Nowadays there is a huge focus on players at the top of the rankings, with sharapova, davenport and many others in the limelight.

I don't understand why Elena Likhovtseva is never talked about. Is she not liked? Did she do something to offend people?

She is ranked pretty high to not get ANY attention. Not only is she a good singles player and has been for many years, she is one of the worlds best doubles players at the moment.

What do the rest of you WTAtour fans think?

Do you like her?

I think she's Ok. She needs more big wins to be talked about more i would say.

I like her alot.
she belongs to my very first few faves - Smashnova, Panova, Tulyaganova and Likhovtseva all are very dear to me. I followed them since i got into tennis.
She's solid, She's athletic, she's fit and strong, she can hit all the shots, she's consistent (10 years in the top50) and she's adorable.
what's there to dislike?
she's a bit off on clay, which comes as a suprise to most newer fans of her, considering her RG success, but she's very effective on the other surfaces.

The chances of a breakthrough ASB Classic tournament win for the Russians became even stronger yesterday with news that world No 17 Elena Likhovtseva will return to Auckland for January event.

The Russians already held a strong hand with ASB Classic top seed, world No 9 Nadia Petrova, Maria Kirilenko, Vera Dushevina and Vera Zvonareva - all in the world's top 42 - signed up.

But Likhovtseva's last-minute entry has boosted the list further, with the 30-year-old from Moscow taking second seeding and pushing Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova (ranked 19th) back to third.

"Elena's entry came out of the blue," said tournament director Richard Palmer.

"We are delighted she is coming back as she has been one of the most popular players to come here."

She is a very nice person, funny and a good photographer. Her game is not that spectacular but if she´s on, she hits great shots. Love watching her play doubles.

She belongs to my "I really like them"-category;)

oh - why she's not as populer is a very good question.
popularity usually has alot to do with your start.
looks, grace, a fast big win and title. winning a slam has alot to do with popularity.
bieng the best in your country works. having a unique game sometimes works.

Likhovtseva is a great player - but she's a bit old school.
She's a complete athlete - not a stunner. she doesn't have a brutul shot, nor any other specialities, often known as "weapons". she's not conventionally pretty (though she's so cute IMO) nor is she good with the media (AKA giggle, smile, wave "you know") she didn't have a fantastic start to her career, and she wasn't a reguler at the second week in grand slams.

The media likes a good story.
it doesn't have to do with tennis, or even sports.
Dokic is still more populer than likhovtseva.
popularity is a very tricky part of our lives. no one knows how it works completly.
all i can say is that i really like her, i think she's so cute, and i hope she has a great 2006.

Thanks for the information. I understand popularity much more and what you say seems really logical actually.

I'm a big fan too. LOL

Saw Elena play doubles in person, and she was awesome. Really a confident, all-court game... btw does anyone else think she looks a lot like Alla who just got fired on the "Apprentice" show???

Yeah, but unfortunately she's a bit of a choker and loser.

She’s either not attractive enough. Doesn’t contend enough major finals. Or both.

I think that she often has one "big" result each year :

2005 : Roland Garros Semi Final (losing to Mary Pierce)
2004 : Candadian Open Final (losing to Mauresmo);
did win Forest Hills (but only one two matches to win the title!!)
2003 : Doha Final (losing to Myskina)
2002 : Wimbledon QF (losing to Venus)
2001 : Eastbourne SF (losing to Serna)
2000 : Australian Open QF (losing to Martinez)

She has won two other singles titles and 24 doubles.

She's not young, she's not pretty enough, she rarely beats decent or top players. Few care about doubles. She doesn't have a prayer to win a major in singles. I think many view her singles results the last year or so as a fluke, rightly or wrongly. Dechy gets little to no attention either, for the same reaons. Ditto for Suarez two years ago. All nice enough girls, but they just don't have the right combination to get star attention.

I agree that she does not have much things that bring popularity but i think popularity should be about tennis not other things like success or age.

Elena is another example of a true tennis professional, the game would be lost without players like her. I got her autograph at the USOpen and I think she almost died I knew who she was!!lol

I like her game, it reminds me of Ai's, and both are brilliant doubles players who don't come into the net enough in singles

a very good point from you.i am a big leni-fan too,and somehow, she does not get the attention she deserves.i dont know, why, maybe one reason is,that many tennis fans here are pretty young, and therefore are more interested in the glitter and glamour division.but thats no problem for me, i know, how good she is!think for example on 1)the great win over sesil karatantcheva at RG,and sesil is 15 years younger!!but the age does not play that big a role for me anyway, its about quality, folks!and the 2)which i sadly could not see,the incredible fight vs mary pierce in Moscow, where they played over three ours, and elena already led 6-1 or so in the tie-break!!ok,she lost, but in the context of marys efforts over the year, that was a phantastic effort of elena!! :worship: so,you are very right to support her,and i assure you,we will still have much pleasure with her next year!! :bounce: :bounce:  leni-baby!!

I'm an Elena fan. I was thrilled at the great year she put together this season, at this late stage of her career. :hearts:

But Elena has never made any effort to attract attention to herself; she keeps a low profile and seems to like it that way. And I like that about her! Also, she's been married for years, so she's never going to get the attention of the mostly-male media. ;)

Someone should start a website about her because she's got to be one of the only top players without a good one!

Russia is huge now, but there was a time when she was the only top Sovietic player (along with Zvereva, a missed presence on tour  )
I like her, I think her tennis is one of the most elegants nowadays :worship: She just lacks a one handed backhand :p J/K

Anna said Elena was like an older sister??? Oh, please. At the U.S. Open, they were playing doubles together, and when Elena went over to tell Anna something, Anna just shook her head and wouldn't even look at her.

She was one of the first eastern Eurpeans that I cheered for.
She has a very very good game.
Now in her twilight of her career she has done amazingly well.
I think I saw her in a supermarket shopping next to the San Diego tournament this year.
She allways struck me as a very pleasent lady, well liked by her fellow competitors.

Elena L. is one of the girls of Dominique Van Roost-Monami's generation so I know her quite well as a player. Also, Kim won the Leipzig tournament against her so that's another reason why Elena L. is one of the girls who stand out for me.
Yes, she's a bit old school but that's what I like about her.
She's one of the girls that make the tour what it is. She will never win a Slam but she just does thing, gives what she has and enjoys it.

It is true that she is one of the girls who is always around and the stats confirm that.
