Pratt aiming for wildcardSportalhttp://www.sportal.com.au/webi/space.gifhttp://www.sportal.com.au/photos/news/075568news.jpghttp://www.sportal.com.au/webi/space.gifAustralian veteran Nicole Pratt believes her past performances should be enough to win her a wildcard into the Australian Open.

An injury-plagued 2005 has seen Pratt's ranking drop to 126, not enough to earn her an automatic berth in the first Grand Slam of the Year.

Pratt is embarking on a gruelling summer schedule to get herself ready for the tournament, and told Channel Ten she hopes her record of a fourth round appearance and two third rounds at the Australian Open will win her a spot.

"I will be devastated if I wasn't given the opportunity given what I have done in the past," she said.

"My ranking has just slipped out of that cutoff point and I hope Tennis Australia officials recognise I am playing like a top 50 player."

in that case she should have played in the wc tournament. if we go by past merit, dokic has done way better than her and yet, jelena played the tournament

She sure played in a lot of tournaments for being injury plagued this year. But outside of two semi Challenger showings and her pretty good match against Serena at Wimbledon, I sure don't see what the hell she is talking about.

But!!!! I love watching Nicole Pratt play. She may seem boring to you but I love watching how she fights for every point. She is not as good a retriever as say Francesca Schiavone, but she fights hard and that is what I enjoy about her.

She's playing like a top 50 player X 4.
Seriously why does this hag even get coverage. She's rude. She's not cute. She's old.
If Lleyton Hewitt decided to be a drag queen, then he would turn out to be Nicole Pratt.
She does work hard but like a year ago she thought she was ready to be a top 20 or top 10 player with Alicia Molik. Why should I believe her now?
I need results Nicole. Results. Not just a feeling you got after reading a fortune cookie.

She's playing like a top 50 player in her dreams. I am aussie who loves to see the aussie do well but I can't stand Pratt she past it and I hope the oz open organiziers give the wild card to an up anf coming and player and if she thinks she's so good she should breeze through the qualifing. Nicole Pratt is a has been never was been and never will be so stand aside gracefully and let the younger players have their time.

Dec 21st, 2005, 08:37 PM
Pratt is right, though, she DOES deserve that wild card. Even with a ranking of 126, she is still miles ahead of the next Aussie in the rankings. And it's not like she wasted her previous opportunities in the AO, like Jaslyn Hewitt used to do. Pratty has earned the wild card with her steady if not super-impressive career -- especially considering the lowly level of her countrywomen, outside of Molik and Stosur (only one other Aussie is even in the top 200).

:wavey: Morning All,

Yes I saw that story as well and felt perhaps the sun was getting to her. Let's be honest though, she deserves a WC in my opinion having been a stalwart for tennis here. The whole form vs ranking think is a bit over the top though.

Her biggest gripe that I saw in the interview seemed to be Mark Philly's automatic WC. She said something like "Yes, sure he's going to put bum's on seats, but it's more about the showmanship than his form" or something to that effect.

Sad thing is, giving WC's to players in their last years has proven fruitless for the organisers, singles WC's to Stubbs and Radford (nee Kunce) ring a bell.....it's a great opportunity for the younger ones to get exposure to top level tennis. Personally I think wild-cards should be granted to players like Hingis...and leave 4 WC's per slam for the best ranked juniors missing direct entry reguardless of their nationality. IMO :wavey:

:o No. That's Maria Fernanda Alves, a challenger level player from South America.

I can understand why Nicole would think this about herself. She's been hovering in and out of the top 50 for the better part of six years before this injury. At the same time, she's not getting back to the top 50. When your entire game is based around defense and quickness, it's almost impossible to achieve quality results to get inside the top 50 when you're nearing 33 and dealing with injury.

I think she could hover between 80-110 for another year or two, but that's about it.

i don't particularly like the guy but tell me one country who isn't going to give a wildcard to a player that has won 2 Davis Cups for that country, been a Wimbledon finalist, and beaten most of the top players of the last ten years.

As it stands Australia only has one player in the top 100 so IMO Phillipoussis should always be an automatic wildcard because the fact is he draws big crowds and has the ability to beat anyone (if she works).

to say if he deserves on then pratt does is laughable. Pratt will get one i would imagine - although she does herself no favours with her attitude.

Pratt should get one if Tennis Australia has any sense, because she has a better chance of winning a match than these young starlets that everyone's saying should get them, and it looks better for them if they can get 2 or 3 Aussies into round 2 at least.

I would have given Dokic one ahead of Pratt anyway, but at least Dokic was willing to do it the hard way. I think Nicole thought having to do that was beneath her. Her attitude and paranoia are annoying.

I think though that Nicole she is setting herself up for a fall coming out with statements saying she deserves a WC, and is playing like a top 50 player.

Pratt played all of 2005 with a niggling foot injury which she really should have had surgery for.

To my knowledge she still hasnt fully recovered from it, and it has affected her mobility and form.

She should be able to get back into the top 100 in early 2006, not sure if she has what it takes to get back into the top 50 but give the girl credit! She has been top 35 and I think she can get back into the top 70 at least! A positive attitude is a must for her to have any chance, so dont bag her for having that and believing in herself, remember 90% of tennis at pro level is mental!!!

She is certainly worthy of a WC!!

Nicole might be wrong with her Top 50 comments but she's a Top 50 player compared to all of us

While Nicole has very little chance against Mary, it would be fun to see some people eat there words if she won.
