Leanne Baker saved her best for last today as she blew Tracey O'Connor off the court. Well done Leanne!! You rock!

This is the 7th time Leanne Baker has won the singles title. Last year she beat top seed Shelly Stephens in the final 6-1 6-4.

Leanne also won the doubles with 6-1 6-1 win over Paula Marama and her partner.

This is The 11th NZ Champs doubles title in a row for Leanne. A true Champion!!

Today, Leanne was on fire, if she playes like this next year, she will rise into top 250 I hope! And top 50 for doubles!

Hey good job Leanne! Do you know if she gets any money to add to her purse? (Although from what I have seen, she probably doesn't carry one. ;) )

I hope she teams with Fran again and they win Auckland! :D

Yes, I think she does win some $$, I will try and find out how much. I am about 99% sure she will play with Fran at the ASB Classic next year. Although, a few weeks ago, people were talking about a possible pairing with Nadia Petrova.

Hell no! Infact, Leanne is not even going to be playing Auckland qualies because she did not apply for a WC:sad::eek:!! She did not apply because of two reasons; 1) She wants them to go to NZ's rising talent and 2) Because she feels that she is not good enough to compete! Well she has just bitched slaped everyone else in the country, so what does that say to you!??!

She is playing in the doubles MD tho.

Leanne is 24:). 25 in early Jan. Still 7 or 8 more years of quality tennis ahead! I see her as a Maureen Drake type of player. Very good doubles, also good in singles, just needs to beleive in her self!

Eden and Paula did not play for over a year. They came back late this year and played a couple of tourneys. Eden did not play in this tournament, Paula did and lost in the 1/4 finals as the #4 seed, to very talented and hardhitting 16 year old K.Vano (#5 seed).

They had very good results in 2002 and 2003. What's happen? This year they almost haven't played

Congrats to Leanne! :)

Too bad she won't play Auckland qualies, though. Strange decision, since she's not all that old herself.

Why would turning down a WC be a bitchslap to the other girls?

What I mean is that Leanne has just thrashed the pants off everyone else in the country, in the tourney, so if she dosn't think that shes good enough to compete, what does that say about everyone else! lol.

Ah, very true. It's pretty selfless actually that she would feel the desire to give it to someone younger...It seems as if she is only improving, it's a shame she isn't more confident...

I feel the same way. This year, she has been playing the some of the best singles of her life. Had some awesome results. But I feel that she is the only New Zealander that could compete in the qualie draw .Well lets hope that she can make up for it in the doubles. After being injured for a couple of months, her doubles ranking has fallen to #150! And if she can't defend these points, well...I don't want to think what will happen!!!

Tennis: Winning streak a surprise even to Baker

Waikato's Leanne Baker continues to create all sorts of records after winning yet another New Zealand Residentials title.

The 24-year-old from Te Awamutu, who has a wildcard for the ASB Classic doubles main draw after making the WTA event final last year, was happy with her victories in the national champs but was blissfully unaware of how many she had won.

"I thought it was six singles titles and that this would be my tenth doubles title," she said.

In fact the singles victory was her third consecutive win and her seventh in nine years. Her doubles win with teenager Kairangi Vano over Paula Marama and Lisa Wilkinson was her 11th consecutive triumph. She won her first national senior doubles title with Rewa Hudson in 1995 and has been etched on the trophy ever since.

Her singles win over second seed Tracey O'Connor was as straight forward as the 6-0, 6-2 scoreline suggests, although O'Connor was having trouble with an ankle injury. Baker had an appendix operation just three weeks ago.

A win would have been part of the plan for O'Connor, 22, to further her case for a wildcard into the ASB Classic qualifying.

She may have put herself ahead of Vano in the list for wildcards but will have to prove her fitness first.

In the men's final top seed Dan King-Turner beat second seed Adam Thompson 6-4, 6-2 in a well-compiled effort.

The win means King-Turner, 21, goes into the four-man Heineken Open wildcard playoff after Christmas with a distinct advantage over Thompson, Rubin Statham and William Ward.

The victory was also sweet for the former Cantabrian, who was a beaten finalist to James Shortall in a third-set tiebreak two years ago in the Residentials.

The final was serve-for-serve until the seventh game, in which King-Turner broke Thompson and managed to hold on for a 6-4 first set win.

In the second set it was breaks at the third and seventh games which gave King-Turner the lead to serve out 6-2 for the match.

"It was close at the start, he had me at love-40 on my serve at one stage. I just had to hang tough and cut down on my errors. After the break in the first set I felt the pressure go off me slightly," said King-Turner, who is ranked at 676 compared with Thompson's 799.

"It's all good preparation for the wildcard tournament and it's great to finally win the Residentials."

The next domestic tournament is the national 18s at North Harbour.
