Patty will try and defend her title here. In the first round she'll play Virginie Razzano who she played and beat in the same round here last year. Good luck patty :)

Easy draw to the final. There she could play either Francesca Schiavone or Martina Hingis. I really hope it's Marti!

Good Luck Patty! And I agree-it would be great to see her play Martina.

Determined Schnyder to defend title
Women's world number seven Patty Schnyder says she is determined to defend her Australian Women's Hardcourt tennis title on the Gold Coast next week.

The 27-year-old Swiss could face her toughest challenge from Martina Hingis, who will play her first professional tournament in three years after returning from injury.

Schnyder said the Gold Coast tournament would be an ideal lead-up to next month's Australian Open in Melbourne.

"It's great, it's a really hot and humid spot so we are really ready for the dry heat in Melbourne," she said.

"I also love to come here because I practise indoors and it's kind of indoors here... I really love coming to this place."

Patty will be number SIX when the NEW rankings come out. The ones without quality points ;)

Anyway, Patty won 6-2, 7-6 and will play Angela Haynes, a qualifier, in the second round. GO PATTY :hearts: !

Patty has played GC for 10 straight years, and never lost in the 1st round except the first year ('97).

Guess who Patty played in the first two rounds last year? Razzano and Haynes.

Wouldn't that be 9 years Patty's played the GC then? ;)

I saw this on FOX sports website-

Earlier today, top seed and defending champion Patty Schnyder beat American qualifier Angela Haynes 6-3 6-0 to book a quarter-final date with the Czech Republic's emerging talent Lucie Safarova.

Good Luck to her in the next round!

97, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06.

That's 10 times. :) Since '99, her record at GC is 18-4.

Alright-I believe ya now ;)

I remember the first time hearing about Patty was when she bundled Iva Majoli out first round at the 97 Aus Open-Hard to believe it's almost 10 years ago now! :|

yup, Patty's heading into her 10th Aus Open - her 11th if you count 1996, when she lost in qualifying.

So Patty went out in straight sets-does anyone think this is a sign of things to come at the Oz Open?
