PYW Rankings

This week, two ITF events hosted impressive fields. In the beautiful Italian city of Bergamo, a $50K crown was up for grabs; in Dubai, players fought for a $75K title. Ekaterina Bychkova and Kaia Kanepi [Dubai] were crowned the champions.

Important changes in the rankings:

- Estonia is the new strong tennis nation in PYW. With Maret Ani and [b]Kaia Kanepi performing extremely well in the PYW ITF Tour, the Baltic country finds two players in the Top 100. Moreover, Estonia has a fair chance of reaching the semi finals of the PYW Fed Cup, where it plays in a tough group with players such as Dementieva, Myskina, Kirilenko, Petrova, Dulko and Diaz-Oliva. Kanepi's win in Dubai was not that big of a surprise, but she did need to eliminate some of Tamarine Tanasugarn's match points in the final!

- Selima Sfar is one of the top players from the African continent. Having had quite a poor year on the PYW Tour in 2005, the Tunisian fell outside the Top 100. Her semi final performance in Dubai doesn't launch her inside this top, but her position of #101 brings her very close and with some new-found self-confidence, Sfar might surprise some in 2006.

- Reaching a quarter final in only your second event on the PYW Tour is impressive. It is even more impressive, if that tournament is a $75K ITF event with some big guns. Yaroslava Shvedova might be another Russian talent destined to reach the Top 50. We will keep a close watch, as Shvedova will want to play more on the Tour next season!

There are more landslides in the rankings though. Just download the files to see these changes!

Bergamo's top seed Ekaterina Bychkova didn't seem a likely title contender after her first round match against Bosnian PYW débutant and qualifier Sandra Martinovic. The Russian lost the first set, before recovering in the second and demolishing her opponent in the third set. A straight sets victory in the second round was followed by three-set struggles against wild card player Tamira Paszek, #4 seed Maria Elena Camerin and #2 seed Maret Ani of Estonia. Bychkova's stamina won her the title and earned her a place in the Top 100. She rises from #114 to #87; +27.

Road to the title:

R32: Sandra Martinovic BIH [Q] | 5-7 6-4 6-0
R16: Adriana Barna GER | 7-5 6-0
QF: Tamira Paszek AUT [WC] | 7-5 3-6 6-0
SF: Maria Elena Camerin ITA [4] | 7-5 4-6 6-4
F: Maret Ani EST [2] | 1-6 6-4 6-2

When I try to copy it, my screen freezes. It's quite a big list of over 600 players

You don't have Excel?
