Hello everybody. This interview was published today, in a brazilian website. I translated it myself, hope its ok.

Hingis anxious to play Sharapova in her Comeback

Q: You have won 76 titles and millions of dolars, was on top of the rankings for over 200 weeks, and everything else. Why do you want to comeback?
A: I love tennis, and love playing tennis. I stopped because of physical problems, but I think I will be ok. ;)

Q: After you stopped your career, did you ever thought you would comeback someday?
A: Not in the beggining. Only after I worked as a comentarist, played some exhibition matches, then I started thinking I could give myself another chance. I am not old! I am only 25. But this could be my last chance.. so I didn’t want to go away without at least trying.

Q: What was the exact point where you made your decision? Was it watching Mary Pierce at 30 still reaching the finals?
A: Well, not really. One thing heads to another.. playing exhibitions, charity matches, feeling well physically, playing one set, and then two sets..

Q: Watching Lindsay Davenport, your ex-rival, reaching the top spot again, was also an inspiration for you?
A: Of course! Lindsay, Pierce, Mauresmo, they are all in the top of the game.. Sharapova is the only new star that I have never played.

Q: I heard that you are looking forwards to play her?
A: Yes!

Q: Perhaps a GS final would be the perfect scenarium?
A: I hope so! But that’s what you are saying.. Just reaching the finals would be great. But I will love to play against Sharapova, at any time, even in the first round.

Q: Defeating Sharapova and reaching number 5 in the ranking, is that good enough for you?
A: I can’t tell you now.

Q: Did you set any goals yet?
A: No I haven’t. The most important thing for me is to play a high level of tennis. But loosing or winning.. Obviously I prefer to win, but playing well at a GS could be one of my goals.

Q: Do you plan to play every tournment, or just focus on a few of them?
A: For now I just plan to play the Australian and see what happens there.

Q: Are you mentally prepared for the circuit?
A: Of course! Don’t forget I am coming out of a 3 year vacation (laughing)!

Q: And how was your routine?
A: I studied a lot..[/COLOR]

Q: In Zurique?
A: Yes.. I worked a lot as a comentarist, I played with my horses, skiing, tennis..

Q: People are very excited about your comeback because Switzerland might become the ultimate force in the sport.
A: (laughs) :)

Q: Did you talk to Roger Federer lately?
A: Yes. I got a message from him. (Good to see you again. We missed you - ).

Q: That’s kind of him.
A: Yes it is. He is great and deserves his success.

Q: Did tennis changed a lot?
A: It has become more atlethic. But people are still there. Look at Agassi, who is 35, and still playing so well. So I think it is possible. Today I feel like a “middle-aged” player, not old.

Q: There are rumors that you will play doubles with Martina Navratilova..
A: Who knows? We recently played exhibitions together, but always against each other. She knows how I play, so… She has my phone number! (laughing). :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Q: Will you return to the tour with your mother (as a coach)?
A: (serious) I am just trainning in her academy. :o

Q: Chris Evert said you might reach the top 6, but not #1.
A: That’s just her opinion.   Like I said, I did not set up any goal. I will not be desapointed if that happens.

Q: It’s hard to believe that you did not set up any goal… at least technicaly.
A: I will tell you after the Australian Open.

Q: You’ve always been a winner.. and now you could be a looser. Does that sacares you?
A: This (loosing) will happen. I am taking the risk. :fiery: :fiery:

Q: Just because you love tennis?
A: Of course! It has given me everything I got, and the life I have.

Q: What else did you miss?
A: The whole atmosphere, the big tournments, the adrenaline, the public..

Q: Some say you are coming back just because you cannot stand watching Sharapova beeing the new darling of the public.
A: (laughing ironicaly). Yeah, right.   I am sooooooooo jealous of her! You bet! :tape: :tape: :tape:

- Again: Q: What else did you miss?
- All the 'stupid journalist questions' !!! :fiery:

Q: It’s not true, then..
A: I come back for the challenge. After I stopped, studying was the challenge. Now it is to play well.

Q: You mentioned Davenport and Agassi. Are they ‘examples’ for you?
A: No doubt. There they are, year after year.. playing and winning titles. Mary Pierce too. I also like to watch Roger play, he is a genious, and also the Williams.

Q: What about Venus?
A: She always made me play my best tennis. The best matches I ever played were against her. But like I said, I would love and I am looking forwards to play Maria.

Q: If you get Sharapova in the first round of the Australian, and wins..
A: You are trying to make a point out of this.. (laughing). I swear I did not set this goal. If I get to play her in the first round, great. If its in a later stage of the draw, even better. Let’s see what happens. If it will be in Australia or maybe later. But whenever it happens, too bad for one of us!!!

And, that's it. Bye Y'all. :wavey:

I would not have thought she would have said that Venus made her play her best tennis, but they are in the same era.

She knows greatness when she speaks about Vee. I think she'll beat Sharapova, but she can't let Sharapova get a first strike in a rally. She is playing the A.O. OPEN for sure.

Thanks, btexas! You put a lot of hard work into that for us. :hearts:

Martina is such a happy, light-hearted person; it really comes through in her interviews. Interesting to read this one right after reading the Monica one -- they are SUCH different people, but they must have something in common in their characters, because they were both amazing champions in their day. :worship:

I would not have thought she would have said that Venus made her play her best tennis, but they are in the same era. It's a fact that they bring out the best in each other. :)

In the old days no one held a better press conference than Hingis. I reckon if she comes back strong, were all in store for some more good interviews...

Rough crowd here!
Thanks for the translation btexas.

Wonder why she is so intent on beating the Ova girl? And didn't they play in juniors since it was Martina who brought up the age thing with Maria?

Edited because I can read. I'm just half asleep.

It's ok. In fact I almost gave up in the middle of it !

But I became a huge fan of Hingis after watching her match in Rio. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

I am not sure she will kick Maria's ass, but hopefully she will have a successful return. I also hope she plays doubles with Navratilova, at least once - It would be awesome!

Your efforts are always appreciated, btexas!:D

Doesn't look like Martina is putting too much pressure on herself, but it certainly looks like the journalists are.:o

Hmm, looks like no warm up events until the Australian...

I still think she could have done something to help gauge and prepare...

Maybe she feels like it could be the same with Maria.

I would not have thought she would have said that Venus made her play her best tennis, but they are in the same era.She has said that before. I think they have a lot of respect for each other--that of course developed over time. Because in the beginning. . .

Yeah, definitely. I really think they knew they had to play their best tennis to win when they met. I miss it, and I can't wait to see it again (and hopefully Martina will be competitive). :)

I just went to her Russian website and watched some matches. She was redirecting pace from my favorite Venus at the 1998 French. She was real good on clay. She also destroyed Pierce at AO open 97.
I think she can beat Maria, or at least really frustrate her.
You an tell from 2004 interviews that she had something up her sleeve because she was always smiling about something.
