It was said that on Austraila T.V. that they spoke about it. They said that she's asked for a wild card for the open. I'll believe it when I see her in the draw.

If it were true there would be articles up about it.
I searched Google News and all I found was the ton of recent "will she return? won't she return?" articles.

So yeh, I doubt it is true.

Melbourne may open door for Hingis
By Leo Schlink for FOXNEWS
December 15, 2005

AUSTRALIAN Open officials remain optimistic Martina Hingis will use Road To The Open tournaments to prepare for a return to grand slam competition and four-time Melbourne Park champion Monica Seles could also be a factor at the January 16-29 grand slam

Sorry to be a downer, but I saw Monica at the Canadian Open and she was really skinny. I don't want her to take a WC and get hammered, so I hope that she's been practising and training since then, if it's true.

I would rather see Monica be awarded the wildcard. No doubt she will not be 100% fit or as fit as she was in 2001 or 2002 but this is her wish to come back to the world where she belongs. She knows perfectly well that she may be embarrassed by young players or some players she has been beating handily before. But she at least wants to play once or twice before she officially retires.

I would respect her decision. :)

Tennis
Seles may make tour comeback
By DIRECT
Dec 15, 2005, 19:00 GMT

Monica Seles, the former women\'s world number one, has admitted she is giving serious consideration to making a full-time return to the tennis tour.

Seles, still only 32 years old, retired from the tour in 2003 because of a serious foot injury.

However, she has always spoken of her desire to play again and she admitted today that her hopes could soon be fulfilled.

\'Right now I think I\'m in the decision stage of which way I\'m going to go,\' she said.

\'It\'s not easy because if I do come back, I want to come back at a high level. To play mediocre tennis, I would not want to go back. We\'ll see.\'

Seles dominated the ladies\' tour in the early 1990s and between 1989 and 2003 won an amazing 53 singles titles including nine grand slams.

Her career, and indeed her life, was almost cut short on April 30th 1993 when she was horrifically stabbed in the back while on court.

Thankfully, she recovered from her injuries but she was away from tennis until August 1995 and returned a shadow of her former brilliant self, despite winning 20 titles in eight years.

If Seles were to return to the tour, she would be the second former number one to make a comeback in a matter of weeks, following former teenage star Martina Hingis\' recent announcement of her intention to come out of self-imposed early retirement at the age of 25.

NEWS ARTICLEThursday December 15, 2005Tennis :: Darrell Halim

Seles now contemplating a return

In what is becoming a growing trend on the WTA Tour, nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles has hinted at a possible comeback to the professional circuit.

If a supposedly-fit Seles was to return, she will be joining fellow past Grand Slam champion Martina Hingis and former world number four Jelena Dokic in making a comeback to the professional tour.

In her career, Seles won the Australian Open four times, the French Open three times and the US Open twice, but if a comeback is made, she has suggested that it would not be a full-time commitment.

At 32, Seles appears to understand the difficulty of making a successful comeback, acknowledging the higher level of play women’s tennis is at today, compared to her glory years in the early 1990s.

“The ball is being hit harder and harder, and the girls are much more complete players than they used to be. Physically stronger,” said Seles in an interview after being introduced to reporters as the 42nd member of the Laureus World Sports Academy – a charitable foundation that makes the most of sport’s role in the world by assisting disadvantaged children.

“I think I probably was one of the earliest to start it,” she added. “I was one of a few players that brought on this power game and they’ve taken it to a new level.”

Seles went even further by discussing the more delicate issue of grunting on the women’s tour, a trend that she almost single0handedly introduced.

“Everybody is now doing it. It’s like normal now. Seeing women play such aggressive tennis is really great.”

After finishing her last injury-plagued season on the WTA Tour with her first non-top 10 ranking since 1988, Seles is reportedly feeling better and will be keeping a close eye on the progress of Hingis’ return.

As for which Grand Slam she would aim for, Seles declared, “I love the Australian and the US Open.”

There is no doubt that this affection is shared by the Australian public and that the organiser and fans of the Australian Open would welcome Seles back with open arms if, or when, she decides to return to the highest level of the sport she is having trouble letting go of.

As the Yugoslav-born American put simply, “We’ll see.”

I was thinking the same thing!

Having just looked at the Getty pics referred to in another post topic on here, I personally would put money on there being no return - at least in Australia. Monica looks thin in the new pics compared to her playing days. Very thin - particularly bearing in mind a camera adds weight. Monica looks like she has been dieting, not working out.

Sometimes some news comes out which builds my hopes up - and some posters post things like this wildcard rumour, but I think Monica looks like a retired player now throwing herself into a new life. The new thin Monica, new hair, make up etc. just says it all to me. Good for her if she's happy but sad for Monica fans who dreamed of a return.

The new thin Monica, new hair, make up etc. just says it all to me. Good for her if she's happy but sad for Monica fans who dreamed of a return.

On the contrary, the 'new thin Monica' says the exact opposite to me. And, with respect (because you sound like a fan), the older a player gets, the thinner s/he has to be to be able to compete at the highest levels.

At one point late in her career, Chris Evert entered the US Open looking almost painfully thin...commentators like Tony Trabert and Virginia Wade speculated that perhaps she was so thin that it might rob her of her vaunted stamina. Despte a bout of food poisoning during the tournament, Chris went on to win her sixth US Open fairly comfortably. Afterward, tennis great Pancho Gonzalez said he told Chris that she now realised how thin she had to be to win as she got older.

So, Monica is heading in the right direction, in my opinion. Whether that translates into any results (or even any comeback at all) remains to be seen. But I for one am delighted that she seems to be taking the weight off, as it was likely a major contributing factor to the foot injury in the first place. Her power was the result more of practice and brilliant timing than of innate physical strength.

Go Monica!

I doubt this is true.

I've been following the news relating to the Australian summer very closely with Martina coming back, and there is nothing saying that Monica has "asked for a wildcard". There is speculation that she may return, but nothing solid i'm afraid.
