles, apart from the ones she won against Seles were against those second league players whereas she herself each time lost to first league players

Now withdrawing from Berlin might be an injury reason, but often enough she just withdraws after lots and lots of pre-tournament interviews of strength and self-confidence and about beating the top and when losing she just withdraws or changes schedules to avoid new meeting with them

What I wanted to say is that she does no longer regard those 2 players as top players and that she only wants to play when she is the star and on top level

Isnīt it an achievement being Arantxa Sanchez and remaining on tour after legends like Sabatini, Fernandez and Graf are gone and she constantly tries to meet even hardhitters like Venus and still has a chance ?

I think when Arantxa uses those matches to forget her poor results in the beginning of the year, she is an example of coming back and meeting the top again

To say that once you lose to no-name players you leave because you are only on top of the charts pleased with yourself is the wrong attitude. Once they beat you you cannot stand the feeling and retire. Oh well.

Isnīt it an achievement to meet this challenge and fight your fate like Arantxa and Conchita try to come back ?

Definitely Martina will retire in a few years if she doesn't win some major tourneys or Grand slams soon. It doesn't sound like she was saying anything particularly bad about Arantxa and Conchita since it's basically true. I think you are right that Martina does not like not winning and probably will just retire rather than just fade away. Hopefully Arantxa and Conchita can come back but I am afraid their best days are really long gone.

Martina was the number 1 for so long! It would be weird if she would be happy with less!

I think its that whole retire/finish at the top thing. I honestly think it depends on the player. Fair enough if Martina wants to retire from the game in a couple of years, thats her choice and good luck to her.
As for Arantxa & Conchi, there has been much debate over whether they should go or not - its up to them at the end of the day, if they want to continue for the love of it or whatever, and no one can take away what they've achieved in the game. A bit cruel from Martina to use them as examples I suppose, but you can argue there is some truth (its sad to see them struggle sometimes and you always hope they will come back) although personally I believe that their longetivity is a great achievement alone.

Its only 13 months since she last lost to Arantxa!! Thats an arrogant comment - I think she already is in danger of slipping into the position that Arantxa and Conchita are in: i.e. canīt beat anyone ranked above her.

Let's count. The ones who think either ASV or Martinez will make it to the semis of RG, please raise your left hand. The ones who think Hingis will, please raise your right hand. It's good to be right!

JonBCn, thatīs DEFINETLY what I wanted to say :

She criticizes those who not only constantly lose to those ranked above them but nowadays behind them BUT she herself is in such a position as well nowadays with all matches against Venus, Jenn, Serena where she is the underdog and people donīt get too surprised to see her losing same as matches against Hantuchova in Indian Wells where she is the HEAVY favourite and loses as well ; Capriati, Venus or Serena wouldnīt lose such a match AT THIS POINT of time probably

Smygelfh, I DON`T think Martina will reach the Paris semis compared to Jenn, Venus, Serena, Monica, Kim or Justine - it will be interesting to see if she avoids a no5 seed as she will be confronted with the top4 in the quarterfinals already

And regarding the last one here :

I donīt know if this post had to do something with the incident in Hamburg 1993 and your anti-German attitude. It would make me very sad. I even thought about you the way I wrote the comment when pointing out that she won a couple of events against 2nd league players AND Monica which definetly is about the fact that a) Monica is an A-class player b) that Monica is one of my top4 favourites currently playing and that c) in no way I wanted to put in the way you understood my words. To once again using my nationality against me is definetly the wrong thing to do as I only wanted to underline that Martina has to demonstrate her class in a high-profile-final but not in a match against Shaughnesy when Serena retired in Sydney f.e..
I consequently wanted to EXCLUDE that Tokyo final against Seles from that 2nd league argument !!!

It seems like Martina only plays to win.

Conchita & Arantxa also play to get fun...

I'm sorry Chris. I didn't understand your post at first. But after I looked at it more closely I understood what you meant and deleted my own post.

Thanks. It makes you feel sad being misunderstood each time and especially when you tried to avoid mistakes you made last time !
