I'm so happy!!

I think this match shows that Venus can play on clay, and she can beat top players on clay as well!!

I think that after seeing that Venus defeated Martina and Justine, 2 very good clay courters, I can put Venus down as a serious RG contender...

Congrats Venus! This win proves that Venus CAN play on clay, and deserves to be called the best in tennis right now...And I have to say she's a very serious contender at Roland Garros...

;) Let me get this straight...Venus can't play on "clay" and she'll never get past a "clay specialist" like ASV...

Well, she'll never get past Martina, one of the best on "clay"...

Countess, Hingis has not won RG, so why is your mind should Venus in order to be labled a good clay courter have to win it?

Personally this straight set win, imho was telling. Venus is great on clay, and the scary part is, she can still improve wth her tennis.:)

FEARLESS VENUS RULEZ!!!:D

Yeah... that's right Dawn...

Venus has defeated:

Paola
Justine
Martina
Justine

on clay this season... that is really impressive so far... :D

She is 8-0 on clay this season, and surely, with this kind of record, she has got to be a favourite at RG... :D

PS: Not to worry Martians, this is Martina's first clay tourny, she needs time to warm-up...

Yes, Countess, maybe only RG winners can be called queens of clay.

So, for now, the Great VENUS may be called the Countess of Clay!

Bye bye. :wavey:

Congratulations to Venus :), she must have played well.

Commiserations Martina, but I'm sure she'll get her revenge sooner or later :).

IMHO, this is Venus' biggest scalp on clay by some margin although her victory over ASV ranks a close second.

NO. She can never be a countess like me;)

Lets just call her the "favourite" for Roland Garros at the present time.

I think that win over Justine is a much bigger win than the one over ASV...

Tennis-Williams sees off Hingis to reach Hamburg final

HAMBURG, Germany, May 4 (Reuters) - World number one and defending champion Venus Williams defeated Martina Hingis 7-5 6-3 in the semifinal of the WTA's Hamburg Cup on Saturday.

Showing no signs of the ankle injury that restricted her movement in the quarter-finals, the top-seeded Williams was never troubled after breaking serve in the opening game.

But both players struggled to find their best form or stamp any real authority on the match, a fact demonstrated by seven breaks of serve in the first set and another five in a row at the end of the 72-minute contest.

The American was able to exploit third seed Hingis's weak serve, while her greater mobility and reach always gave her the upper hand.

But Hingis refused to be overwhelmed, striking several fine winners down the line in the second set to keep herself in contention.

Williams led the first set 5-3 but was broken to love, serving two consecutive double-faults as Hingis levelled at 5-5.

But a weak backhand into the net gave Williams a break for 6-5 and this time she served out to love.

Hingis was immediately in trouble in the second set, broken to love in the opening game, and Williams broke again to lead 4-1 and virtually assure herself a place in the final for the second year running.

But the American faltered again when serving at 5-2 and eventually secured victory on her fourth match point.

Williams will play second seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium or fifth seeded Yugoslav Jelena Dokic in Sunday's final.

4 match points???

This indeed is a great win for Venus. well done venus.

I am sometimes perturbed when I hear people saying that venus or serena are not clay court players. For the past five years that I have been very closely following venus and serena's tennis career I have never heard them say they are not clay court players. ok, agreed - they haven't played that many clay court tournaments over the years; but that surely doesn't mean they are not good clay court players. Take Serena for example: she did not play any clay court match before the french open last year but still got to the quarter finals and lost what I thought was a very very close match to the eventual winner.

Perhaps someone should try to work out exactly how many clay court matches have venus and serena played since they turned professionals and find out what the win:loss ratio is.

Anyway, well done venus and good luck in the finals tomorrow!

The Countess of Clay is part American Indian, so scalping is a tradition. :p

VENUS will acquire many more scalps at the upcoming GS events as well.

fantastic win. watch out Roland Garros! i'm not sure that Crappy will be able to retain her title if Venus' clay game keeps improving like this. a most important win.

I don't agree with you Williams_Rulez - not because I think that ASV is a better player than Justine these days, more because Venus has a history of struggling against ASV - she had difficulty at the Olympics and more importantly who can forget ASV's dismissal of Venus in Paris 2000 on clay ? Those matches were some time ago, but they're clearly still relevant seeing that Venus still needed 3 sets to win this week.

Venus vs. Justine on the other hand, well, whilst I completely rate Justine's game after Amelia island, I still don't think she's got what it takes to mentally overpower Venus, Serena or even Monica. More importantly, I'm not sure Justine thinks it either.

Only time will tell.

As for Venus at upcoming GS events Tee Rexx, for a change I agree with you ... although now without a doubt hers is the scalp to claim in Paris. I wonder if anyone can do it ?

Okay, you biggest scalp for THIS YEAR. Henin might say differently, i think.

I had a DEAL with Marti's fans not to make any excuses:bounce:
So far the only one i have heard is the "it's only her 3rd match on clay this season", never mind she has played well in her previous matches, and having had the BEST clay court preparation on tour. After all, she skipped the Green clay tournies to TRAIN hard and be fresh:bounce:

Long live the QUEEN!!!

As for scalping at Roland Garos, VENUS will keep her hair and put her collected scalps in the RG trophy. :)

Well Kart, it is true that ASV has been playing well again recently, on clay. But after Justine gave Venus a 6-1 6-4 trashing on clay last year, I thought that Justine was surely more dangerous than ASV on clay to Venus, so imho, I think Justine is a bigger scalp.

However, if we factor in mental strength or mental blocks for that matter, then you do have a point. ASV is in no way intimidated...

Congrats to all you Williams fans out there!!:bounce:

she has got to be a favourite at RG...
Yeh, but I also thought that last year. You never know what will happen. Look at Martina last year at Wimbledon. She lost in the first round and not even because her oppenent was better....

anyways, I hope for you guys Venus wins Hamburg and does well at RG!!! :bounce: :bounce:

But as the #1 player in the world, she would've been considered a serious contender regardless.
