What's so funny?

If you think it's unrealistic for Mary to be number one then you obviously are new to tennis. Not to mention, Mauresmo's YEC win will give her the confidence to have a great year next year, and I think she will probably hold number one for a couple of weeks in the middle of the year. Lindsay will probably win a slam next year but won't be as fit as Mary or Amelie and won't be able to play as many tournaments as them. Kim fails to repeat of the amazing year she had last year but still has a decent season and ends up in the top five. Patty will be starting the year at number six, mind you. One spot behind Mary Pierce. Some great results early in Australia could put her in the top five. She always plays so well at the Australian Open. And if she can keep up the consistency she showed last year... Venus remains a threat to the top five but is unable to keep great form from tournament to tournament. She will have an amazing run to the U.S.Open final late in the season, followed up by a YEC victory. Elena finally shows us her potential and wins a slam...the French Open. This victory spurs her into the top five but she loses some ground in the grass season and in the early American-hardcourt season. However, a late title at Moscow is enough to salvage the rest if her year and book her place in Madrid. Nadia I predict will have an off-and-on year, like Venus. Except she won't make the finals of a Grand Slam. I think that semifinal showings at the French and at Wimbledon will be in the future. She will also win a couple of titles next year and pose a threat to the very top players in the game. Maria will have a horrid season next year. With the return of Capriati and Hingis, players that she doesn't match up well with, she will be making a surprise early exit from Gold Coast to Hingis. She only make one Slam semifinal the whole year, at Wimbledon. Injuries also keep her from performing at the highest level. Myskina will dominate early in the season. With titles in Dubai and Doha, she would look to be a top eight seed at the French Open. A quarterfinal showing in Paris isn't enough for her. She has a much better year this year than last year. She reaches number 6 next year but will fail to win in her usually best season, the indoor season. Some bad results there kick her out of the YEC but she is still able to stay inside the top ten.

Speaking of unrealistic, all the posters who happen to have Maria as number one.
She'll have to do two things. Win a slam and prevent Kim from winning 6-10 tournaments. How to prevent Kim from winning tournis? Well by beating her. Ain't happening. I don't even like Kim and I know she'll still at least win 6 tournis next year.

In every top ten list above, I'm sure you will find a few things that you may be doubtful about or not agree with. I'm sure the list you'll only agree with completely is the list that you made so no point in singling out people who have put Maria as number one. Actually if you ask me there are more things listed above that I woud consider to be more unlikely than Maria ending next season as number one but these are just people's predictions...so ...

check out people's predictions last year...they are very different from the current top ten...mostly no kim and mary...more of serena...and well a lot of maria too...at the top...hehe...

My feelings are exactly opposite. I'd be surprised to see either of the Williams sisters in the Top 10 one year from now. Injuries plus lack of motivation are the reasons. Of the two, I think Venus has the better chance of staying near the top of the game. I have nothing against the sisters. I'd like to see both of them do well, but my gut feeling is that they are fading.

A lot of people thought Clijsters would take over after winning the U.S. Open.

Three semis out of three slams, but no 2nd slam.
