WTA has their fair share of superpowers: davenport, williams, clijsters, sharapova n henin wen on form, pierce and now the return of hingis.

ATP much more exhilirating to watch i thinkg though :)

Me too. The only time I watch men matches is if its an American like Roddick Blake or Agassi other than that I really could care less about the men. Idk y but I think its cuz I started out watching the Williams sisters and honestly I only watch their matches when they are on tv or the matches that are in their draw. I think I'm more of a hardcore fan but I have strong favorites that I really care about.

I've never been that attracted to men's tennis (please read the phrase entirely, i am attracted to men  )

But i really can't explain why... for most of my comptriot, it comes from justine & Kim but I liked tennis before... But i became attracted to tennis mostly because of Martina and Steffi, so I guess that's why I still like women's tennis, plus I really find men's matches boring

I find women's tennis more entrtaining, maybe because it seems to me the ladies play using their whole heart. For instance, if they lose, they often start crying. In mens tennis I would name the game as 'not so personal'. Men fight on court, but it looks like after the match none of them remembers his deafeat.

Well for once womens matches always have more drama in them..Much more breaks of serves..Situation can change at anytime of match..Most men can hold their serves comfortably on other hand...Yeah and also the matches in GSs are 3 setters..I just cant take a 5 setter match...Its too much for me..yeah and as drive volley said thers more emotions in womens matches...Makes it more entertaining....

From a player's prospective, I enjoy watching the ATP because they are all phenomenal shot making athletes.

From a mudane prospective, seeking entertainment value, I enjoy the WTA because underneath many of the matches is a much more palpable undertone of drama.

well Sharapova doesn't play on the ATP tour. Vaidisova too.

i think it's because i started out watching the women's tour and ever since i've been like stuck on it. and i'm a guy so. =P

but i do follow the ATP tour. but the only person i root for over there is Andy Roddick. the men's game is too fast and too friendly.

i want some drama!

I enjoy tennis with strategy.
I prefer where power is not the all important factor.
I dont like it when one stroke, the serve, dictates everything that happens.
Thus I prefer women play.
I still enjoy the men on clay.
Rodger Federer is enjoyable to watch on any serface so is Nadal. They are saving men's tennis at the moment.

Because its not all about the Serve!!

I mean come on, there may be less errors but what is more dreadful and boring than watching a match between Andy Roddick and Ivo Karlovic?? NOTHING.. All they both can do is serve and when the serve is actually returned (which is almost never) ITs still boring! THis happens with alot of players.

In womens tennis there are more rallies, not exactly longer but more lol. Its just alot better to me.

Dont get me wrong, I do still match Mens tennis when its on though, as its the only tennis that is on

men's tennis is so much better. i used to prefer women's tennis just because it had more of a life to it but the older i've got the more i've come to appreciate the vast differences in quality that exists between the genders. I still love women's tennis though.

It ISN'T 'better'. It's different.

The WTA, at the top, has a near perfect balance of power and guile. The upper reaches of the ATP has so much power many points are not even fought over. The lower reaches of the WTA so little power many points are just a wainting game for an unforced error. It's at the top of the women's tour where power and strategy meet for lunch.

I wouldn't say the Men's game is better, it's just different. The women can't hit the ball like the men do, so they do the best they can. If the men hit the ball the way the women did, you would see just as many errors and the ball would go so fast that it'd be hard to follow. I like watching a random Men's tennis match moreso than a random woman's tennis match, on clay anyway, because yuo can see the strategy and shot making abilities better than you can with the ladies.

However, I really only like watching a handful of players on the WTA Tour, but the main reason is because you can follow it much betters; its not just about the serve. (Well except for when Serena is playing at her best ;-) )

The reason I like the men's game better is because of one man: Roger Federer. Plus women's tennis is usually an errorfest, while the true top players in the men's game are unbelievable shot-makings and can hit out with almost no problems. Plus the men are better tennis players anyway, and women's tennis is second-class in terms of quality and talent. Roger Federer is just amazing and when he, Nadal, or Safin play, I'll certainly sit back and just enjoy what I'm seeing.

I definitely don't think thats fair. The men and women hit the ball COMPLETELY different! Its not fair to compare the game. Quite frankly, I think its impressive that the women can play so well with so little margin for error. Its harder for a woman to play the game because you have to be able to hit the ball at 70mph consistently and keep them within the lines. For a girl, thats incredibly difficult. You have to barely get the ball over the net, put your entire body into the shot, and rely heavily on muscle mass. The men, hell a 14 year old boy, can hit 70mph consistently without trying very hard. I remember playing my coach, who is an All-American College player, and I was bracing for rediculous groundstrokes and whatev, and I easily overpowered her. She still would win because of her consistency, but I had been able to outhit her with a 10th of her training and talent.

The men are physically able to play at a different level, its not the ladies fault.
Cut them some slack

I'm not saying it is their fault, but it is what it is. A male player is better than a female player (pro of course). Men are built natural stronger than women. I would say that it takes a ton of talent to hit with the amount of power and spin that the men do. They also hit as hard as the women, but with more spin, which slows the ball down some. It is pretty hard to control 130 mph serves and returns too. Therefore the men's game to me, is more awe-inspiring and the winners they hit are so great. Let's not forget that Andre and Lleyton both hit very flat and play the same style that the women do.

I'm not saying that women pros suck at tennis, but when you compare them to the men, they can't physically stand up, due to the way they are built. That's what this thread is about, comparing the ATP to the WTA. I like women's tennis, but I find men's tennis much more enjoyable because I know how incredible they are to play at that level.

Well you can't compare Men's and Women's Tennis because Men and Women are inherently different, and its a given that the men can perform better due to their physical strengths. That goes without saying in any Men vs. Women comparison.

I do see your point though.

Yep, I know. When looking at the WTA and ATP players relatively, they are quite awesomely talented. I guess being a tennis player myself, I have my biases. I look at the women's game and go "Wow, I can serve that fast" or "My winners look like that." I shouldn't look at it as men vs. women, but rather as two differnet ways tennis is played due to different physiques. Women's tennis and men's tennis are very different, even at the high school level. I just wish at times that the power women could control their shots better, therefore creating high quality matches.

ATP tennis is quite superior. The ATP as an organization is way better. What i like from WTA is the agression between top players. They really want to kill each other and put their heart on court. Don't know if that's because they're men but ATP guys looks a bit robotic, "i'm so  to be mad", "my opponent is my buddy" atitude. Don't get me wrong, i don't like fights or nasty behaviour, but most matches between the top women are vicsceral. Few ATP guys display something like that. No matter how beautiful play JesusFed or how athletic is Hewitt, The "i want to eat you alive" energy in the tiebreak betwen Pierce and Venus in Wimby QF was amazing :yeah:

On the other hand, i couldn't care less about women outside top 20 (only when they're kicking a top player's butt or rising) while a match between two top 50 guys still can be good :yeah:

Glad to see this thread went back to a serious discussion of the WTA product vs the
ATP product.
I think the fact that on this board there is a thread talking about how 49 of the top 100 women won no titles in 2005 says it all. The fact the JHH played only nine events last year(correct me if I'm wrong on that), the only woman to play single digit events of the top 60 women and is still ranked number six in the world is cause for concern for those of us who like women's tennis.
Lindsay, the world number one, didn't win a Slam last year. Federer, the number one man, won 2. Nadal won one. Between the top two men there are 22 titles.
It's sad that so many threads about women's tennis are fixated on looks and not play. Neither Steffi Graf or Monica Seles are raving beauties but no one denies they had game. As long as posters can call it a tennis discussion when they're talking about who has the best rack or who is the prettiest the WTA product is in serious trouble.

Edited because as an English major I should know how to write a complete sentence.

Completely agree with you about the threads fixating on players' looks. I find similarly  the people who favor/support players who look good. (I think it makes them feel good about themselvles, like having a trophy wife ;) .)

But just wanted to say, about the top 100 not won titles, that's not surprising or bad............ there are only so many titles, and naturally the women at the top are gonna win more. So I don;t see that as a negative in any way.

I think men's tennis is more popular because it provides far more entertaining matches from a wider variety of players, whereas with the WTA, you're reliant an a core of only a few top players who can really thrill a viewer. 90% of matches that don't contain one of the top 10 women are simply boring, unless you're a fan of a particular player taking part.

I think the reason people on this board prefer WTA is because of the bitchy nature of women, it can be viewed as more of a soap opera with long running rivalries and arguments.

The answer is simple. Even a little baby swaddled away in a barn in Bethlehem could answer it. The WTA is better because it has the lil kirilenko, the tantalizing tatiana and the mashamator amongst countless others. They have skill, looks, and play the game at a more watchable pace.

if i have the choice of watching a match between the crotch picker Hewitt and the ass picker Nadal I am watching the WTA match. no question.

As an English major you should know that the rule is: either/or; neither/nor. Plus, neither IS, not neither are.

Anyway, I think it's a shame that there are some tennis fans who prefer the WTA simply because they like that the women are more "bitchey" with each other. That's so sad. Such a stereotype.

I prefer the ATP because of the all around better tennis, especially in the early rounds. I only watch womens' matches in the later rounds because that's when it gets exciting. Judging from my visits to tournaments, a lot of people feel the same. Over the years, I've visited Key Biscayne or the U.S. Open always in the early rounds (it's the best time, really) and I notice the stands are full when the men play (especially Agassi or Roddick) and they seem to clear out when the womens' match comes on. In the later rounds, the crowd is about equal, but the early rounds tell another story.

Miranda Lou if you had seen the incomplete sentence the neither/nor thing is minor.
I agree with you re the women's matches. No one gives a crap about the early round UE and moonball fests the women present. The mens matches on the other hand are great from day one. I go to the Open every year about Labor Day because that is a transition time and there are good matches to be seen by both the men and the women.
Re the attendance at WTA events, the YEC only highlights what you said. Right now the ATP has the better product and not even the return of the bitch queen will help the WTA right now. The best thing for the WTA is for Venus, Serena, Lindsay and Kim to be healthy in 2006. Venus and Serena will bring the level of tennis back to what it was a couple of years ago.
