This is not a bashing thread! I just want a name...

For me, it's Serena Williams.. I have no problem cheering for Venus but there is something about Serena that makes me cheer against her...

I feel the same, I think Serena is great but I always root against her because all of her opponents are like underdogs, it gives me great thrills when she loses. I know it's mean but it's true for me, but I think she is so funny and lovely as person.

Maria Sharapova. I don't have an issue with her game. I think she's a pretty good tennis player. I just had a feeling during the AO match when Sharapova played Serena. It was the first time I actually got nervous for Serena. That was when I knew I couldn't root for Maria.

Some people are just putting down players they don't like.

Unless it's one of my absolute favorites (Myskina, Dementieva, Clijsters, Molik) then I usually cheer for the underdog. That doesn't neccessarily mean who is ranked lower, as I'd consider Petrova an underdog to Serena anyday.

Some peeps make too big of a deal about disliking or rooting against certain players. I actually think it enhances the experience of being a spectator, you gotta have players you love to root against. Just like in other sports. Usually theres a team that you just hate for whatever reason. It's not hate in the true sense of the word, it's hate in the sports sense of the word. Sometimes watchin' a player you don't like lose can be almost as gratifying as watching your favorites win.

Early on I tried supporting Mauresmo, but I just couldn't get into her. She's one player that I tried to like but has actually ended up being one of the players I love to see lose. What's interesting is when you find yourself rooting for players you don't like, this usually happens when two players you don't like end up playing each other.

Players I love to root against:
Sharapova
Mauresmo
Capritatti
Justine
Hingis

-In the past if all these players had to play each other I would support JCap.
-I'm a Justine fan when she plays Maria
-I'm a Mauresmo fan when she plays Justine
-Now that Hingis is back and conisdered an under-dog I'm going to "try" to support her. I can definitely root for her against everyone on this list
-Although I don't mind watching my least favorite players lose early, especially in big tournaments, but honestly I prefer to see the best matchups. So I'm a Maria fan when she plays an absolute "nobody" and or some I don't have any feelings for one way or the other.

One last note, me not liking a player doesn't mean that I ever have a need to be nasty toward them in anyway. I try to be respectful of everybody and I don't have a problem throwing out compliments and praise for players I don't like. Just because I don't like them doesn't mean I don't respect them, or their fans.

There's no player that I can't cheer for, it's WHO I'm cheering for when they're playing a match  It's all relative to who is playing who. Much like Sir Stefwhit, it really depends who is playing who. If Amelie is playing Justine, I'll want Justine to win. If Amelie is playing Kim, I'll want Amelie to win. If Kim is playing Serena/Venus, I'll want Kim to win. If Serena/Venus are playing Amelie, I'll want Serena/Venus to win.

Lindsay usually, even though i think her game is amazing I can't stand watching her play for some reason.

Justine, I tried to like her because she was so good and smaller than everyone else but I just can't cheer for her.

Serena used to be, but now I want her to come back healthy and win.

Nadia P. She brings a negative vibe on court... She never seems happy, or acts funny, she's always frustrated with herself throwing a racket when she's n ot playing well. She is totally unattractive to watch because of that and I find her game not amusing either.

I'm also in the category where it depends which players are in a match. Sometimes I prefer one over the other, despite not being the slightest bit of a fan if the match is good. Other times a tv commentator will be so biased for one player that I find myself really annoyed. Usually if I can get so pissed, and cheering against one player that's still fun, and good. I'm feeling something, and totally into the match.

If I can't cheer for a player, and I'm very indifferent to either one, I usually change the tv channel, and not bother to watch at all.

I remember I used to find it impossible to cheer for Steffi Graf until the French Open '99 when I found myself shouting 'c'mon Steffi' after every point in her semi against Seles and then in the final against Hingis.

I had nothing personal against Graf but got very bored of her winning everything and beating everyone.

Hingis - I havent been able to cheer her since she won the AO in '97 but now she is coming back, perhaps I will be able to especially if she starts to show some more modesty now she is older.

Venus and Serena - been a while since I have been able to cheer them on. Their lack of humility makes it difficult to endear to them. However, I remember cheering Venus when she beat Hingis at Wimbledon 2000 because she was the underdog.

Dec 4th, 2005, 12:54 PM
There are players I'll never root for, so when they play I try to root for the opponent, but that's very difficult sometimes. For example...I want Serena to lose most of the times (unless she plays Maria or -it might happen again - Martina), but when she plays Amelie, I really can't push myself to be pumped up when momo is ahead.

Others besides Amelie: Lindsay, Nadia, Patty, Anastacia and Nathalie.

I just cant cheer for Davenport - she gives nothing back and irritates me with her little moods, no emotions or anything, i like players that show emotion

I've tried to like Elena Dementieva but her game just bugs me. Gorgeous groundstrokes but that horrible serve and then the unforced errors. Basically, it's her attitude that I don't really like - not her attitude on court where she generally does fight very hard - but the attitude off-court that makes her either not work on her weaknesses or not successfully do so. I don't feel as though she's ever going to change the fundamental problems in her game and I can't support someone like that.

Nadia Petrova - I quite like her game when it's on but every match I've seen of hers in a Slam, she's been unable to pull out a win over a top player and that bugs me to see constantly.

I have probably cheered for every single one of the current players at some point or another in their careers.

I started cheering against Serena and Venus when they were totally dominating, even though I never stopped loving them as people. :hearts::hearts: Then Venus went into her slide and I started to cheer for her again to get back where she belongs -- at or near the top. :)

Capriati's era of being cheered for by me was probably the shortest of anyone's :D. It happened at the very beginning of her amazing career revival, when she won the Aus Open; but I was rooting against her again by the time of Roland Garros!

And Kim's time ended forever many years ago, when the tiresome "she's so nice/she's a saint" business started to really get on my nerves. Even though I realize she really IS so nice, I just have to root against her! :D

I just can't root for the russian players. I always find myself rooting for the opponent of a russian player, and everytime a russian looses it makes me happy, even if they lost to another player I don't like (like the Williams Sisters). http://ads.tennisuniverse.com/wtaworld/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Besides of just disliking some players (like Sharapova and Myskina) I think it's because there are simply too many of them in high rankings, so I'm like "It doesn't hurt if they lose, I don't feel pity for them."

The ugly ones.

Extra credit for sincerity.

I used to be worse than I am now on that regard; back when I was young and foolish, if I happened to watch a match between two players I didn't know all that well, I rooted for the prettier one.

Nowadays, not really so. If none of my faves is playing, I root for whoever I feel is playing better.

But I still feel that maybe I should support Mauresmo more. She's one of the players whose game I find most enjoyable to watch, but sometimes I don't root for her.

How hard have you tried?

Mine is Mary Pierce. Off-court she couldn't be more charming. In victory or defeat, she always shows class and grace. I get the impression she's a wonderful person. I'd like to root for her. Then, when I watch her play I just can't stand her antics. It makes no sense; other players have their on-court quirks and routines and they don't bother me. Mary though.... watching her is like finger nails on a chalk board for me. I've tried, but I can't do it.

I can't cheer for Mauresmo (even if I'm french, her game is so boring!!)
Davenport (though I like her game, her moods..hm)
Henin Hardenne (she looks just too selfish!!)

Even in Fed Cup, I was rooting for Dementieva against Mauresmo and Pierce and also for Myskina against Mauresmo...though I would have been for the French team if Dechy had at least played the doubles : it would have been quite difficult to cheer the russian players and the french team...

Davenport. I wanted her to win the Aus Open this year, I really did. But, then i snapped, I couldn't take it anymore and I was like "C'mon Serena! You can do it!" Lindsay is devoid of any visible intensity. She just doesn't seem to care (I'm sure she does tho) win or lose! Oh! and her body language, puhlease. C'mon lindsay gimme SomEtHinG!!

Justine Henin-Hardenne - No comment :tape:

Maria Sharapova - Her dad annoys me

Lindsay Davenport - She's just too boring to watch.

All three are great players, but I just don't cheer for them.

I'll cheer for Lindsay if she's playing Justine or Maria and I'll cheer of Maria if she's playing Justine

Mary Pierce-I think she has a great game and her character/personality is so fun and entertaining to watch, but just can't seem to like her.

Kim. She's too bland. I can't find anything to get excited about with her. The personality, the defensive game, and the look. No fire there at all.

Daniela H. Too prissy, and gives off this weird vibe of entitlement. People try to put an underdog tag on her in matches, but I don't feel sorry for her at all.
