I think you underestimate how much someone like Maria probably appreciates her true, die-hard fans. And to be honest, looking at all of the English sites for Maria, how many people would say that Makiri is clearly their favorite woman tennis player, not a favorite, but the favorite? My take is you would not have to use much more than your fingers and toes to count them all. Makiri probably has more fans that would say Big Maria comes first, and yes I follow Makiri as well cause she is Big Maria's cute, little friend.

Yeah... No offense... but I knew a followed to death Maria Sharapova before Kirilenko. I started following Kirilenko since like one year and a half.. But Sharapova is still my number one..

I believe the key to the success... Was consistency.. she played tournament after tournament... she tried and kept trying...

I started following Kirilenko since like one year and a half.. But Sharapova is still my number one.. Gasp, I now need one less finger or toe to count those that place Makiri as their #1 favorite. So when Big Maria plays Makiri Luis cheers for Big Maria, hmmm. This is off topic, but I dare not start a new thread on this. For me, Makiri is by far my #1, where the passion lies. I also root for "friends of Makiri", including Big Maria. And Michaella K too. Like you, many seem to have discovered Makiri at the French 2004. She got a lot of TV time with the Williams match.

I believe the key to the success... Was consistency.. she played tournament after tournament... she tried and kept trying...My recollection of 2005 is Makiri started slowly (January was not so hot), but she was coming off the late 2004 injury. Then she started rolling at Hyderabad and continued on strong during the spring through Warsaw. But then had a pretty tough summer, the losses to Jackson in Birmingham and New Haven being especially painful. I love Makiri, but objectively after Warsaw through the USO must have been a discouraging time for her. And I do recall her displaying some frustrations at New Haven or Toronto. But then she changed coaches, got more aggressive in her style and then caught fire after the USO. And her tour of Asia was nothing short of spectacular! Seems to me kind of an up and down year until she hit Asia. Good news is she does not have a lot of points to defend from the January tournaments, so a strong January this year will move her up in the rankings. She started 2005 at 111, as I recall moved up into the 60's/50s on the strength of her spring results, then rocketed into the 20s on her awesome Asia tour in the fall.

Maria is #2 for me...but I'd like her regardless of whether she was big Maria's friend.

I think Maria had a great finish to the year...there were signs earlier in the year that she was finding some good form, with wins over Bovina and Schnyder then the run at Indian Wells. Hopefully next year with the confidence she gained with her 1st title she can go on with it. Her progression with her Doubles play this year was also great.

Indeed her doubles matches have helped her in certain way. I have noticed that her game is a little bit weak on power, but doubles mind set's advantage is that evne though she is not a heavy striker... she can still be offensive.

Walt, even thou Kirilenko isn't my number one favorite, doesn't mean I will cheer hfor her if she plays agaisnt Sharapova. Fanship is not about desiring perfect success, but satisfactory experiences.

:woohoo: Didn't want to take you for granted, but given your name and avitar... it would seem if you have Kirilenko in your name and Makiri as your avitar you are making a statement. So we have at least 4: Cecilia, Kirilenko#1fan, KirilenkoRulz (Walt), and I would bet Langers (Daniel). BTW, any Makiri fan is a friend of mine, whether she is #1 on the cheering list or #100. Just thought it fun to find out who on the forum considers Makiri to be their #1 favorite. My guess was that it is not a large number. That said Luis' passion for Makiri is second to none, and Dan's incredible support for her is awesome, and henner's posts wow...only with every member of the orchestra playing will we make beautiful music.

I agree with all that. Your posts are awesome. :)

You can call me Joao by the way. Luis and Derek already do so.

Thanks for diminishing my level of fanship... I made this thread, spend over an hour furnishing with statistics and other stuff.

Luis' passion for Makiri is second to noneAlthough I have said this in many posts over the past months, I am grateful to Luis for the time and energy he spent to work to create the Kirilenko Orchestra, we all enjoy the fruits of his labor. And as per posts #11, 13 and 16 above, Luis' 2005 Year in Review is absolutely awesome, I thank him. Peace.

That sounds very religious...

But indeed it isa good time. She is growing, and she is become much more of a better player. She should keep growing as well on ranking by next year... I am hoping she becomes top 15 player...
