And crashing through the fence

you know a match was great when the highlights include two double faults and 10 return errors (not to mention tons of other ues)

Venus will win AO if she can consistently use that type of net play. She has not been hitting drop shots that well for years.

venus looked as though she was trying out new plays with those drop volleys, whereas serena doesn't look as though she's trying? Kinda worrying, I hope she manages to save as many of her points from her win at OZ 2005... Some good ground strokes but still not of 2003 serena. I guess it was only a practice/exhibition match anyway!

BONES08
Dec 20th, 2005, 03:16 PM
I think that too. Venus was working on some new plays, and if she uses them the tour is in trouble. I like lindsey and Maria, but if Venus uses those plays then she will kill them without even worrying about her baseline game. A lot of people won't be able to get to her dropshots, and they will be waiting for one of her deep penetrating groundstrokes.

I think the highlight of that match was when Serena fell, she also found that very funny. I think Venus is definetely working out hard for sure, so does Serena

i dont know i know this was just an exho and all but im a bit worried with Rena she looked a bit "lazy" or something and she doesnt jump all that much in her serve since she had the knee injury( hopefully im just worrying for nothing after all this wasnt a real match) bring it on at the AO Rena .

Vee is hitting the ball deep and heavy her net game is just amazing right now :worship:

Serena isn't playing really her best in exhibition matches, she wants to be carefull and not take to many risks with matches like these. I think we'll see the real Serena in Hong Kong, and otherwise don't worry.

dearest serenafans,
do NOT worry about exhibition matches! not a single second! you simply cannot compare them to real matches.
as komorli told us a few weeks back. the lenght of the court wasn't even that of a real tennismatch? how do you expect her to play like in a match where a lot is at stake (sic?)?

I'm not saying she will win the next GS, but really, imho there is NO reason whatsoever to doubt serena's play only on this performance.

Serena plays poorly against her sister in exho's AND in tour matches. At their last meeting at the US Open the quality was high for half of the first set and just went down from there. I think it's psychological. I also wonder sometimes if they try and purposely (or subconsciously) keep the head to head even for the fans and for the tour it's more exciting. Hate to put that out there but it has crossed my mind a few times and I am sure I am not the only one. Especially when I Serena hoofing around on the court and I know she can play much better.

Venus was sharp and light on her feet. She was working the angles, placements and possibilities of tennis. And she was relaxed. Key thing for her.

Serena wasn't. Period.

Neither performance in this exhibition is any real indication of how they'd perform in a WTA match tomorrow, not to mention in a month's time.

@ Serena crashing through the fence

You all keep saying this is just an exo and Serena will play better, etc...
Serena played closed to this at the Us Open too! She would swing and stay there.
She just looks out of it. When she tried she couldn't get to the ball.
Rather worrying I think

In 2003, the Serena that walked out did not accept losing, ever.

Ah, hopefully she is just going through it, and will arise better than ever.

True. No way she'll be playing like 2002 anytime soon. Not yet showing the flatness of stroke, the thunder of pace and the swiftness of movement we saw back then. I think folks are hoping for the rough and ragged and confused yet determined Serena of Aussie 2005, who can certainly show up in a few weeks.

That court looked extremely quick and the surroundings were so close to the players. I found the way Serena handled crashing into the signage around the court pretty funny. Venus seemed more concerned about it than she was. Eh, it seemed that Venus was working on her game and that Serena was just there to have a hit. She'll be fine by Hong Kong and her groundstrokes seem to have more fluidity and the heaviness they used to have. Last year she seemed so timid on her shots. About her serve, I don't think she was really even trying to serve big because she knows she has a consistent serve, whereas Venus was working on her serve and her volleys. Both girls will be fine in time. The only thing that scared me was the lack of muscle in Serena's arms. They were so skinny.

LoL u guys are silly.

They were dinking and looping over every ball, we know they don't hit like that. It was just for entertainment/exhibition purposes.

Serena doesn't look overweight anymore.

Keep in mind that they are not going to put everything into these matches. Why risk a serious injury. These matches are for fun, and the girls had fun with it. Did they want to win? of course...but it's not like a Slam final out there.

It was a nice watch, thank you for posting :)

They put nearly everything they had in last year. Honestly.

Venus looked to be playing really nicely and was so good at the net and really compfortable in all areas all be it an exhibition. They looked to be going thru the motions a lot but Still Serena didnt look that good and for a fun exhibition Serena didnt look to be having fun she looked bored and angry.

Well then maybe Serena has just taken a lot off her shots? A lot of her forehands didnt look they they had they same speed and depth to them. Could just be the feed too.

<picky picky> According to my dear friend , the people who attended, most of whom who aren't tennis fans just enjoyed having the sisters there period. . She sent me some cool close up pics of Vee with the kiddos at the Ronald Mc Donald house, the program for the entire tour , a huge pic of the sisters on the front page of the plain dealer newspaper , and even her press pass  There's a lovely pic of Miss Vee advertising V Starr interior-- I'll scan it later :p

My assessment is that when Serena would actually hit out on her shots, they were pretty good. Her backhand was great as usual, and her forehand looked okay. To me, it seemed like she didn't go for anything; she was just trying to keep the ball in play and Venus was the one taking the first strike in the rallies. Physically, Serena looked better than she has in the last nine months. Her movement was a little suspect; it didn't seem like she was getting off the mark as fast as we're used to seeing. I think this is a positive step in the right direction for her though. Venus looked brilliant. Both of them have put in a lot of work.

Heh.

Neither one of them were hitting even at 50% their normal pace, so I take this as what it was: an exhibition.

Did anyone notice how when Venus went to the net, Serena didn't bother trying to pass her? Or how neither one really cared to run much? They're not there competing for a title, they're there to entertain and have fun.

I'm not going to sit here and complain about boring play or lack of movement, because this was LESS than an exhibition, it's really just a fun, charity event.

Thanks Marcell, that was a good video. Venus looks sharper than Serena, but neither of them better go to the AO playing like that. Serena looks to have lost some weight, but she's not as fit and a step slower. She won't defend her title like this. What is this her not jumping into her serve anymore? Anyway, I enjoyed just watching them play again. It's been so long.

Although it was "just an exhibition," I would have liked to have seen more effort from both of them. Those people paid to watch the Williams sisters play a match, not practice. ;)
