With all of the talk about Martina Hingis, I thought I would share a cool stat with you about her.

Martina has won five Grand Slams:

'97 Australian Open
'97 Wimbledon
'97 United States Open
'98 Australian Open
'99 Australian Open

In those five Grand Slam victories, she played only six Top Ten players:

'97 AO - Spirlea
'97 W - Novatna
'97 UO - Davenport
'98 AO - Pierce
'99 AO - Pierce, Seles

Some surprising things about her Slams are that she faced #17 Fernandez and #22 Pierce in the SF and F of the '97 AO. At the '97 Wimbledon, she faced #57 Chladkova and #42 Kournikova in the QF and SF. She faced #66 Venus Williams in the F of the '97 UO. At the '99 AO, she played #29 Mauresmo in the F of the AO. These are some terribly easy draws compared to later years where she would battled Venus, Seles, and S.Williams in the QF of Slams.

I think Monica Seles played incredibly during the summer of 2001 into 2002. She compiled a 54-11 (.831) from '01 Stanford to '02 Miami. Of her 11 losses, only one of them was to someone out of the Top Ten. She won 4 of 15 tournaments and defeated Hingis twice, Capriati, Serena, Venus, Kim, and Henin twice. She didn't make it to the SF of a tournament one time.

And only two before summer of 2002 . (plus only one before winter of 2001 when she wasn't too hot either BITTERNESS :p)

Elena Dementieva had a nearly identical winning percentage on her second serve points as Lindsay in her USO QF, and a better winning percentage on her second serve points than Mary in her USO Semi.

Well, she was fortunate since the draw opened up for her, but that's beyond her control... point to note is that in the slams that she won in 97 without playing many top 10 players, she didn't drop a set in reaching the finals. The only set she lost was to Novotna, no doubt the best grass court player at that time... she was in pretty good form, so had she played a top 10 player she'd probably have won as well, at most winning in 3 sets...

And the 'low ranked' Venus, Mauresmo and Pierce are considered elite players now...

Martina Hingis went 85-6 in her best 20 tournaments from '96 Chase Championships to '98 Australian Open.

Serena Williams was worse, with a 93-7 record in her best 20 tournaments from '01 Toronto to '03 Fed Cup.

#17 Fernandez, #22 Pierce, #66 Venus and #29 Mauresmo were all better players than their rankings indicated.

Was Venus Williams really only the 14th best player at Wimbledon last year? Of course not. She'd only been in the final four of the past five years.

Oh, and another cool Monica stat. She went 33-0 at the Australian Open before losing her first match there. No player in tennis history has won so many matches at a GS event before their first defeat (according to Tennis magazine. I wonder though, considering some of Lenglen's and Wills Moody's runs in the 1920s)
