View Full Version : Peng plays like Hingis :)

Both of them are cute, great movers and skilful players.

But Peng has a bigger serve and younger than Hingis so that probably Peng will achieve more in her Tennis career in comparing with Hingis

I hope both of them can be in top 10 together  :smooch:

Hingis has a better court sense, more variety, better drop shots, better volleys, a better anticipation and a better backhand:p and she's HOT:drool:

What is it about Peng's game that makes you think she'll do better? She's only the tenth highest ranked teenager!

If you feel that way, itīs nice but donīt you think that your assumption (or letīs say belief) isnīt a bit misguided? Without wanting to discuss the question whether Peng is as good as Hingis (I wonīt comment on this one), they really donīt have a similar game.

I was a huge fan of Hingisī game in the past and even as a Nastya fan I still have to smile and shake my head (proudly) when journalists say that the Russianīs probably the closest you can get compared to Martina. Anyway, you have a healthly self-confidence;)

It's nice to be optimistic, not delusional.

Peng has the potential to achieve great results, but she hasn't even won a title yet, let a lone a GS, which Hingis has 14 of.

Peng has an interesting game and is capable of pulling off an occasional upset of a top ten or even a top five player. Is she capable of winning Grand Slam singles titles...the answer is no. I saw most of her first round match against Finland's Emma Laine at the US Open and to see her fold after being in such a strong position left me wondering whether she is capable of making the top twenty, let alone matching Matina Hingis' accomplishments. Peng can be a handfull for even the best players when she is at her best but Peng cannot be quoted in the same breath as Hingis.

She's a fairly young (19, turns 20 in a month apparently) Chinese tennis player who has upset a couple top 10 players. She has a relatively conventional power game, but uses a two handed forehand (which is possibly the ugliest shot in tennis, not just her's, but anyone's) and has a decent serve, but nothing special. She's been tipped by a couple fans to be a top 5 player and win a grand slam title next year, but most pundits (i.e. anyone with common sense) isn't blind enough to think she can wade through Clijsters, Davenport, Pierce, Mauresmo, Henin, either Williams, Sharapova...she beat Clijsters once, which some people took for a sign of her domination in years to come. Similar to a surge in Tian Tian Sun fans after she beat Serena, IMO.

The main thing is she's very different from the other Chinese players, most of whom are retrievers without a whole lot of ideas about offense and hitting winners. Apparently she's good looking...welcome to tennis, we have hot players, it's nothing new ;) ... She plays virtually nothing like Hingis, her dropshots are jokes, her angles and spin virtually nonexistant, and she's five years older than when Hingis was making waves. Plus, Hingis' waves were a lot bigger, if you ask any of her opponents in '96.

::modified:: SOME OF her fans on this board are pretty obnoxious, and started a lot of threads about her, because ever since the talk of Hingis rejoining the tour, nobody has talked about the up-and-comers.

Peng does have great angles on her shots, but her volleys are bad. She is more like Seles than Hingis.
And you are also wrong about the Chinese players, most of them play offensively and hit a lot of winners. But Peng is the only top Chinese who plays double handed off both sides, so she is different in that way.

Some of her fans are annoying, but thats no reason to not support this sweet talented young player.

Her angles are very inconsistent. She plays a fantastic match, and then she can't get a forehand crosscourt. She can't slice a ball without revealing precisely what she's doing. It's very much like Seles, without the mental fortitude or consistency she exhibited pre-Stabbing. Have you seen Zheng play? Or Tian Tian Sun? I've never seen so much moonballing, scrambling, and retrieving. It's a smart tactic against a winner-error player. It's not disparaging at all.

I support her fully, I just haven't bought into the hype. Until she can prove to me that she can succeed in winning consecutive big matches, I don't understand why anyone would tip her for #1. She's got the potential to move up to the top 10 in a few years, but she's just a 2nd rate up-and-comer right now, and having obnoxious fans won't win her any support anywhere. I'd be pleased if she proves me wrong, develops her game, and goes on to accomplish a lot in tennis. I'm just not convinced yet, and don't appreciate ridiculous fans (penglover) trying to make her out as something she isn't. It isn't good for her to be hyped and then not meet those expectations. It's far better to exceed a middle expectation than to fail a high expectation.

inconsistent to have beaten elena, kim and other top 20 players

Look up the words you are going to criticize next time. Inconsistency comes in different forms. Some players hit winner, error, winner, error. Others hit a set of winners, a set of errors, and so on. Others wake up and play amazingly, go to bed, and then wake up and can barely keep a ball in the court. Peng goes from great win (e.g. Kim) to getting squashed (e.g. Pierce the next day). It's not a new thing, either. At Sydney, she beat Myskina in stunning fashion, but then she looked completely out of her league against Venus at the Aussie. That's inconsistency. She doesn't compete consistently against the top 20 players. The only consecutive victories against top 20 that I can think of are Myskina and then Petrova, but Petrova withdrew, so how is that a fair indicator?

Towards the end of the year, she seemed to be improving (3 top 25 players in a tournament), but then she loses to players like Azarenka, Laine, Dushevina...it's hard to tout someone who can kill a giant one day, and lose to a mouse the next, as the next great thing. When players like Hingis (the comparison YOU made on this thread) were making a splash, they went on runs of incredible wins, and then some calm periods, and then hot again, and cool, and gradually became forces on the tour. Peng hasn't done that yet. Players like Hingis did, and at a younger age. So how do you justify the position that Peng plays like Hingis? And no, 'PENG ::hearts:: is my pretty princess' does not constitute an answer.

I've seen matches where Peng has hit great angles consistently.

As for Zheng and Sun, I've seen most of their matches at the AO every year since 2002 and I can assure you that Sun is not a moonballer or a retriever. She has a big serve and forehand and hits flat and aggressively. I'd be interested to know in which match you saw her moonball.
Zheng is a retriever/counterpuncher, but not a moonballer. She hits the ball pretty flat. Anyway I agree that she is a retriever, which is why I said 'most' of them are not. Zi Yan, Na Li, and Nan Nan Liu are not retrievers either.

The student has overtaken the master.

This was a great thread to read through. It re-confirmed my belief that Peng has been a total waste of talent and will continue to be. This thread is about two and a half years old, and since her great 2005 Peng has done absolutely nothing outside of Beijing where she beat Hingis and Mauresmo when both were in decline (she was actually the last player to ever defeat Martina Hingis).

A big :yeah: to those of you who picked her to be nothing special. You were right on the money.

Yeah, girls should stick together.

Only problem with that is... much as I like women,
Saying all women are the same, is like saying all women keep their word,
and all mothers love their children.
