GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) - Martina Hingis will make her competitive return to tennis at a WTA tournament on the Gold Coast starting on New Year's Day.

Last month, 25-year-old Hingis announced she planned to return to the professional circuit in 2006 and end a four-year retirement.

"I'm very excited to be making my return to competitive tennis in Australia, I have always felt at home on the Australian courts," Hingis said in a statement released by organizers on Tuesday.

Maria Sharapova is among the other entries at the Australian women's hardcourt tournament at Royal Pines.

"I know I'll get some tough matches and it will allow me to get used to the Australian summer coming from the European winter, both of which will be helpful with my preparation for the Australian Open," Hingis said.

She made a brief comeback in February at the Thailand Open to raise funds for Asian tsunami victims, and lost in the first round.

Hingis won five Grand Slam singles titles, and was only 16 1/2 when she took over the top ranking in March 1997. She won 40 career singles titles and 36 doubles titles, and hopes to receive a wild card into the Australian Open at Melbourne in January, a tournament she won three times.

Meanwhile, former top-five player Jelena Dokic won a wild card playoff in Melbourne for a place in the Australian Open main draw.

Dokic started her career in Australia, and represented Australia through 2000, but under her controversial father and coach Damir, she switched nationality in 2001 to the nation of her birth, Serbia and Montenegro. Since she and her father split in 2003, the 22-year-old has returned to Australia to revive her career which includes five singles titles and a Wimbledon semifinals.

I knew it. My brother was Martina in ping pong and I was Maria. Martina hit so weak and I was overhitting - I lost 6-1, 6-1. :s

Also you dont know how far she will go in each tournament. She might lose in the first round (which is imho absolutly possible) and a start in both (Gold Coast and Sydney) could be usefull then.

Anyway good luck for her! :clap2:

Hingis to return at Australian Hardcourt Championships

SYDNEY, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Former world number one Martina Hingis will make her eagerly-awaited return to competitive tennis at next month's Australian Hardcourt Championships, tournament organisers announced on Tuesday.

The five-times grand slam singles champion, who has been absent from the sport for three years with a string of foot, heel and ankle problems, will make her comeback at the Gold Coast tournament which begins on Jan. 1.

"I'm very excited to be making my return to competitive tennis in Australia, I have always felt at home on the Australian courts," the Swiss said in a statement.

"I'm really looking forward to competing again and making my first trip to the Gold Coast.

"I know I'll get some tough matches and it will allow me to get used to the Australian summer coming from the European winter, both of which will be helpful with my preparation for the Australian Open."

The 25-year-old won 40 singles titles and 36 doubles crowns before her injury problems cut short her career in 2002.

Hingis enjoys an impressive record in Australia, having reached the Melbourne Park final six successive years from 1997 to 2002, winning it three times.

Australian Hardcourt Championships tournament director Liz Smylie was thrilled that Hingis chose to make her return at the Gold Coast event.

"Martina is a legend of women's tennis and an unbelievable performer in Australia, making the final of the Australian Open six times," Smylie said. "Given the amazing career that she's already had, it's hard to believe she's still only 25-years-old. "Time is definitely on her side and it's an honour for the tournament to host her return to tennis."

i don't think her playing Sydney is confirmed. There was one article about it a while back but that was just speculation. Like "it seems logical for her to...".

I suppose it all depends on how well she does at the Gold Coast. If she gets deep in the draw like into a Semi Final or further, she may decide to skip sydney.

whoa....good decisions because:
1. The player in sydney usually higher ranked.. it maybe unuseful to play there as hingis is a newbie now.... >.<
2. she will have a chance to measure herself.. what level is she now in women's tennis :P
cheers hingis!
