It is not that hard to guess that the "Big Surprise" is Martina Hingis
She loves Tokyo and of course will play here :D

Well it looks to me that if that is the case, she might not be playing Syndey.
It doesn't seem to be that sane to play possibly 5 weeks in a row with the possibility of a foot and ankle injury coming back again.

Yeah but she may lose early at all the tournaments

5 weeks full tennis? You are certainly quite optimistic. It could be just 3 matches before Tokyo ;)

5 weeks won't be that crazy for Hingis because it's not like she'll be getting deep into the later rounds of all those tournaments. I see her winning maybe reaching quarters at best. One cannot expect her to just come back and start winning matches.

My guess would be Hingis, I think I rememer her playing there often... but Monica would definitely be a nice surprise, maybe Martina N. is playing singles  A Martina vs. Martina final :)

Hingis always did well there, winning in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2002:D Lindsay won it in in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2004;) so together, they won it 8 years in a row:eek: Maria stopped the streak last year;)

Wow given those stats and if indeed the surprise is Martina, tokyo should have a really great competitive atmosphere...

Elena D. was injured there in 2005, in her semi with Asagoe.
It's tough to play a Tier I the week after a major.
Crazy scheduling.
