from #5 SCG player to #11 Aussie!

What will happen if she changes her mind again!

she joins her fellow naturalised Serbs- Dragana Jakovljevic, Branka Savic as well as other Ex-Yugoslavians: Beti Sekulovski, Dubravka Cupac, Julija Dziedzic, Bojana Bobusic, Andrea Lipovska and Dijana Srbinoska! and Dominikovic sisters

pathetic statistics really, almost 1/2 of Aussies ranked players are naturalised!

Most of those players including Cupac, Sekulovski and the Dominikovic sisters were born in Australia. They are not naturalised Aussies as you so put it (just like me, born in Australia to Greek parents, and I consider myself Australian).

yes the Australian Tennis Federation just decided to set it sights on these former Yugoslavian players. It had nothing to do with the fact that their parents wanted to avoid being blown up or ethnically cleansed

it still pathetic for a country that big to have 2/3 of it's ranked players that are other origin. That means they cannot produce it's own players, but have to look in greek/polish/serbian/croat/macedonian communities !!!!!!! And for someone to be an actual citizen it usually counts three generations to be born in that country so if anyone of these players grandparents are born there, then ok!

Yeh Australia has a pretty small population. Most of Australia is unlivable desert.
& yes, like the poster above said, you are just bitter.
It's obvious Jelena is much happier so you should be happy for her. If you only liked her cause she was a fellow countrywoman then that says alot.

That's a load of bull - most players were born in Australia, even if they have the background of Yugoslavian or whatever... so we didn't "take" then from somewhere, their parents or grandparents MOVED HERE of their own accord.

Dude - Australia is only just over 200 years old - what the hell do you expect? in say 220 years (we're not even quite there yet, but anyway)...that can be just 3-4 generations of people anyway! And btw, you DO NOT need 3 generations to become a citizen of a country. I as born in Australia, my PARENTS were naturalised, but I was born here, and have always been Australian. I could go live in NL and become Dutch if I so wanted (as it happens, I may) and I can still become a CITIZEN...stop talking crap! And if these players are growing up in Australia, then how the hell are we NOT producing them? They ar learning the game here, we are funding them, but somehow it's the Serbian nationality or the Yugoslavian nationality that made then tennis players? :haha: Sure mate...

it doesnt matter what background these players are..they play for Australia because thats where they have been taught to play tennis for most of, if not all of their years tennis careers. so you cant say that australia cant produce quality players because these girls have been coached by australians and developed by tennis australia.

that has to be one of the most moronic posts i've ever read on this board (and that is saying a lot). Don't pull some archaic definition of citizenship that they probably used in the former Soviet Union to help win your argument - that is not Australia. Unlike some countries we've have developed in the last 50 years into an extremely multi-cultural society and the fact that we have so many girls with roots from the former Yugoslavia representing us reflects poorly on your country, not mine.

SpikeyAidanm

Did you not read my post

OK, let's highlight all the 'foreign' sounding names of Australian players, and let's call them 'non Australian'. Never mind the fact that they were actually born here and probably consider themselves every bit as Australian as Bob Smith next door.

I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. If you call them un-Australian just because their surname is different, then you are calling me un-Australian, and I take strong offence to that. Moron.

are they pure Australians!!!!!! Don't think so!

By this then the USA should (or should have) disown(ed) Sampras who's Greek origin, Agassi who's dad is Iranian (oh and if his and Steffi's child becomes a tour player then cast him/her aside as well), Mary Jo Fernandez who's from the Dominican Republic, Jennifer Capriati who's got Italian blood.....

Do you actually know anything about these players, how long they've been in the country, their family history or did you just randomly check the WTAtour rankings and dragged off names (you left some off by the way!)

Yes, we have really done well to scoure the planet and drag the likes of Dragana Jakovljevic and her pals by the hair, kicking and screaming, totally against their will from their country of origin to fulfill Australian tennis stocks. (who btw are setting the worldon fire

How about realising that these girls and their families actually live in a country that gives them choice and the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of being a professional tennis player. Nah thats too hard isn't it ;)

 Yes, including Tiffany Welford who is half Indonesian, and was born in Jakarta! But she has an Anglo surname, so it's OK. Ditto Christina Wheeler who moved to Oz from the Ukraine about 15 years ago and had the family name changed. Just goes to show, how diligent this poster's research is.

Come to think of it, maybe we should send Alicia Molik back to her ancestral homeland of Poland.

 Well by this we are all ex-convicts and pillage any overseas talent (I use that term loosely :D ) that we can, so only good ole Evonne Goolagong is our only former (and maybe soon-to-be current) player

yes,m because Australia really is a land of migrants... so? The other half of the AUssie players would probably have European or Asian backgrounds too...

:worship: :yeah:

I was goin to say the same thing! I was born in Australian to Italian parents but I consider myself Australian!

Yeah, Australia is totally represented by Wogs in so many sports - I mean we took them to Soccerr World Cup 4 the first time in 37 yrs.
The only sport that has "true-aussie blood" is footy and cricket two of the most boring, ridiculous, untalented stupid sports that are only played in Australia and few other desperate countries.

I dont care if Dokic plays for Aus - I mean I'm glad she is - but at the end of the day she is a hardcore Serb - she's got daddy's blood in her vains - you dont just lose that.
(eh nes mi Australke iz Fruske Gore - stvarno lol).

JD is playing 4 Australia coz she's being a drama queen - she could play for SCG if she wanted to - she could base her self in Australia and represent SCG but its her choice to switch nationalities so I dont really give a damn what she does n e more (I like my babies Jeca Janko and Ancica) - Dokic can do what she wants - I'm not her fan n e more - but I also dont dislike her either. She's like Anna Smashnova to me - just another tennis player that I dont have n e feelings (bad or good) for.

the bottom line is Australia is immensly represented by Wogs - and yet we face constant racism and other issues - but I mean Australia is still an amazing country for young athletes - they're given numeous opportunities to achieve.
NOW - just because you are given these chances does not automaticly mean that YOU MUST rep. Aus. in your choosen sport - its a free country so you can choose but ofcourse ethics and morals play a big part.

But I just know that my daughter will start playing for Australia - then we'll switch to SCG -ofcourse it will be up to her - I will not push her - but I will teach her about her roots and where her grandparents come form and ask her if she wants to play for SCG - but ofcourse I wont push her - but we'll most likely represent Serbia.
(is it too early for me to be planing my kids life - LOL)

The bottom line is Dule has a point - but the fact is that 1 in 4 Australians is either from another country, or has a parent or a grand parent from another country, or is only second generation Australian. So we have a MASSIVE multicultural society and its enevitable that we'll have ethnic atheltes - but at the end of the day we're all Aussies - lol.

Just wondering, what is the origins of Sam Stosur? Stosur seems quite a unique name... Could it be another Slavic surname, anglicised?

from #5 SCG player to #11 Aussie!

Not really when you think about it most Aussies and Americans for that matter are nationalised newly and I believe it is only fair ...... you belong where you grew up, went to school, made friends where you consider home.....Do you really think Martina Navratilova considers herseld Scheck, and she only became American as an adult!!!!!
Do you really think that Tati is Russian, for me she is very much french....Even Maria Sharapova is more American than she is Russian, I bet you anything she is more comfy thinking in english than she is in Russian...

the bottom line is Australia is immensly represented by Wogs - and yet we face constant racism and other issues
i think this is the only reason why it's really important what your origins are. it would be unfair to single out australia for this, australians at least don't deny they are a country of immigrants, but still, in all these countries immigrants of certain origin face discrimintion and racism, yet when some of them become successful in sports they are all of a sudden considered australians, austrians etc. that does not sound quite fair to me.

i think that people should be able to identify with the country they live in, even if they are not good at sports, but i know that in most of europe by most people you will be considered a "proper" citizen of a certain country only if you are a third generation immigrant, and sometimes not even then. that definition does not come from the soviet union, it exists in minds of most europeans and while traditional immigrant countries are better in this regard it is no secret that racism and discrimination exist even there. so, if there is some bitterness in all this, i think there is more than one reason for that.

i'm fairly neutral in this though. i never was a dokic fan and never will be, and if she really feels she is australian, that's alright, but i have the impression there are some other factors at play as well.

Well i received comments about how ignorant i'm of Australia, and if someone is born in one country is 100% Australian. So let's say Huanita Suarez-Gonzales is born in let's say Iceland! It's the name that makes her Mexican or any other Latin/spanish origin! It's your ignorance really-comparing Ex-yugoslavia to Soviet Union- if you learned anything yugoslavia was not a part of Cold-war thing! Your media made you believe everything bad comes from Communism. But did they tell you about bad things of McDonalds or other pro-western thing. So how can you aussies even call a serbian origin person an Australian and respect them when you all put them in the same basket of Soviet-Union. It's your ignorance to see further then one-dimensional things!
When you go on the street and ask someone does Milica Petrovic sounds Aussie-he'll say-yes!!!! Of course not! You are just so ignorant! From a proof with ranking you made a disscussion! How can you respect someone if you don't know where he/she or her/his family is and comes from. And the attacks i'm mad that Dokic left SCG is absolutely not true. You Aussie guys don't even care for anyone as long it plays unedr your flag-which sounds rather imperialistic!

and most of you attacked Jelena when she left Australia- and now you embrace her with open arms, and smiles-that's pathetic. And you would act the same if Molik left to play for any other country! And why would people in serbia like her at all after she gave a support to radical party, who made serbia in terrible postion and which leader is facing a Hague tribunal punishment! You call her an Aussie- well done for you, you are just sooo democratic!!!!!

gosh dule, you are really over reacting! I think aussies should be proud of their multi - cultural society and i'm sure those player from different ethnic backgrounds don't think they are being exploited, they consider themself australians and they have the same opportunity to play the sport they are good at as every other australian with anglo saxon sounding name...
I wonder do you consider monica seles serbian or hungarian or american, though...

i am sad jelena is not representing serbia anymore, but if that is what she truly wants - good for her!

Well, it IS somewhat strange that she considers herself a fullblown Australian having spent only six years of her life there, between the age of 12-18. But it's her choice in the end and considering that her carreer is pretty much over anyway as it is, the issue of who she's going to represent is a purely academic one...

Molik, Adamczak, Lukaszewicz, Dziedzic and Wlodarczak are polish. Molik parents lived in Poland but Alicia was born in Australia but she knows polish words :)

Similarly and unfortunately for you, they have yet to make one for coherence. Your arguments are logically bankrupt and your rambling does nothing other than make you seem like a deranged individual. Perhaps when you can formulate something that is not completely irrelevant and devoid of any logic people will start to take you seriously.

There's actually a notable reason for that, though I seriously don't expect you to understand the logic behind it.
