Lindsay  :banghead: :help:
If you cannot beat an 81-year old over the hill US president in an exchange of volleys at the net, perhaps you should retire from the WTA tour. :tape: :smash:

Evert Tennis Classic raises $1.2 million
Tennis legend Chris Evert teamed with her good friend former President George H.W. Bush to outlast recording star Michael W. Smith and world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport 6-4 in the highlight match at the Chris Evert/Bank of America Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic on Sunday at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Bush was among the many celebrities and tennis stars who helped Evert raise a record-tying $1.2 million to fight drug abuse in South Florida.

The event, which is held in association with the Chris Evert Children's Hospital at Broward General Medical Center, has raised more than $14.2 million in 16 years. Chris Evert Charities partners with the Ounce of Prevention Fund of Florida to support innovative and preemptive drug abuse programs.

"I'm so happy with this year's event," Evert said. "It is amazing to raise this much money for the second year in a row. This will help support programs that give people a second chance and most importantly, give them hope."

Bush was the crowd favorite as the agile 81-year-old battled at the net with Davenport, with the former President winning both of those showdowns. At other times, Evert joked that she was covering her three-fourths of the court as Bush let her chase down the opponents' lobs and drop shots. "It's hard work being your partner," said Evert. Chair umpire Bud Collins responded, "the Secretary of State never complained."

Evert closed out the day teaming with actor Scott Foley for a 6-4 win over Luke Jensen and Jon Lovitz of "Saturday Night Live" fame. "Dual-hand Luke" served both left and right-handed during a win earlier in the day when he and Justin Gimelstob downed Murphy Jensen and Nicole Vaidisova 6-4.

Stone Phillips, anchor of "NBC Dateline," and Gimelstob were too strong for Smith and Luke Jensen in a match that featured two of the event's best celebrity players. Phillips and Gimelstob paired up for the 6-5 (5) win.

Supermodel Frederique and French tennis star Sebastien Grosjean opened the day with a 6-4 win over ATP star Vince Spadea and actress Maeve Quinlan.

In addition to the tennis events, the celebrities were out in force on Saturday night for Evert's annual black tie gala at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Prior to a high-energy show by Canadian music superstar Corey Hart, a live auction raised more than $280,000 of the weekend's total.

The top item in the live auction was dinner for six at Evert's home with husband and co-host Andy Mill serving up a barbeque dinner. Two dinner packages were sold at $50,000 each.

Evert made a bid for more than an auction item at Saturday's gala, she is making a run for most popular mom in Boca Raton. Evert bought a lunch with tennis star Anna Kournikova for $10,000 for her three sons, which earned her a high five from her kids during Saturday evening's gala. Other top items included a private jet for $15,000, a lunch with Donald Trump for $11,500 and a tour of fashion week with Frederique for $7,500.

Event highlights will be televised on ESPN2 on January 27 at 12:30 a.m. EST (9:30 p.m. PST on Jan. 26).

Michael kept singing "coz friends are friends forvever" every time he received a serve. unfortunately his voice couldn't keep that ball from coming over the net.

unfortunately he didn't have a plan B

oh cmon. She probably would have been thrown out the country by president Bush if she had played anything above 0.05%, seen as the old 81yr old is his father!

The one thing that's always struck me about Lindsay is that she is, if nothing else, a very fair person in terms of her views. She's probably a moderate.

I think she really wanted to be tax free for the next few years. After all, she only earns some couple of millions a year.

The best part about Chris Evert's commentating is when she's talking about herself. I remember, maybe 5 years ago, she's calling a match with some guy I didn't recognize and somehow, Althea Gibson came up. Chris was saying how she made a final of a tournament in Florida once when the other lady had to pull out with an injury. They didn't want to disappoint the crowd and Gibson was either down there visiting someone or was living there then, so she agreed to play Chris in the final. Chris says, "She actually thought she could beat me with that big serve of hers." Followed by a few second of silence, the guys asks, "Did she beat you." All haughty and almost laughing, "Of course not!" Then turning very formal and serious, "But I let her win a few games."

I read an interview that Lindsay gave before the last presidential election in the states and she said that her and her family are huge republicans but she also said at the time that she was probably not going to vote because she couldn't see the sense in the war. Please say the people that are shocked by this loss are only pretending to be, its only a bit of fun.

I remeber her saying that!

I liked it even more because Althea at her age didn't give a rats
ass who and what Chrissy was, she talked like she knew
her serve could kick her ass!

I love that kinda thing between
two players!

I remember that too:lol: But it wasn't as arrogant as it sounded.

She said that the girl she was supposed to play in the final pulled out and Althea stepped in to play in an exhibition match. Evert said "You know, it was amazing, even in her 50s, she had still that huge serve and her groundstrokes were so tough for me to read." Dick Enberg sounded amazed and said "Really?" She just laughed and said "No, of course not. My God. I mean, I gave her games just like I hope the top players on tour today would give me games."
