For me it was Kournikova in Philadelphia in 2000. I asked her and she just ignored me and walked off. I was pretty harshed out.

Can someone please explain what is 'fun' about getting somebody's autograph?

Drake1980

I guess you either like doing it or don't. I really like it, it's like a personal memento of the player. It's fun and exciting for me.

This is hard for me, but Venus, twice. I am not giving up though, I will have her autograph! Also Henin, Sharapova, and Agassi.

Maria Sharapova wouldn't give my brother her autograph. This was when a few years ago before she became big. My brother walked by her for about 100 metres and she still wouldn't give it.

Vera Zvonereva doesn't sign after she wins a match. Some fans of her at the Aus Open were devastated when she didn't sign for them.

Lindsay Davenport walked right by me when I asked her for an autograph.

Sam Stosur wouldn't sign, she claimed she had a match so she couldn't but her match was 2 hours away.

All the small players sign nomatter what. Jill Craybas walked by and signed for my brother even though she lost. It really depends on the player. Really Maria and Lindsay have so many fans they prob don't care if they lose a fan. Vera really dosen't care bout her fans.

Lindsay Davenport walked right by me when I asked her for an autograph.

A couple of years ago at the Hopman Cup she was realli good signing autographs. She stood their for ages outside the tourney and after her match. Was this at a slam or a small tourney?

Ruano Pascual. But I was among several people, and some of us are going to get left out. Some players I wouldn't approach because I can tell by their body language that they are very pre-occupied and it is not a good time. Also, sometimes, it is better to use your proximity to take a photograph rather than try and get a signature. That happened with Justine--I opted for the photo.

I'm going back to Charleston this spring and will have photos I took of the players last year. Some of those I would like to have signed, especially Patty's. She signed a tennis ball for me as well as her win on the drawsheet.

I have really never been into autographs, but when the players are right there, it just seems like a natural thing to do.

Lindsay - 3 times!
Venus did once - when there was no one else around.
Maria did once - i'll try again this summer.

Credit to Serena - she signed for most of her fans.

At the US Open semis, we were watching players practice. Maria was there along with Kim, Hewitt, Agassi, etc. Obviously, fans watching them were also hoping to get their autographs after they practice. Agassi, upon exiting the practice courts, was very nice to sign a couple of those huge tennis balls. My brother got his autograph. Maria had just arrived when Agassi was signing so I thought she would at least do the same after her practice. But I was kinda dissapointed cause she didn't even look the fans' way as she was escorted out by her two huge bodyguards! I was annoyed but I somehow understand that if she had signed for one fan, she would have had to sign for as many as she could. Kim was very nice though and signed quickly for the fans. Because of this, I ended up saying Good Luck to her instead of to Maria whom I was there to support! haha! I knew then Maria was gonna lose! I so wanted to take what I said to Kim back...but it was too late!...

Australian Open, she just finished practising and was walking to the clubroom. No one else was around. I asked her for her autograph and she pretended not to hear me and walked off. I think it also depends on their mood. She prob thought if she stopped for me she has to stop for everyone else and she was prob a bit tired from her practise session.

right, so as I was saying - if she had just arrived while Agassi was signing: players don't usually sign at the start of their practice.

It is of course not nice...I actually wanted to boo her...haha...but it's not like I was the only one who approached her and was then ignored or like as someone experienced, rolled her eyes at me...now that is bitchy...so it could have been worse...but yeah I hope players would learn to appreciate their fans more and treat them with respect.

 You should have booed her! :haha: Just to see what she'd do! ;) (well she probably wouldn't care). ;) I must be lucky, coz I never had anyone turn me down for an autograph (but then I do like alot of lower ranked players, so I think they like that someone actually knows w(ho)tf they are). ;) ). But I don't really go autograph hunting anymore. I used to about 6-7 years ago. Hmm oh actually, Sandrine Testud was a bit "bitchy" like ignoring me after practice when I wanted her autograph. yeah she probably wouldn't have cared if I did boo her...and you are most likely right about the lower ranked players. I would assume most to be the most gracious and probably the most flattered that people find them important enough to ask for their autographs. Well, I don't really like getting autographs of famous people and taking pictures with them in general. I have too much pride! haha...so you can just imagine how irritated I was to have waited there and not get her autograph...It's indeed rare to see me with a pen in my hand waiting for someone...

and yeah - I very rarely ever ask for a pic with players. In fact, I don't think I ever asked for a pic with a player. I have been lucky a couple of times and a friend has happened to take a pic of me talking to a player, but never a "posed" one! ;)

Where do you stay in Charleston? I went this year and stayed at a Best Western because it had a great pool, and was a cheap rate. But it was a little bit out of the city. I might want to stay in the city this time (if I can go)! I need high speed internet too, so I can work at night.

Well.. I'm not surprised about this at PDG for JHH. It's not her turf, and as understandable as if Serena or Venus not doing autographs at Indian Wells.

Patty has said many times that the Belgian crowds were rough to her at
PDG, and blatantly cheering against her. :p

*I give ALL players the benefit of the doubt. Who knows what's in their heads at the moment? I've heard so many contradicting stories from various people on bigger named players.

I think we should all remember that some of it also has to do with how a person acts or handles the initial asking for an autograph to a player.. Some people never get refused because they are very polite, and make it easy for the player to do a simple autograph. Shoving, and yelling a players name isn't good either, or showing up after they lose or had a very difficult match. The safest time would be in the back courts after practice on a non-match day for a player. Grand Slams aren't particulary a good option too, actually. It's too hectic.

Surina de Beer (she's a South African that prolly no one knows) was really nice when I asked for an auto after AO quallies a few years ago. She was surprised that I was cheering for her and that I wanted her autograph (and also coz I was an Aussie, cheering for a South African). But then she got injured... :(

Sharapova three times, one of which shed just won Birmingham and wouldnt sign for ANYONE!

Lindsays signed both times id met her, both at Wimbledon. Lindsays a funny one, shes very tempremental and isnt so easy going at grand slams. Other tourneys she can be lovely. Thing is that I think with Lindsay, there are a lot of part time fans who jump on the bandwagon when shes playing well, theres a lot of unloyal fans who only want to know when shes playing well...
Lindsay ALWAYS stops for the people she KNOWS are real fans. And thats an observation from many davenport fans.

Clijsters has to be the best for giving autos, she was so lovely!!

Mauresmo and Kuznetsova just walked past everyone and so did Roddick. Venus didnt stop either.

Jelena Jankovic is another good one. Shes stopped both times for me, once walking though wimbledon grounds and I had a quick chat with her and the other just before the DFS classic final against Sharapova. Even after she lost she signed for people and smiled at me too!

Dani H has to be the most arrogent stuck up little cow ive ever seen. She is SO rude and always ignores everyone... Geez its not like shes the cream of the crop or anything!

The only thing that annoys me is that Mary Pierce walked past at wimbledon this year and I wasnt much of a fan then, so didnt stop her, now im a huge fan! Gutted....

When at wimbledon this year i saw a doubles match hantuchova/sugiyama vs myskina/miyagi. I am a big sugiyama and hantuchova fan but was new to following the wtatour and therefre did not know many players.

Myskina walked past and everybody wanted her autograph but i didn't know who she was at that time. Then Daniela walked past and i couldn't get her autograph.

When sugiyama walked past, everyone crowded around her because she was very popular here. I tried t get her autograph and nearly got it (my hand was just about touching her head) but then she signaled to the bodyguard that she wanted to leave and after lots of autographs, she walked off.

I chased after the direction that she went and couldn't see her. I reached the players entrance and as the door closed, i saw her.

I was so dissapointed. I thought, "there's always next year" but when i heard that she was thinking of retiring i new i had to get her autograph soon.

Next Wimbledon i'll try again. :)

i have visit 7 tournaments the last 4-5 years (she was there in 5 of them) and i never had any problems with her, always nice for giving a autograph or posing for a pic (and not only me). In Antwerp 2003 i got the chance to talk with her for like two minutes and she was very nice.

 :tape: Daniela is very arrogant. I've been lucky enough to get behind the scenes access in Sydney over the last 4-5 years and I never ever hardly seen Daniela take 5 minutes of her time to sign autographs, nor let people take photos of her.

After her practices sessions, she walks through 4-5 practices courts to avoid signing or meeting her fans. She does this every single year.

Ive gone to 3 events...

Signed every single time: Seles (2/2), Davenport (3/3)- once as she was walking on court to a doubles SF!), Raymond (3/3), Dementieva (3/3), Serena (1/1), Schnyder (4/4), Golovin (2/2)

Signed half the time : Henin-Hardenne (1/2), Venus (1/3)

Never signed: Capriati (0/1), Dokic (0/1)

how strange...I have 3 of her...she is soooooooooooooooo nice and I don't talk about the picture I took with her!
sorry for all the fan of venus but one time I was just walking in the street and a car was waiting for her so someone asked me to "move on the other side of the street" because she was arriving!!!!! I'm not surprised that she signed only one time
btw at least she signed!

Dani H has to be the most arrogent stuck up little cow ive ever seen. She is SO rude and always ignores everyone... Geez its not like shes the cream of the crop or anything!

When I asked Daniela for an autograph in Filderstadt after I saw her coming out from the presse-centrum she wanted ignore me but then she "came back" but she seemed so nerved by my question. And I was the only one there. But I already saw her before when some other fans were waiting for an autograph and she ignored them. I was really disappointed about her reaction.
But when I was in Linz a few weeks later she took the time to receive some gifts from fans and she was so lovely and cute. The absolutley opposite to Filderstadt. I was standing next to Daniela for more than 10 minutes. Unfortunatelty I was too shy to talk to her, so 3 other guys had a really funny and interessting conversation I listened to. They gave her two albums and Daniela told us some story to the pics. Hm, I couldnīt understand everything from their conversation coz they talked slovak and english (I never heart slovak before and my english is not the best :tape: ). Iīm not sure but I guess Nigel understand slovak, too coz he also was there and laughed when they spoke it.
However, this situation changed my opinion from Filderstadt and showed me that Daniela is really a very very lovely and cute person :hearts: :yeah:

i think the big players sign sometimes but they have to draw a line somewhere or else they would be autographing all day long

I remember watching something with Venus in it... and she said something about how she still thinks it's 'weird' when people ask for her autograph.
If someone could tell when she said this, it would be great. I just remember she did. I thought that was sweet in a way.

There are a some top-players from whom you easily get autographs and usually stay as along as possible to sign, plus they actually look like they are thankful for their fans(from my observations): Clijsters, Mauresmo, Myskina, Dementieva, Sugiyama, Pierce.

Category "Depends on the mood and time": Zvonareva, Henin-Hardenne, Williams

Sharapova...hmmm...actually never saw her sign anything but I guess itīs tough surrounded by 50 kids whereever you try to go.

wow daniela being accused so much of being a bitch! looks can really be deceiving huh? would never have thought...she seems like a nice shy girl...

That's really odd... because I got her autograph in 2003 when she was a top 10 player. Seems like she got less fan friendly as her ranking fell maybe?

And thats weird how Davenport wouldn't sign? Maybe she was just extra friendly being here in America... but not sure.

2 years ago at the Family Circle Cup I got Justine's autograph easily. When i was close up to her face though it looked   but anyways i had my autograph book right in front of mary pierce and she even had a pen in her hand but skipped over mine to autograph the person next to me. There was only probably like 10 people standing around so i thought that was very rude. Yeah, after practice sessions he'll just not sign at all if there are like about ten people. If there are a lot, he'll walk really quickly (I've even seen him run) and he will sign two or so on the way. After a match, I reckon it's the same though I never watch his matches :tape:

Hm, if I was a pro player on tour Iīd probably even sign autograph when I am in a bad mood. The athlets want that you support you but when someone ask for an autograph or a pic you run away? That sucks!

This year in Linz Daniela lost her quarters vs Schnyer 6-1 6-1 but she although gave an autograph-hour 20 minutes after that match. The organizer there said most of the players wouldnīt come after a so bad match. I was pleasantly surprised by Serena this year at the US Open in the 4th Round after she lost to Venus; she stayed around and signed most of the autographs while Venus only signed like 5. I think that it says a lot about a player if she is willing to sign after losing a match, the only other person who has done this for me is James Blake. He is the nicest guy around!

I just don't see the point in asking someone for an autograph.

So you want some evidence you met this famous person, took up their time and possibly annoyed them?

Nice thing to have around. :p

Sure, you can sell signed stuff for more but that's not the reason for a lot of it.

It seems to be something people do because it's something people have always done for decades.

It seems so intrusive to take up their time and ask for something personal. I'd never ask for an autograph. The most I'd do is smile or say "Hello" or something.

I find it impossible to get annoyed at any player not signing stuff as I don't see why they should be being asked in the first place.

to start with i like getting autographs cos it was my first 'hobby' i had as a kid...and its something i just do now for fun...i mainly collect via mail and have had some very cool replys in the post. all of my in person autographs i got at wimbledon....the main one i wanted was Lindsay...she signed before her practice session and was in a foul mood....did it bother me ....no, i got her auto and as a fan i know she is tempermental....and i love it lol! met her a couple more times that week and she was lovely...prob have her coach to thank though as he told her about the clan that were there and her friends took pics of my lindsay t shirt and banner.

other players that were nice were momo...i have never seen her refuse to sign even after her scheduled auto session she carried on signing. serena signed a few as well...but just as she was getting near my side she had to go...same with hewitt. peole bitch about him..but he is a gent. Hantucova..only saw her once, just b4 her auto session and people were asking her but she said 'i can only sign if you queue up'...didnt say it nastily...and she had a point.

maria...didnt see her personally...but from what i heard from this kids mum...she wasnt very fan friendly. best way to get marias is through the mail.
Mary pierce....just awsome!! same for kim...

the american junior..donald young...well there is a prime example of someone who thinks he has hit the big time.

Besides being an idea I like, there is something special about the look of it that really appeals to me.

Is it sewn, glued, or how is it made? What are the materials used? Do you hold it by the top or it has a pole, or you hang it up? What size is it?

Does your friend make them for fun, or she sells them, or what? How long does it take him/her to make one? About how much would it cost?

BTW, what does "hup" mean? something like "let's go"?

Besides being an idea I like, there is something special about the look of it that really appeals to me.

Is it sewn, glued, or how is it made? What are the materials used? Do you hold it by the top or it has a pole, or you hang it up? What size is it?

Does your friend make them for fun, or she sells them, or what? How long does it take him/her to make one? About how much would it cost?

BTW, what does "hup" mean? something like "let's go"?

The lettera are sewn on (with a sewing machine), and my friend glued on the sequins (kinda wish she hadn't but oh well). She just used "cloth" (material) and sequins. It's not on a pole, usually when we wanna hang them, we put some ribbon through a safety pin, and pin it to the top of the flag, and tie it onto a railing or so. (This is mostly at the basketball, coz we all have front row seats, but could also be done at the tennis if you have a railing nearby). I dunno what size it is... not that big... maybe like 1mx1m (approx), but she's made huge ones for the basketball.

Yeah, my friend basically makes them for fun. She likes to sew, and as I said, she usually just makes them for the basketball - I believe this was the first one she made for something different. She doesn't sell them, she just makes them for us to take - we hang them up at home games, and she actually does have poles for some of the basketball ones, and so we take them to away games too. It actually takes a fair while to make one (depending on the size of course). The way she does it is by tracing letter stencils than she has made, and then she sews the whole bit of material onto the "backing material" of the flag, and then she cuts out the "holes" in the letters, like in an o or an a...I have no idea how much it would cost. But I guess basically just the cost of the material, as she doesn't really count how much time it takes, coz she does it for fun.

Yeah, "hup" is Dutch for "come on".

I am a huge Daniela fan but i got to say, Dani isnt to big on the autograph's :p I do have her autograph tho :) Another one who rejected me was Lindsay freaking Davenport. She COMPLETELY skipped my and my sister and my little sister was so so sad.

Although, Kim Clijsters, she is the nicest girl on tour hands down, after her 4th round match at the US OPEN she stopped and signed everyones auto that wanted one in arthur ashe stadium :).......Dementieva is really good about it too, smiles and really kindhearted :) Myskina signed most everyones and was nice. Sugiyama was funny, i had a pic of daniela for dani to sign after one of their dubs and they went back to sign after they won, dani signed a few and walked off and i still had my pic of dani hangin out and pretty much without me knowing Ai signed it then when she noticed that Dani was on the pic she was like "omg i am so sorry!" and i was like dont worry about it.i also got chakvetadze's shes cute and really seems so young, shes nice. I also got one from Sania Mirza, she is hot in person (i just wish she would take out her freakin nose ring)...oh and i got Patty Schnyders too, shes funny. And some i have from a long long time ago include Jelena Dokic, Serena and Venus, Hingis, and Rubin :)

I did get daniela hantuchova's autograph. I used some sad little fat asian girl to get one though. Daniela seemed pretty occupied but there was this little asain girl that didnt have a pen but needed an autograph on a tennisball. I said i would help her, pushed her in front of daniela, gave her a soft small pen that obviously wouldn't sign on a tennisball, daniela tried, it didnt work then i gave her a piece of paper and she did sign it for me but the sad little girl didnt get anything!

Well we can't expect players to sign each an every autograph, especially the top players. They'd be there all day trying to please everyone.

Probably youre right. I remember in the US Open this year. When Andre Agassi was practising there were more than 1000 people every day watching him. Itīs impossible to give an autograph to everybody.

I've only ever got one autograph, and that was Sharapova's at Birmingham in 2004. For those that know the site I was sat on the little hill that overlooks the practice courts when she came and sat down right behind me (prior to doing lots of stretches with her fitness trainer), so it was too good a chance to miss. She was very nice about it, though obviously she didn't get the hassle then she does now...

I stopped asking for players' autographs when I was a teenager but I still regularly ask them if I can take their photo; these photos trigger memories of seeing these players at different tournaments and what they accomplished in that particular year. I definitely agree that the lower ranked players are far more personable. This is inevitable I suppose as they are still relatively unspoiled by success and don't yet have the pressure the top players have to face. Certain players have been charm itself such as Iroda Tulyagonova,Mara Santangelo, Marta Domachowska, Sesil Karatantcheva and Gisela Dulko. Of the top players, I found Kim and Mary to be very gracious.
In my experience, the nicest of all have been Eleni Daniilidou, Aniko Kapros and the wonderful Czechs Sandra Kleinova and Kveta Peschke.
I saw Nicole Vaidisova being very cold to a couple of fans after her practice match the day before the US Open started. Also, a few years ago I saw Lina Krasnoroutskaya rush past several fans after a practice match but this was clearly down to the fact that her coach Larissa Neiland screamed at her throughout her practice session and for a few minutes afterwards. She looked totally humiliated.

A few friends of mine have told me that Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was very rude to them when they asked her to sign (on separate occasions).

In my case, the rudest player I have ever spoken to when asking for a photo is on the men's tour. It was after a practice match at Roland Garros a couple of years ago two days before the French Open started. The player in question is Mariano Puerta. He was BRUTAL!!! He only enjoys signing for pretty females.

LOL. Serena is the greatest, I dont know why she gets such a bad rep. Maybe because she is so talented, people dislike her....

to start with i like getting autographs cos it was my first 'hobby' i had as a kid...and its something i just do now for fun...i mainly collect via mail and have had some very cool replys in the post. all of my in person autographs i got at wimbledon....the main one i wanted was Lindsay...she signed before her practice session and was in a foul mood....did it bother me ....no, i got her auto and as a fan i know she is tempermental....and i love it lol! met her a couple more times that week and she was lovely...prob have her coach to thank though as he told her about the clan that were there and her friends took pics of my lindsay t shirt and banner.

other players that were nice were momo...i have never seen her refuse to sign even after her scheduled auto session she carried on signing. serena signed a few as well...but just as she was getting near my side she had to go...same with hewitt. peole bitch about him..but he is a gent.

What did Donald do?

And Lleyton, in my opinion, is an absolute prick. I would never call him a gentleman ;)

Martina Navratilova, now she is bad :o She is so rude to fans and press, thinks she is all that. But it's funny to hear her rant.

In Rosmalen, she was so rude to this deaf girl. Queen Navratilova was not pleased with the way she was handed the pen (at first she even refused to sign) and asked her "How do you hand someone a pen?". Obviously, the deaf girl did not hear it and did not respond and Martina was so bitchy.

I had a lot trouble getting my all-time fave Julie Halard's autograph...

It was at the old Brighton Tournie...Id got up in the early hours, took a train halfway across the country, just in the hope of getting to see her play, and fingers crossed get an autograph too.

I entered the arena, and was surprised and delighted to see Julie practising right there on court (she wasn't due to play that afternoon at all...I asked a security guard if it would be Ok to ask her for an autograph when she finished, he said it was fine...but then sour faced Brit tennis legend Ann Jones came up to him and told him no I couldn't...the now surly and aggressive security guy then guided me away from courtside, saying I couldn't ask for one. I was gutted!

A few minutes later, I was walking downheartedly though the arena, when who walked straight past me but Julie!! I couldn't find my pen though and by the time I did, she'd gone.

I asked a couple of old but nice security guards if it was okay to wait outside the players entrance for a chance of an autograph, they said no problem...

Some fans there told me Julie was very very shy, and getting her autogrpah might be difficult.

A few minutes later I spot her coming my way...I get my pen ready, my programme...this was it!!! I was about to say a word or two to my absolute sporting heroine, I worshiped the water she walked on it was gonna be a dream come true!

Well maybe not...

I stuttered out politely whether she could sign my programme, she nodded and took my pen...YES! The pen ran over the cover of the programme but...IT WOULDN'T BLOODY WORK!!!    She tried it a few times...nothing, not one bloomin bit of ink!!!! I couldn't believe it. Arnaud, her husband/coach asked if there was a problem...I mumbeled something about the pen...kindly he took the pen, and dismanttled it, trying to get it to work, blowing in it...NO LUCK.

He said they could come back very soon, when I would get another chance...

I rushed round the block, bought a handful of pens...and hurried back...theyd been and gone again!!!

I decided I wouldn't move from there til I got that autogprah! Maybe an hour later I saw them approach once more, then meekly asked for her autogprahand finally got it! Phew, what a relief!

Some years later I manged to get her autograph much more easily after she won the Birminham tournie, I mumbled "congratulations!" and she sweetly said thank you. :):hearts:

at the us open this year after i got nastya to sign, she tells me "you look like a great guy, lets get married!" (ok so it didn't go quite like that  )

all kidding aside the top 3 from the women ide say were:
1) mary pierce - you had to be there to see how gracious and friendly she was signing, pictures, everything, and all with a great smile saving the biggest smiles for the kids, it was easy to see why she is so popular
2) maria kirilenko - she was there after practice with her bag on her shoulders signing for the mob of fans all sweaty and tired, i dont think she turned anyone down, and would have been justified in just going back
3)jelena jankovic - after her first round match, and after she had taken a medical timeout for the back that would force her retirement against pierce, she was 100% beat but still took time to sign even though she had every right to have left, she even said "im tired, i got to go guys" but still stayed around longer than she should have to sign...very classy on her part

I suspect that Sharapova and Hantuchova get a lot of "attention" from "fans" of a nature that make them feel inclined to keep some distance between themselves and fans. I'm sure all players get some mail, etc. from a few screw-balls, but can you imagine the volume and depravity of some of the stuff those two receive? I don't blame them for walking away as fast as they can from people they don't know.

I've seen Jennifer and Venus blow past kids begging for autographs without a second thought, but I didn't think it was appropriate to be asking them in those situations for autographs. Venus had just finished a practice right before a tournament final and was walking back to the lockers to change, Jennifer had just lost a close match and appeared visibly upset. I've been told, those aren't the times to ask. And they weren't for Venus and Jennifer!

I had a photo with Martina.N, Gigi fernandez and Conchita Martinez in eastbourne over 10 years ago, they were all very charming, conchita even made polite conversation.
At the same tourney, Pam shriver was there, she turned me down flat along with other people, she was very rude indeed. She couls have been having a bad day as all players must. It can't be possible to sign all the time, but there is no need to be rude when saying no. I saw Martina.N say a couple of times over the years to different fans 'do you mind asking me later' she said it with a smile. Saying that I've seen her snarl at people as well. although I still follow tennis closely, I haven't been to a tourney in years so can comment on players in the top 50 now.

i have visit 7 tournaments the last 4-5 years (she was there in 5 of them) and i never had any problems with her, always nice for giving a autograph or posing for a pic (and not only me). In Antwerp 2003 i got the chance to talk with her for like two minutes and she was very nice.

Some people here just don't understand that they can't make time every second someone ask for a pic or autograph.

Im sure every player already rejected a autograph .

It's not because two idiots like lefandepatty and lindsayno1 say daniela is a bitch , she really is.;)

Woah, you never told me. Just that you said "Congrtas" to her after a match and she said " Thank you". You knos Iīm jealous of everyone who has ever talked to her, so what are you talking about?
