View Full Version : Is this the way it's going to be with the Williams sisters until they quit tennis?

They aren't my favourite players by any stretch of the imagination but I was wondering if the Willi's will ever play the same tournaments? The reason their matches usually suck is because they don't play against each other often enough. If they played each other 5 or 6 times a year then they would finally forget they're sisters and get out there and try to blow each other off the court. Getting new doubles partners wouldn't help either. It's ridiculous that they don't enter the same tournaments. The whole sisterly thing and not wanting to beat each other is such a dumb and boring excuse.

Hey leave the Sisters alone! :fiery: What I want them to do is, play two different tournies at the same time. Thus, winning two tournies each and every week.

From Toineefa:
If they played each other 5 or 6 times a year then ...
That's exactly what they are doing (at least intend to do), Toineefa:
- 4 Slams
- Miami
- Rome
- maybe more

I'm sure you didn't think it through. That's OK. Keep on posting; you're among WTA fans (friends) here.

LOL, I'm sure Serena didn't love thrashing Venus the other week ;).

Toineefa :), not sure I'd phrase it quite the way you did, but I also think that if they played each other more often in lesser tournaments they'd have much less difficulty performing on the bigger stages. Then maybe those irritating allegations of match fixing would fade away.

Can't see it happening though for exactly the reason HEAVYHITTER :) pointed out.

Can't say I blame them either.

Toineefa - The answer to your question is yes. Here's why.

Measured against their relationship to each other, tennis is literally unimportant to Venus and Serena. They're sisters, best friends, are only a year apart in age, are in the same profession (twice) and live together.

And both of them are VERY aggressive on the court. Usually. Not against each other. Public aggression is aimed at people NOT named Williams. More to the point, they don't view this as a problem. They've presented a united front to the world all their lives and I'm sure the idea of changing crosses their minds only rarely. I'm sure they fight. But not where other people can see them. Well, without their aggression, neither of them is all that great. Maybe top 20 players, but not top five.

So when they play each other, we get an off day from both.

Even when I disagree with Volcana he sounds brilliant.

So what you're saying is that until they quit the game tennis fans alike are going to have sit through one lousy match after another between the Willi's? Considering how astronomical the prices are for tickets (and they will rise) I think it's unfair that we have to pay to see a match between two players who won't be able to perform up to ability because they are related. I wonder if the Willi's even care about that fact. Maybe the Willi's should give tennis fans discounts to their matches by paying for half of their tickets. It's the least they can do since they know they won't be giving us a fiercely played match.

I think its a credit to the sisters for putting their relationship over tennis, which is just a sport.
And if tickets for their match should be half price then tickets for every lousy match where a player doesnt play well should be half price too. Or maybe every time someone retires everyone should get a refund? This thread is lame

did anyone force you to go to their matches?

I don't think you'd pay for a Williams-Williams Final so why do you care.?

It makes absoultely no sense for them to play in the same tournaments other than the big ones whether they are sisters or first cousins ......as long as they have the goal of being No1 and No2 in the world .....playing different tournaments is the way to go ..if they played the same tournaments then they'd both be resting at the same time while their rivals would be racking up points in williamsless tournaments and Venus and Serena would simply be getting in each others way since they both can't win the same event ....there are enough tournaments for them to complete their schedule and not enter more than a handful of tournaments together .....just as an example consider '2000 American Hardcourt season ' Venus wins Bank of west ,Accura, and Pilot pen , Serena wins Manhattan Beach and is in the final of the canadian (she lost ..but obviously had a chance to win by being there) ..if serena had played same tournaments as Venus then only one of them could win and a rival would have won Manhattan beach and another rival would have been in the Canadian final , and they might have knocked each other out in QF rounds.......top players rarely play more than 2 or 3 tournaments in a row speicially if they're the ones in the finals ...so what be the point of them resting at the same time....it hurts them points wise and financially and reduces the no of titles both can win in the course of their career......if they ever do become 1and 2 and will be placed on opposite sides of the draw in every tournament it still wouldn't be logical to play the same tournaments ...but for the companionship it might be worthwhile.

Brian is that the reason why? It's because they both want to move up in the ranking so they avoid playing each other? I think that's ludicrous.

Heavyhitter you obviously don't care about the role of the tennis fan. Just as long your favourites win you don't care if they play awful matches against each other. These matches are so bad because it is so obvious that they're aren't playing up to their ability. They're acting like such babies about it. They should be mature enough to realise that just because one sister beats the other doesn't mean that the sister who won doesn't love the sister who lost. The Willi's are such Neanderthals to think like that.

The whole sisterly thing and not wanting to beat each other is such a dumb and boring excuse.

Some who have siblings ( or other loved ones whom they share a good or at least half way decent relationship with) can understand where Venus and Serena are coming from:)

That said... still awaiting the day when their matches will be more competitive :bounce:

Shine on Venus & Serena Williams..

Why didn't Richard prepare these girls for competing against each other? They've been on tour long enough so you'd think the Willi's would realise that when they play each other it attracts many people so they just should play their best but all they give us are half hearted efforts.

I think theres a very good chance of Vee and Rena ending the year #1 and #2 though I wouldnt necesarily say Venus will be that #1, serena has a good shot at that spot too.

Really whose knows (on this board anyway) whether or not Mr. Williams tried to prepare them against each other? I would imagine that he gave it his best shot. Some things, (things that are in the heart ) even daddy can not come between.

Have no fear... THE BEST IS YET TO COME...
