French President Jacques Chirac is facing a political backlash after reports he tried to alter the casting of The Da Vinci Code, promoting family friends for the lead roles. The World Is Not Enough star Sophie Marceau, 39, was allegedly touted by the French head of state to star as young cryptologist Sophie Neveu - the role ultimately won by Amelie actress Audrey Tautou, according to British newspaper The Times. Marceau, who is a close friend of Chirac's daughter Claude, was a staunch supporter of Chirac during his 2002 presidential campaign. The casting scandal was leaked by the film's director Ron Howard, who also revealed Chirac demanded higher pay for actor Jean Reno, who plays detective Bezu Fache in the adaptation of Dan Brown's bestselling novel. In return, the veteran politician offered to facilitate filming in Paris' historic Louvre museum. Howard says of the President's request, "That was hilarious. Fortunately, the deal was already closed." A spokesman for Chirac denied the allegations, but admitted that a meeting between Howard and the film's producer Brian Grazer had taken place

I'm just reading this book at the moment. I think Marceau would make a brilliant Neveu anyway.

Is Ron Howard a French hating Republican by any chance? :tape:

i just find it so absurd and strange for a president to have a say in the casting of a movie..

just do your job.....im sure he has his plate full.

Let the filmakers worry about casting and other issues

Perhaps it has something to do with the whole controversy surrounding the book. It's one of the bestsellers of all time, so it's possible he wants to make the film just as good. Though it's true that the movie-makers would have a far better idea of who to cast than a French president.

I was offered this book for my birthday... I know this is not original... Da Vinci being THE bestseller
Concerning this story with Chirac and friends : never heard about it but i don't think this is true...! (Chirac hating is very developped in the UK :tape: )

About the film, which i'm sooo looking forward to, there is already a French actress in the casting : Audrey Tautou (Amelie)
She will be great. No doubt about it! (btw where are you Ceze  ;) )

i think having Audrey Tautou is a much better decision than having that sopheu marceu (girl) i remember her from the bond movies. although the latter is sultrier and sexier...audrey fits the bill perfectly....shes the kind whom people can start finding prettier and prettier as the movie goes on.

ah I believe Ron he's as stand-up as they come.....Really why would a president of a country even think about trying to strong-arm a director over a stupid movie?

Yep that's what I thought. I think this article is just another opportunity to hate Chirac in Britain. I am far from being "Chiraquiens" but gosh this guy is representing our country and he deserves some respect from abroad in terms of international relationships. This story is another teasing of the British to say "booh look at what French President is doing...".
I'm not really objective though, as I have more than revenge in my mind towards the British people since OG 2012 were given to London and not Paris- as awaited...

really looking forward to watch this movie....
I read the book and loved it.....but the thing is now there are such high expectations....it might not live up to people's expectations...

its a killer caste though....the role of the monk is also given to the right guy...
