Embattled tennis star Jelena Dokic has arrived in Melbourne confident of resurrecting her career as an Australian.

The former world No.4, whose ranking has slumped to 349th in the world, jetted in from Vienna on Saturday.

Dokic, who will attend a Tennis Australia camp at Melbourne Park next week, is chasing a wildcard entry for next month's Australian Open.

"I was a little bit nervous coming here," said Dokic, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2000.

"I'm even happier with my decision now.

"It will be tough, not everyone will agree with my decision.

"I'm really excited about coming here."

Dokic has not played in Australia since 2001 and is expected to compete at the Canberra International from January 6-13.

The 22-year-old dual passport holder has decided to turn her back on her birthplace of Serbia - and more particularly her father Damir - and realign herself with Australia after enduring a nightmare 2005 season.

----

Sounds like Jelena is in high spirits and I'm sure she is going to love seeing all her old friends again.
I do think with hard work these next few weeks, Jelena may have a great return.

ETA: Still looking for pics. Some are sure to turn up.

Dokic back to rebuild tennis career
www.smh.com.au

Former world No.4 Jelena Dokic has asked Australian sports fans for a little support and understanding in her bid to resurrect her career in Australia and says she has done nothing wrong.

Dokic, who flew in from Vienna, will attend a Tennis Australia camp next week at Melbourne Park in the hope of gaining a wildcard for next month's Australian Open.

"I don't think it was a sudden change. I wanted to (move here) two years ago," said Dokic, whose world ranking has slumped to 349th.

"I was ready to come here month before to get used of everything.

"It's not just come here two days before the tournament and say I'm an Australian and fit in here again, hopefully the people of Australia will understand that."

Dokic, who abandoned Australia in 2001 to play for Serbia and Montenegro, has been granted a wildcard entry into the Canberra International from January 6-13.

The 2000 Wimbledon semi-finalist, who has severed ties with her father Damir, says she is now capable of making decisions by herself.

"He's my father, he's family but he doesn't make my decisions anymore, I make my own. Yeah we've split and we don't agree on a lot of things," Dokic said.

"But that's passed and so I really have to look forward and go from here."

Following the lead of her father Damir at the time, Dokic vowed never to play in Australia again after claiming the 2001 Australian Open draw - when she played Lindsay Davenport in the first round - was rigged against her.

But she now insists winning back the support from the Australian public and fellow Australians on the WTA Tour are key priorities.

"I did not do anything wrong, the decisions weren't made by me," she said.

"Yes people will judge and say I did those things and that's why I'm back here, I wanted to show them I feel Australian and I grew up here and I really love to get the support I had before.

"I know that will take time, but I have nothing to regret, hopefully we can all look forward."

Wanting to make a fresh start, Dokic must wait another two years before she can represent Australia at Federation Cup level.

Stubbs said she still had mixed feelings about her old teammate's return.

"She owes a lot of apologies," she said. "Part of me is, like, 'Ah, give her a chance'. The other part of me is, 'You had your chance. You embarrassed your country that gave you so much and now you want back in when you have nowhere else to turn.

"We had a great opportunity to grow the game in Australia with her, Alicia (Molik), Sam (Stosur) and the experience of myself and Nicole (Pratt) helping guide women's tennis. And I feel that she disrupted that.

"And how coincidental that Molik is out and she wants back? So ironic."

omg Rennae:rolleyes: I usually think she's a riot, but that's just obnoxious...

I hope Jelena makes it back. She's showing that she really is serious with her intentions by participating in the camp and the wild card playoff. I mean how many former top 5 players would be willing to swallow their pride in the manner that she is doing now?

I hope she plays Auckland, Canberra, AO, and then the four challengers in Australia that take place in February and March. Hopefully by then she'll back inside the top 250.

She didn't live in Serbia to be able to leave it in first place, she lived in Zagreb and Monte Carlo. I don't know about Zagreb but Monte Carlo is definitely not considered a shit hole, not even by rigorous Aussie standards...

Anyway, no need to get all upset, the world no 349 is all yours now, with Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic it's not like we really need her anyway ;)

This is great news. I hope this will finally bring Jelena back to the top, that is where she belongs. And if you have the chance to be an Australian citizen, you should take it.
Best thing of all is that she seems to be determined to turn her back to her father, which seems like a sensible thing to do. I think that guy is responsible for her troubles.
WTA, Jelena! :D

Well, Ana is no Jelena Dokic who doesn't have a clue who or what she is, so don't hold your breath

In fact, Ana's father when denying the alleged switch to Switzerland, also revealed that Ana had been approached by only one tennis federation, not the Swiss but the Australian one, since Ana has some relatives in Australia.

Ana and her parents turned down their offer to represent Australia. This was before Ana's big breakthrough, but not everyone can be bought by money, a lesson learned the hard way by Australian tennis officials ;)

So, Ana is not only known as one of the most perspective girls on the tour, but also as the girl who gave the Aussies the finger

This has to be one of the most interesting stories to emerge on the eve of the 2006 season. Rennae Stubbs can be obnoxious and irritating but I can understand why she plus many Australian fans consider that Jelena betrayed their country when she announced she wished to play for Serbia Montenegro. However, everyone deserves to be given a second chance. The decision was made when Jelena was still a young girl living in the shadow of her father. He was evidently behind the decision and Jelena had little option but to go along with it at that stage of her life. She is now an adult and a player of immense natural talent. Whether she can recapture the form she displayed five or six years ago is highly doubtful but at least give the girl a chance!!

Dec 5th, 2005, 01:44 AM
I think you'll find the Australian public will welcome her back because we realise that it wasn't really her decision to go to Serbia but, rather, that froot loop father of hers that she now doesn't speak to.

I think the australian public's reaction to jelena will depend on her play. If she starts piling the error and looking like a robot with no will on the court, they will probably boo her. That would really surprise me cause she seems motivated again and just revived so Im pretty sure she will have a great attitude. If she starts pounding the ball again and hitting impressive winners all over the place, im sure they're gonna go wild cheering for her and welcome her back.

Dec 6th, 2005, 12:39 AM
This has to be the most interesting story to emerge on the eve of the 2006 season. Rennae Stubbs is often outspoken on many subjects and I'm far from being a fan of hers. I can understand why she and many other Australians regarded her decision to leave Australia in 2001 as a betrayal but Jelena was still a young girl at this time and her father was responsible for all of the major decisions in her tennis career. She is an adult now and has freed herself from the shackles of one of the most unsuitable tennis parents in the history of the sport...and that is saying something! Everyone deserves a second chance and why should Jelena be any different. Besides, with the sad decision of Alicia Molik to miss the 2006 season due to her physical problems, the erratic performances of Samantha Stosur and the lack of quality juniors coming through, Australia should welcome her back with open arms.

switz
Dec 6th, 2005, 12:42 AM
only a few tight arses will boo her. Australians are pretty forgiving by nature. Her results will only determine whether she becomes a star again.

robert6061
Dec 6th, 2005, 12:46 AM
I distinctly recall Becker being booed during a tempramental performance against home boy Wally Masur when the Aussie Open was played on grass at Kooyong. Boris' behaviour was appaling during this match (which he incidentally lost) and he totally intimidated the umpire. Little wonder he was booed so vociferously.
