Wow. She is obsessed it seems with playing and beating Maria.. There has been at least 3 interviews so far with her hopes of playing Maria..I never remember'd Hingis wanting to play a player so badly even when she was at the top..What is her fascination with Mrs. Sharapova.

i don't think she's obssessed at all. she just all curious about tennis and she wants to compete with the best player she doesn't know.
of course reading title like "Martina anxious to play Maria" make you think she obssessed. Journalists may be obssessed cause they want to put the light on every single lil "i want to beat her" story even if it's not even electrified yet.

I just think that Maria's a new face for her at the top of tennis. The rest of the top players she has pretty much played and beat before so I think it's more of a challenge to see how she can do against someone of the newer generation of players that is of such a high calibre. Of course many of the ones that she played prior to her retirement have now improved their games and I am sure that will be interesting for her as well, but it's always exciting to play against new people. I remember Lindsay making a similar comment not too long ago herself about that, just saying that playing someone like Venus for instance wasn't all that exciting as before just because they have played so many times. You know what to expect, you know that opponent's game so well so it's not quite the same feeling as those first few matches.

I think it comes natural... when you comeback, and you feel in shape. That you want to messure yourself with the best in the game. Now, she knows she can beat Lindsay, the Williams sisters etc. But Maria, she has never played...

It's pretty obvious why Hingis wants to play and beat Sharapova. Most of the other top girls on the tour Hingis played with when she was not retired, but Sharapova is a new girl and Hingis probably wants to prove that she is better than her. Sharapova is not experienced playing against players with huge variety and strategy in their games, so Hingis wants to take advantage of that and put her in her place.

It's Ms. Sharapova.
Martina never said she is going to beat her. She simply said she looks forward to playing her when she returns, more so than the other girls because she's the only current top player she has never played. She gets asked about it so she answers it. I don't see the "obsession".

She answered the question right in her interview. She's the only top player that she hasn't played. She knows, probably all too well, how her game stakes up against Davenport, Serena, and Venus: all players she was consistently losing to and all power hitters. Sharapova is the new kid on the block and less experienced even though she is a fighter. This is where Hingis thinks she might have her best shot. When Venus came on the tour, Hingis jerked her around the court and completely exploited her inexperience. It would be fun to see her playing cat and mouse with Maria should they get into a long rally, but Maria will eat her serve for breakfast.

I think she like everyone sees that if you can move Sharapova around the court and make the match a race instead of a hitting battle then likely the better shotmaker on the move is going to win.

I think Hingis sees Maria as the most beatable of the top players for her to compete with right now. It's not a secret that Maria doesn't play extremely well when a player uses their variety. It's not a secret that Maria isn't the best net player. It isn't a secret that Maria doesn't have that much of a defensive side.
To Hingis, Maria is likely another version of Lindsay but not as willing to change up her game when things aren't going good. At least Lindsay can come up with some pretty good volleys at net even if she looks down and out.
Most people continue to say that Sharapova will eat Hingis' serve, the fact remains that Hingis had a 35-25 record against the three best returners ever in the women's game (Lindsay, Seles, Pierce).

Where do you come off getting that Martina Hingis wants to play Maria so bad? It's funny how people can come to conclusions about degrees of things based on the number of interviews they read. If they read one interview with Hingis saying she wants to play Maria, then it's Hingis just merely wants to play her. But with each interview that Martina says she wants to play Maria, somehow her interest in playing Maria grows? Has it ever occurred to you that she is simply giving an answer to questions prosed? Do you expect her to give a different name every time? Martina wants to play Maria most, because Maria is the newest bright start since Hingis' time. She's played all the other girls. But it doesn't mean that she wants to play Maria so badly and that she thinks she's gonna beat her. It doesn't mean that she wants to play Maria more badly now than she ever wanted to play Venus, Serena, and Lindsay.

Well, if she's anything like me, she's probably looking forward to kissing Maria at the end of the match

She is really the only one she hasnt played and she is the "it girl" something that Martina was back in the late 90's.

Take this as Hingis does not do any by chance; there is a purpose to everything she does.
So it is under that guideline I am giving my opinion as to why she wants to play Maria.

Maria is top player, but Hingis thinks Maria has weaknesses she, Hingis can exploit and shake Maria's confidence. And if Hingis has a good performance against Maria, that will not only send a signal to the top 10 that Hingis can do some damage, it also forces these top 10 to think more when playing her.

Hingis always had a way to keep other players honest, else they could be ridiculed and embarrased by what she can do and by her forward thinking, anticipation and court sense. You could alwasy sense players are nervous when playing her.

If she can have a good performance gainst Maria, she feel she can bring that
self doubt back in the mind of her opponents. Maria is a measuring stick for her.

Hingis has been out for 3 years, Maria will crush her. Martina wants to know how badly. So she'll know where her game stacks up to the newer generation. Yet Hingis is letting the Maria's overhype get to her. Has she played a faster and better player who is actually conditioned? Has she played Svetlana yet??

I am curious to see how Venus and her pan out?? I want a Venus and Hingis match so badly.

People keep underestimating Maria...she too will enjoy the challenge against Martina.
Its not an obsession just yet :p....Martina probably wants to be back where Maria is and playing her is a good way to start
